How to fix a P2097 engine code: Post Catalyst Fuel Trim System Too Rich Bank 1
A P2097 code is set when the downstream Bank 1 oxygen sensor reads a rich condition.
A Rich condition is when the air/fuel ratio is off, with more gas than necessary going into the engine.
The downstream oxygen sensor is monitoring the health of the catalytic converter.
Possible Causes of a P2097 Code:
Exhaust leak
Catalytic converter
Faulty oxygen sensor
Oxygen Sensor Wiring
Faulty Fuel Injector (Will Usually Get Other Codes)
Faulty Coil (Will Usually Get Other Codes)
The information in this video is based on the OBDII protocol definitions, manuals, and my own experience. Always pay attention to any other DTC codes as they may point to a different cause. If you have fixed this code and have information not provided let us know in the comments.

As a 30-year amateur auto mechanic, I've watched hundreds of car repair videos. This was one of the most to-the-point, clear and complete ones I've seen. Explained pretty much the whole problem and multiple solutions in under 4 minutes. Great video, thanks.

Good job dude! This is how all videos should be. Quick, to the point, and done. Sometimes I swear I want to throw the phone and smash it against the wall when I see these 15 or 20 minute videos with only 2 minutes of useful information in it.

I replaced my 02 sensor with an Oem one brand new. I don’t have a exhaust gasket “ I put my exhaust on in a rush lol “ , I’ll definitely check that out and replace

Hey I'm getting p2097 code in 2017 altima 2.5. I had both upstream and downstream replaced but kept getting several codes. When I went to change spark plugs, I found the upstream wiring connection loose and unable to stay fully clipped in. I rigged it to stay together and plan to fix it asap. All other codes went away after that except p2097.

I just got this code in my malibu and im kinda new to this maintenance thing. The paper printout from the obd says i should reprogram the pcm, should i just try changing the o2 and clearing the code then seeing if it works or should i just go straight into getting to computer reprogramed

Changed both o2s and the cat is new., plugs look fine.. No exhaust leaks to note.. got rid of most codes.. but now p2097 hmm Help!..ok so check out this UPDATE: I cleared the code and drove the car home about 20 miles..the code never came back.. so is it possible that there was still some residual gas in the cat and the new O2 had picked some of that up.. I started the car with the new O2 installed BUT not plugged into the harness cuz I was checking for a Volt reading on my meter.. between .1-1V. then once I got a .1-.2v reading I knew the sensor was working.. I also checked the heater for continuity.. it was ringing loud n clear..so I know the new o2 was working at time of install... the only other thing I can think is that the cat is a cheap universal fitment china type and is not working up to oem spec.. leaving unburned fuel pass through to the downstream O2 to read "too rich" p2097... does this make any sense?. also I thought it could be a sticky injector or bad plug but I checked the plugs, they look mint.. and a bad injector would have given me more codes including misfire.. which I haven't gotten.. yet..help a brotha out, thanks Sir

Hopefully, the code does not come back; otherwise since the 02 sensors are good, there is likely a rich condition that can be hard to troubleshoot.

@@HVAC_Mechanic in a nutshell what could be some causes of a Rich condition?. bad injector/s?, bad plug, bad coil pack,.. vacuum leak, exhaust leak, ?
@HVAC_Mechanic
@HVAC_Mechanic 2 месяца назад
A Rich condition can be hard to troubleshoot since so many things can cause it. Basically, the air/fuel ratio is off more gas than air going into the cylinders. Common causes are bad injectors, high fuel pressure, stuck open purge valve, and more. If it does have a Rich condition, I would remove the spark plugs on Bank 1, match them to a spark plug burn chart, and see if a cylinder is running Rich.

Brotha, I have a 2016 Silverado. I had a P2097 code. Already replaced o2 sensors. Truck at a idle will start to studder and eventually turn off. No other code comes up. What else could I check? And advise would help.
