Meet the cave lion Panthera leo spelaea - - an extinct subspecies of lions that inhabited Europe and Siberia during the Pleistocene epoch. Yes, there were lions in Russia, too.
In General, there are several subspecies of Pleistocene lions:
Panthera leo atrox - American cave lion. It was distributed in North America from Canada to Peru during the Pleistocene epoch. It became extinct 10,000 years ago. Sometimes the American lion and the cave lion are considered separate species, but recent phylogenetic studies show that both forms are subspecies of the lion. It was one of the largest subspecies of the lion - the body length was 1.6-2.5 m, and the probable body weight was up to 250-300 kg. The presence of a mane is doubtful.
Panthera leo fossilis-known as the Mosbach lion. It lived 500,000 years ago, and fossils of this animal have been found in Germany and Italy. It was similar in size to the American lion.
And our guest today (Panthera leo spelaea) is known as the cave lion, European cave lion, and Eurasian cave lion. It was distributed in Eurasia 300,000-10,000 years ago. This subspecies is known for the rock paintings of the Paleolithic age, images in ivory and clay figurines. Preserved images allow us to establish that the cave lion had protruding ears, a tail with a brush, and possibly small "tiger" stripes. Males had a weakly defined mane around the neck. Or maybe it evolved into the Amur tiger? Joke.
