I am always pleased with the Bob Steele westerns. I know a lot of movie fans poke fun at Steele for wearing lip stick but in my book he is still a badass. lol

Funny how Hollywood's perception of slavery has changed since 1936?

I would love to know who composed the music at the beginning of the film. That is a terrific piece of 19th century style music.

Interesting, Lincoln promotes Steele in rank after Lincoln was already dead. Who wrote this?

At 1:01:20 Betty lee calls Captain Thorne "Ted". In another part of the movie someone calls him "BoB'. is it Bob or Ted? They get the script jumbled up. lol Great Movie, anyway!

The sound quality wasn't very good then. Was she saying "Thorne?"

(Despite everything below, I did enjoy this movie.) Republic Pictures made above-average B-movies, but Hollywood sure didn't have to worry too much about historical accuracy or plot logic back then: 1) The former slaves wept for the departure of their former owners. Also, why did the white owners of the plantation go west, leaving the ruined plantation to the former slaves? 2) At 9:00, the three bad guys make an impulsive decision to go west, with no provisions. They then wade across what is implied to be the boundary between east and west. Is it supposed to be the Mississippi River? 3) The first transcontinental telegraph was completed in 1861, not after the Civil War. It ran from Omaha, Nebraska to Carson City, Nevada, not "Sageville." Keeping its western terminus a mystery during construction would have made no sense; Congress would likely have refused to fund it. 4) The surveyors are laying out the route for the telegraph one day ahead of the construction crew. 5) At 23:54, it's remarkable how well defined the clouds and shadows are at night! 6) At 26:23, there was stock footage of actual Native Americans, which makes the white actors playing Natives look even more ridiculous. 7) At 34:57, a secessionist character says, "We've been fairly successful so far in getting rid of our enemies," shortly after losing the Civil War. 8) At 36:00, the leading lady says they were attacked by Indians during their trip across the Plains. Those Plains sure do have a lot of mountains! 9) At 37:18, Bob Steele's character is called a "Yankee spy." He's a Union/American Army officer on American territory, and his identity is now public knowledge. 10) At 38:47, after discussing the "Yankee spy," they leave the stolen or smuggled cargo of rifles in an unguarded wagon that is not hidden, saying "It will be safe here, till we want it." 11) At 46:30, the lead secessionist says, "We will be safe in an empire of our own." The million-man Union Army had just defeated the 11 states of the Confederacy, but the town of Sageville will be able to win. 12) At 56:30, the lead secessionist says the Indians will attack. Apparently, he just assumed it would happen. Because he said so? Brilliant screenwriting.
