CBBC BACK ON BBC TWO! | A Chance for Childrens on Linear TV?

It seemed that CBBC would bid farewell to linear TV in the next few years, being consigned to the iPlayer as an 'online only' channel.... until now... possibly!
It's been announced that over the next 8 weekends, a selection of CBBC programmes will air on BBC Two during Saturday mornings! Should this go well, there may be hope for at least part of CBBC to remain on linear TV in the future, with potential expansion! Join me as we discuss the news and see where this venture could lead!

Moving CBBC to BBC One/Two would be ideal, since they did it with BBC Three a while back, also it would give today's kids the experience of coming home from school at seeing their favourite shows for an hour to two hours.(At least, the ones who still watch TV.)

There's something nostalgic about the thought of children's programmes being shown on the main channels as opposed to having a channel of their own! I think it's the memories I have of coming home from school, switching on the TV and watching CBBC or CITV.🙂

The strand has already been brought back on BBC2 before but only for the simulcast of the recent CBBC Saturday morning variety show block called Saturday Mashup which launched on September 30, 2017

Bit of nostalgia there. Until I was 8 we only had Channels 1-4 and sometimes 5 when signal. Soon as back from school CBBC or CITV was what to watch. Plus weekend mornings or even weekday mornings.

To be honest this could work. We haven’t gotten any preschool programs airing in the main adult targeted BBC channels for like 9 years now. Originally CBBC and CBeebies were dropped from BBC1 on December 21, 2012 with the blocks being removed from BBC2 on New Years Day 2013 two weeks later and instead only broadcasted on their dedicated channels. This was occurred around 2 months after the UK & Ireland analog cut where they stopped using the 4:3 480p analog signals and moved to full 100%digital with 16:9 720p-1080p widescreen aspect ratios. BBC1 was among the first BBC channels to get an HD feed on October 24th that year when the analog service was terminated permanently

That sounds pretty great. I hope the experment goes well as it be nice to see CBBC as a block on BBC One and Two again. Didn't realize BBC took broadcasting rights of Pokemon as ITV had it for years (they showed the original Indigo series, Advance and it pretty much became a main stay from Dimond & Pearl).

I didn’t realise they eventually got Advance, I remember being jealous of my friends with Sky getting to see it as soon as Ruby and Sapphire were out. But a bit later, I stopped watching much TV in general because of video games and the computer, and books.

@@kaitlyn__L TBF when Pokemon Advanced was on ITV it was part of Up On The Roof which was like at 7 or 8 in the morining on a Saturday or Sunday. I was a earily waker kid back then so I saw it myself at the time.

If I remember it would be on BBC2 on the weekday mornings but on BBC1 on the weekday afternoons. I remember that as I used to watch 50/50 on there from the CBBC Block on BBC1 back in 2005

I think it’s a good idea for increasing accessibility to those that can’t afford a way to watch streaming on-demand. But I don’t see it being widely watched. I’m only speaking from my own experience here but my 7 year old doesn’t like any linear Tv and wants to pick the exact programme she wants to watch when she watches it. And even my 2 year old is like that to a lesser extent. On a recent holiday where we only had linear Tv he kept asking for specific programmes. But even if the majority don’t watch it, serving underserved communities is absolutely something the BBC should be doing. That’s the wonderful thing about being funded the way it is, they don’t have to worry about ratings.

Most of these shows mostly come on ABC ME (originally known as ABC3) , or 9Go! early in the morning, which just to let you know are Australian broadcasters for anyone who lives outside of Australia.

According to the TV guide on BBC iPlayer, CBeebies will be airing on BBC Two as well as CBBC. On 3rd September, CBeebies will air from 6:35am until 7:20am and CBBC from 7:20am until 10:00am.

Well, I feel like I've been taken back in time with this news. CBeebies and CBBC aired on weekday afternoons on BBC One from 3:05-5:15. On weekday mornings, there was a CBBC block from 7:00AM-9:00AM, followed by a CBeebies block from 9-10:50, then they'd have the schools programming Then on Saturdays, BBC One would have a CBBC block from 6:00AM until 12:05PM. Honestly, I'd love it if One or Two returned to kind of how they were in the 2000s schedule wise.

Definitely a big fan of this. People (especially those on the internet) seem to keep forgetting that some more rural parts of the country isn't as well connected to the internet as most cities. I definitely know parts of rural Wales where dial-up is still the best option and trying to watch content on dial-up isn't exactly an enjoyable experience.

something to point out too is that BBC just announced that they'll be taking part in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest (as the name implies its Eurovision but with kid/teenage singers) and that the Final will air live on both BBC One and the CBBC channel so maybe that's another way to test out CBBC programming on the main BBC channels. and most of the work on the UK's entry will be done by CBBC themselves, BBC One are just showing the contest along with CBBC

I like this idea. They tried it with mashup. I actually feel that the digital channels for kids were unnecessary as they could have had better programming on BBC one and two with CBBC instead of the generic daytime stuff.

This move I find very controversial. The reason why I dislike it is the fact that they got rid of the slots on BBC one/two at the end of 2012 as demand was going down and more kids were watching through iPlayer and the channels themselves so much like BBC Three, the question remains “Why did it leave in the first place?” However, on the other hand, it will be a great way to connect with children as when CBBC “Moves online” they will still have an audience on BBC Two and possibly BBC One since BBC Two has began airing CBBC again since 2018 and it has proven successful

Wish the shows would return to linear channels. Would hate for Blue Peter, Newsround and Saturday Mash-Up to completely disappear, especially as Mash-Up is the closest to the live Saturday morning kids TV that used to be on with cartoons, comedy sketches, music performances, games and gunge.

Of course before 2002 all children's programmes were all one one strand as C BBC with C added to the BBC One and BBC Two logos and children's programmes on the C BBC Strand being shown on BBC Choice, the biggest mistake was launching the two children's channels, they should've kept the BBC as it was before 2002 when it was all simple, along with the most important shows such as The National Lottery, Stars, Winning Lines and Jetset, The Generation Game, Kilroy, City Hospital, Grandstand, Live & Kicking, Panorama, Westminster Live, Tomorrow's World, XChange, Working Lunch, Esther, Football Fever, Despatch Box, Timewatch, Horizon, Holby City, Top of the Pops Crimewatch and Watchdog, along with the Learning Zone and Open University and Schools Programmes such as Numbertime and Words and Pictures, instead it just got bigger with the launch of IPlayer and Sounds and launching in my opinion the worst programmes created such as Strictly Come Dancing, The Apprentice, Mock the Week, the 2002 version of Top Gear, Would I lie to You and more programmes that were made after 2002, something which can't be forgiven for. And now they have to make budget cuts because the corporation got too big.

In Australia, we have ABC Kids. It used to be called ABC for Kids and they backflipped on the name a couple of times, but it has always been a part-time channel. In the past, it was shown as a 6 hour programming block twice per day and only showed on ABC1. When ABC2 and ABC3 came around, it was spilt between channels, before it became exclusive to ABC2. ABC3 was just another channel which also showed children's programming, but for an older audience. And that used to be solely children's programming until recently when it became ABC Entertains, which is general entertainment, but older children's programming still shows. But what I'm saying is that throughout its life, ABC Kids has been a part-time channel, and it hasn't really changed much.

What's odd about this, it will also appear on international versions of BBC two (rebroadcasts in different countries) which normally wasn't the case and would display the BBC hd thing for those strands. But CBBC programming will also appear on BBC two in the netherlands

You won't be catching Blue Peter first as they rerun it on weekend mornings the episode from the Thursday. I remember them doing simultaneous broadcasting on BBC2 a few years back. I think doing something like that would work on a morning and then a couple of hours - 4 till 6 - on an evening. It works for younger viewers with the Cbeebies equivalent on ITV & Channel 5 (Little Be on ITVbe & Milkshake Mornings on 5). Then BBC3 can be on all day potentially displaying programmes off BBC1/2 that weren't shown because of children's tv. On a morning there's nothing much on BBC2 and most of their good stuff is relatively family friendly and after 7pm. Kids TV isn't needed during the day so can display normal programming. I think if they did do this then BBC2 will be a family channel and BBC3 will be on all day showing all the usual programmes on a morning and evening on BBC2 - maybe less family friendly

Citv is still there on sky and freeview and tiny pop on sky and/or freeview well depending on what country and region you live in you would get different kids channels or no kids channels at all

I liked the concept! Except for the fact they didn't make any new kids idents, I feel like if they used some ccbc ident and added "on BBC two" I feel like this would be ideal for kids up early, zapping throught he channel, if they saw the CBBC idents I feel like a kid would stay on it

In Scotland there is a CBBC block on BBC Alba all shows are dubbed into Scottish Gaelic there was a similar block in 1990's it was on BBC ONE Scotland then it moved to BBC TWO Scotland it was known as Children's BBC Scotland after the 1997 rebrand it became CBBC TWO Scotland(due to being on BBC TWO)if your interested there is some CBBC Scotland stuff on RU-vid it starts with the end of the Tweenies then announcer told us that CBBC in Scotland continues all morning then a few trails for other programmes then we heard this announcement The School holidays have started and CBBC TWO Scotland is here all morning every morning 50.50 is next

If this was gonna be for the weekday morning aswell they could stretch the strand on bbc two to replace the bbc news that they have 10am to 1pm probably with cbeebies shows as the older kids be at school by 9am and in holidays cbeebies could have an early mornjng slot and the older kids a later morning slot...if the strand came back in the afternoons would it be fronted by a person or two introducing the shows in a kids like style studio or jjust the shows just coming on as normal one by one ...I remember the morning and afternoon strand on one and two even on holiday days... there was also a strand in the 80s early 90s on bbc two around 1:20pm called See-Saw showing things like postman pat,Bertha, gran,flumps chockablock ,greenclaws to name a few

Could itv do the same at the moment they just simulcast citv on weekends mornings till 9:30am... weekday after noons be a change from game shows or do 3 till 5 or citv strand then have one gameshow or out the others on itv4 or 2 itv use to have pre school kids shows Weekdays at 12:10pm like rainbow,let's pretend,mooncat and Co, allsorts etc before this morning came along took the slot

I never saw the point of having two BBC children's channels anyway. I mean, what was the point of it? CBBC is meant for children who are at school right? And CBeebies for pre-schoolers? Most of the day CBBC is broadcasting the vast majority of children are going to be at school, right? The only children that would be watching weekdays between 3am and 4pm are going to be kids off school sick or pulling a sickie. Am I right? Would make more sense if CBBC only broadcasted from 4pm to 7pm during weekdays term time. Any sane person would combine the two children's stations so between 7am to 4pm it is pre-school content and then for school kids 4pm to 7pm. In any case by the time you start seniors you have out grown most of the content on CBBC. Is it just me that kind of misses educational programming that used to be on BBC1 and ITV on weekday mornings between 9am and noon?

In the current climate, it’s pointless. The target audience know where to find CBBC and CBeebies, and it’s not by going to BBC2. I see why they’re doing it, but I can’t see it picking an audience unless they’re doing something new such as Saturday Mash Up. Utilising BBC2 would make more sense once CBBC Channel closes as a linear outlet for iPlayer content. Whilst the BBC does have to cater for everybody including those households who cannot afford or have fast internet access, the vast majority of kids would go straight to iPlayer than they actual live channel. We all grew up at different times and whilst I get your experiences watching TV growing up, it’s totally different for the kids of today. Arguably, they’ve never had it so good.

I think BBC3, BBC4, CBBC and Cbeebies are pointless. Most of the day's programming is repeats. There has been no new TV on BBC4 for years. Scrap the lot of them.
