What do you think? Was the Avanti Sigma IV antenna overrated? I found this article after I posted this video, it's a good article to read: cb-antennas.com/wp-content/up...
@@Z28videogates all aerials were mounted at 40 in the open avanti sigma 4/cte skylab/antron 99/1/2 wave silver rod/5/8 silver rod/sirio 2012 antron was brand new and was so bad i gave it to my mate who was helping
I had 2x originals. my dad threw them both away! We are not talking! I had one we took out on a pump up mast, i had one mounted at 45ft to the base and we also had a special roof rack adaptor to put it direct on the roof of the car and would drive to locations then install it. Height makes a huge difference, if you shove aircraft aluminium tube up the first 2 sections to strengthen them they are indestructible. The biggest issue was keeping water out of the swr bar. Power handling was big and the only other vertical home-base cb antenna i'm interested in is the Ham international Big Mac! I don't think you understand angle of take-off and how this changes with height and different antenna.
You are correct in what you say, the Sigma IV is electrically equivalent to a J pole. In other words, it`s an end fed half-wave. The radiating section is a half-wave, the rest of it is just quarter wave sub matching.
@@W4MBU The J poles are all without any ground plane, because of that the return currents are following the coax and also made through stray capacitance's. This is ok if the feed point is high impedance, (half wave), If you move too far away from a half wave those currents increase and become difficult to deal with. I have seen j pole type linear stacked arrays though, these are just a half wave j pole with another half wave section on top, with the two connected by a 180 degree phase delay section.
Exactly I had a Sigma 4 this guy can explain all he wants but what really matters is how the antenna performs that was one of the best antennas ever made
its been one of the best antennas i bought i moved to the usa AZ and bought another one not many place i cant get to and with the Zetagi 1k bi-linear i can heat my radio room as well its all about setting it up corrctly
I had one too and it did very well. I just thought it was so big vs. 5/8 wave (like 1/2 the weight) and did basically the same so I'd prefer to have the smaller antenna. Good to hear you are happy with it. Where are you located, maybe I'll hear you on dx! Cheers.
Are you on about the origins avanti us antenna I had one strapped to my chimney stack at 30 ft with a inserted strengthener pole inside worked the world on 11m and cb
Interesting, maybe the Sigma 4 being a half wave, having a higher take off angle, helped in your case. Curious, what was the height above ground? How did you know it did better? It's sometimes hard to tell without a literal A/B switch comparison. Cheers!
@@Z28videogates i have put my sigma 4 beside the top 10 cb antennas on the market and its outdone ever one of them. Where did you get your info from ,I'm sure you haven't sit them side by side because you would have seen the difference for sure. I bought my first sigma 4 in the late 70's when they first come out and sense then its been copied as a patriot and a lot of other names and had remained to be the best vertical available to the public. I don't think I would get online and run down any antennas without having the proper equipment to judge them by and the ability to stand 2 antennas up at the same time to see the real difference.
@@stevecox765 Love the feedback! I'm curious more detail of testing you did. I really did test the 1/2 wave, 5/8 wave and Sigma 4 with A/B switches and the Sigma 4 was a needles width stronger than the 5/8 wave (like 1/5 of an S unit). For that test, both antennas were the exact same height above ground (around 20 feet at the base). When I raised the 5/8 wave around 7 feet higher to match the tip height, the 5/8 was stronger. My conclusion was the gain from the Sigma was really due to it's height above ground at the start point (1/4 wave higher). Similar to a J pole. Unfortunately all my testing was done back in the 90's and I didn't have access to a camera. @@Z28videogates for some reason this guy has a problem with the Avanti Sigma that was one of the best antennas ever made I don't give a damn what he says all I know is the thing worked it had excellent ears and was one hell of a skip shooting antenna and I am using it to this day and I have done a side-by-side comparison and it always outperform the 5/8 wave
My dad purchased a Avanti Sigma 4 my father is an electrical engineer when setup the antenna it blew away all of the 5/8 wave all of them I had people who are twenty miles away and told me I was putting 1db more signal on them than a 5/8 wave the antennas were at a similar height my ears were tremendous and you're going to come out with a stupid ass video and say that it's on overrated I showed this video to my dad and he's still laughing you can say what you want the Avante Sigma 4 one of the best omnidirectional antennas ever made I am still using this antenna today and I am still outperforming 5/8 wave antennas again you are entitled to your opinion but I do not agree with you
This guy is a joke Mister know-it-all Avante Sigma 4. And the vector 4000 remake excellent antennas I have made contacts all over the world I live in North Florida and if contacted Belfast UK like it was a duck walk I have talked to my friend in Chicago when skip dx is running and he said I was blasting his speaker this guy can talk all the BS he wants these are very fine excellent antennas in my opinion and my dad's there better than any 5/8 wave I won't argue with an electrical engineer but I will argue with the guy in the sunglasses but then again everyone has their own opinion
Hey where are you living now bro I don’t ever hear you on the radio anymore. I still have a RU-vid video of me having a shoot out with somebody and also of me shooting skip. Anyways 73’s bro spark dog just got down from the LBC
wrong....... most antennas have the maximum field strength at the feed point regardless of the design. yes the sigma IV is a Jpole and yes it's a 3/4 wavelength
Yeah well she was a real sea beer you'd know how to use an antenna analyzer and you can set that sigma at a 7/8 wave and then when you set it up if you go to put it at 50 ft or 80 ft you make that all Tower and then put the antenna in the neck that's how I set them up and they always work fine and I'll give a damn you can compare any antenna to the sigma that I set up at 7/8 wave and you're not going to beat that sigma at all I don't give a little hot rat's ass wet until you try and these are facts I've done it over and over through the years I used to set them up for people just like that and then people is very happy so maybe you can use an antenna analyze set it up at a 7/8 weight maybe you'll get better results
