How to fix P0172 Code: Fuel System Too Rich (Bank 1)
A Rich condition exists if the engine is getting more gas than air into the cylinders. (Air/Fuel Ratio is off.
(How a P0172 Code is triggered.) The oxygen sensor is reading the amount of oxygen burnt off during combustion and is reporting the information to the computer. The sensor is reading there is more oxygen than should be on Bank-1 side of the engine.
P0172 Code can be problematic to fix since it can be caused by several things.
Possible Causes of a P0172 Code:
Oxygen Sensor (Bank 1 Sensor 1)
Bad Fuel Injector
Vacuum Leak
Other Possible Causes but Usually Would also Cause Bank-2 Issues (P0175 Code: Engine Too Rich Bank 2)
Bad Mass Air Flow Sensor or Other Sensor
Blocked Air Intake
Bad Fuel Pressure Regulator or Fuel Pump

I have a 2007 chrysler town and country touring van. Got it for $1700 clean ride. Needs tune up. This guy is very thorough and easy to follow along. I took notes. 👍 will follow up.

Out of all and any videos I’ve ever seen on auto repair, this is by far the most in depth, fully covered and explicitly explained. I thank you so much! Good luck to you!

Great help. I had purchased new Injectors from amazon and found 2 of them were defective!

I pulled the spark plugs and found one wet with fuel. I hooked up a compression gage and disconnected the fuel injector wire from the suspect fault. The Compression check was good but on release of pressure It sprayed fuel vaper out even with wire disconnected. What that meant to me was the fuel was never shutting off on that injector. Replaced the injector fixed the problem.

I have Ford Escape XLT 2006 2.3L , it starts then dies , cannot hold rpms on idle, but continues running if gas pedal pressed; What if there are no any error codes, and I checked injectors and sparks: they are good; throttle body is clean, air filter OK too, no vacuum leaks; And that could be faulty fuel pressure sensor but that sensor does not exist in place where it supposed to be in that car, not found it anywhere else in car but how that can be possible and what else to look ?

I have a P0 172 in a 2007 Toyota Prius. I’ve changed the spark plugs and I have changed the fuel injectors and I still get somewhere around -32 on my long-term fuel trims. So I’m leaning towards the bank one airflow sensor as the culprit… But what I just don’t get is if that sensor is bad, why doesn’t it show up as a bad sensor code, instead of the P0172 code? I don’t understand that. Can you explain this?

I got the 'Bank 1 Too Rich' error at a smog station, then went to Auto Zone and their machine suggested I replace the Mass Air Flow Sensor, which I did, but it didn't fix the problem.

Were you able to fix the problem ?
@Discovery_and_Change
@Discovery_and_Change Месяц назад
@@leomesssi209 No. The Mass Air Flow sensor didn't fix it, and I decided to put the car on non-operation and wait until next year to fix it. The smog guy said he would check the fuel pressure next to see if that was the problem, but he was going to charge me again (after I had already paid for the smog and other minor things he tried on the vehicle), so I decided to wait until next year. Anyway, oxygen sensors, fuel pressure, fuel injector, fuel pump, fuel filter, hoses, and mass air flow sensor seem to be the things to check.

@@Discovery_and_ChangeThe Lambda sensor bro. O2 sensors. 🫡 change them both at same time, b4 replace remove battery for no check engine light tho after replacement.

It's probably just the o2 sensor.. if that's the only code you got. Don't let the car sit though more issues could pop up

@@mycrapychannel99 thank you I ended up putting the car on non-operation, but the oxygen sensor sounds worth a try Thanks again

I have a toyota camry 2010, the first code displayed was p0128 which is for thermostat, then few days after it displayed the p0172... Could a bad thermostat prompt the p0172 code?
@garryV373
@garryV373 14 дней назад
I would say no. 172 is a error caused by fuel too rich . O2 sensor in exhaust system sends that to ECM.

I started having issues with my 21 gladiator. Throwing codes for both banks saying that both were running too rich. I changed the oil, spark plugs, injectors, pcv valve, and the coil packs. After all not that it ran great for about 10 minutes then went right back to the same issue. The injectors I installed had the correct part number however, the O-rings were too small and the injectors did not seat properly. So I removed the O-Rings from the old injectors and installed them on the new injectors. That allowed them to seat properly but I'm wondering if the aftermarket injectors are faulty. I replaced the originals with Bosch brand injectors because Bosch always had a good reputation. I haven't replaced my mass air flow sensor yet but am planning to do that next. I also thought about replacing the factory evap purge valves too. Any other ideas?

If both banks are running rich, there is likely something affecting the whole engine, such as a bad sensor, high fuel pressure, stuck open purge valve, or something along those lines.

I did a muffler delete. Would that cause it?

I have intermittent P0172 and P0441 which pops up together. The car is sluggish most of the time. Engine oil smells of fuel.

I would test the purge valve it may be stuck open.

I had a misfire check engine reporting on and off for 2 years with '14 GM Sierra 1500 5.3L. Decided to tackle it. Changed plugs, plug wires, ignition coils and all injectors (100k miles), why not. Now I'm sitting with a p219A (bank 1 air-fuel ratio imbalance and p0175 (system too rich bank 2). I've also replaced PCV Valve, Purge Cannister, and MAP Sensor. I can't win for losing. Both banks for long-term fuel trims sitting -30%. I'm feeling bad high fuel pressure pump since the regulator is built into it. Next up I'm smoking the evap system. Any ideas?

Did you replace the Oxygen Sensor? The Bank 1 Upstream 02 sensor is what reports the Air/Fuel Mixture to the ECU. Else, you might have a leaky injector; yes, even a new one, on a specific cylinder. For example, p0302 would mean misfire on Cylinder 2 for my vehicle. Look for additional codes that have a consistent pattern to narrow down the issue. Good luck my friend. I feel your pain, as I have been there before. You will figure it out.

@@supercoffeebean I replaced the O2 for B1S2, still throwing the p219a. I broke down and did what I do not like doing and took it in to shop for advanced diagnostics. They came back with the issue being the aftermarket CAI (K&N Non-Oiled Filter). They disconnected the intake, plugged everything all readings went back to normal; recommended going back to stock. What's odd is I bought the truck back in 2019 used with that CAI already on it. I'm guessing after all the replacement parts I installed, it officially made her angry. I didn't go OE with plugs (MSD), wires (MSD) and ignition coils (MSD), but everything else I replaced was OE. I have a suspicion, but really no clue, the truck was tuned to accept the aftermarket CAI. When I replaced things, it interrupted that tune. Going to hit up a tune shop and see what they have to offer with insights and if they can retune it for less than replacing the CAI back to stock parts. Just glad I have it down to one of two things that need to happen now. I am no mechanic by any means and would have never thought to look at the CAI as the overarching issue since I didn't do anything to it. It's been enlightening. 🤣
