This video is about the Honda CBR 300 oil and filter change. The same process can be used for the CB300 which doesn't have fairings. We found out the fairings do not have to be removed to access the oil filter. They only have to be loosened enough to access a bolt behind the middle fairing. This will let you remove the lower cowling/fairing to get at the oil filter cap. This is a long video and is meant as a guide to help you through the oil change process. There may be other solutions or methods but this is what we went with. Some may not approve of my methods (re-using the oil washer and gasket or the type of oil) but I confident there is enough information to help most people get through the job.
Note on audio - the audio is a voiceover because the original audio was muffled and unusable.
Tools Needed (in addition to the manual)
Socket set (12mm and 8 mm sockets), Allen Keys, Rags, Oil Pan, Flashlight, Manual, Engine Oil, Filter and Gasket, Rubber Gloves, Phillips and Flat Screwdriver, funnel, torque wrench, Oil bolt seal, Bike Stand and some newspapers to place under the bike while draining.
Required Oil (when changing the oil & filter) - 1.5 liters (1.6 U.S. qt)
When changing the oil only - 1.4 liters (1.5 U.S. qt)
Oil - 10W 30 (I used 10W 40 which will work too without issue)
Oil Filter - Honda Part # 15410-KY-901 (I used K&N Part number KN-112)
Oil Filter Gasket - Honda Part #15412-KY-901
Oil Bolt (Crush) Washer (12mm) - 94109-12000
Technical Info:
Torque settings for the Oil Filter - 9lb-ft (12-m, 1.2 kgf-m)
Oil Drain Bolt - 18 lbf-ft (24 N-m, 2.4 kgf-m)
Notes and Corrections: In this video we hand tightened the bolts and checked them again with a torque wrench off camera - We recommend you invest in a torque wrench. Remember tighter isn’t better but the instructions in the video will get you by.
The filter spring - the filter spring was put back in off camera.

Very nice and helpful video! I'm going to try changing my oil soon as my 300 is getting close to 3k miles. I hope it goes smoothly and will be rewatching this video as I do it.

Thank you for showing which screws go where. We just did an R6 shock swap and in the process mixed up the shouldered screws... Ours were missing the rubber washer on a couple, which explains everything.

Oil is dripping from the filter area but I've tied the screws as recommended by manual. Is it normal that it's dripping the first couple of times I've turn on the bike?

Did you tilt the bike so that it was bolt upright when checking the oil level (as opposed to checking while the bike is on the side stand)?

Does the oil from the glass window disappear when you start the bike? Because I’m scared I didn’t put enough in

After I put the oil and turned on the bike how long until the oil settles down after I turned the bike off. So I can see how much to add after the oil is in the filter.

@14:14 😑that is the bolt that is rounded out on my bike. I've already successfully changed the oil but now I'm trying to change the oil filter on my 2017 Honda Cbr300r but cannot due to this bolt being so severely rounded out. Do you have any advice on how to extract it???

thank you for this video, if it wasn't for that i wouldn't have been able to do my oil change...much appreciated!!!! one last question though, when the bike is turned off the oil level is good, but when i turn the bike on, the oil almost disappears from that little gauge window. when I turn it off the oil goes to the normal level....is that normal?

Hi Bruce. Sometimes you have to level the bike to see a true oil reading. As long as you filled 1.4 to 1.5 liters you're good to go. When the bike is on - the system is using the oil so the level won't show properly. When the bike is off the oil is resting. This is when you want to check the level. As long as it is at the right level and the oil is clean all is good. I hope this helps.

I could for the love of god not get one of the screws out, the one near the header. However I managed to get all the other ones out, and it was enough to peel back the fairing so that I could access the oil filter. Have to be careful not the crack it.

Hi Jonathan 4,5 and 6 metric hex/Allen key. They come in most sets. I have a set that came with my socket set. If you don't have any it's a good investment. They under $20. Make sure they're metric. Amazon has them too. These will do. I pasted a link below. The kind that attach to a screwdriver is good too. Good luck. www.amazon.ca/dp/B00I5TH074/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ss_1?pf_rd_p=1977604522&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B0025ZA3EQ&pf_rd_m=A3DWYIK6Y9EEQB&pf_rd_r=3R4SFP3GPCC4P1E02W7X

Hi, I bought the cbr300 about two months ago. i am currently at 1100km and it was recommended to change the oil at 1000 (which I will do as soon as possible) I now use my car in fear of overusing my bike. do I need to change the filter for the first oil change, or can I only change the oil? thank you
@cooldadreviews8580
@cooldadreviews8580 8 лет назад
Hi Alexandre. Don't worry about not riding your bike. It will be fine. The service manual recommends the oil and filter be changed the first time around. You'll want to change the filter because bits of metal and debris will be caught in the filter. This is normal and part of the break-in period. I recommend you change both the oil and the filter. You can order all the parts you need online. I have a list of the OEM parts in the description to help you out. Good luck!

Going to do my first oil change this weekend. I've had the bike for a little over a year (the dealer did the first pre-winter oil change). Im selling the bike in the spring for a new, bigger bike. Is it worth it to go through the pain in the ass of removing fairings/changing filter, or is changing the oil sufficient. Granted, I'm going to garage it soon (i'm in new hampshire) and will sell it early spring

@cooldadreviews8580
@cooldadreviews8580 8 лет назад
Hi Bruce. Yes you can. The only difference I saw between model years is the color. The oil and filter change is the same. The fairing removal is the hard part and they come off the same way. Good luck.

it seemed like he poured too much oil into his bike. 1.5l with oil filter change. but as you added to oil filter. you might need another 1.4l the same amount changing oil without changing oil filter required. and even in Thailand 10w30 is used as original factory maintenance program after sale.

I was able to access the bolt without doing anything... BUT I scuffed up the fairing and was so pissed off. I see why you need to remove it now. I left the bolt off cause I don't need that shit. Honda get with it!
@tomzauto
@tomzauto 4 года назад
We'll check it later with a torque wrench? Why not just use it now...? Also you might want to take the filter back off and install the filter spring, without out it most of the oil will bypass the filter, plus once a crush washer is crushed it's done, just get a new one they are cheap. But other than that nice step by step tutorial.

Very detailed video! I think I’m going to use a hole saw and drill holes Then line the edges with some rubber trim. That’s a lot of work to get to the oil filter and drain plug.
@myildirim
@myildirim 7 лет назад
I just could not take the drain bolt off, and broke my socket wrench while trying. Then tried to tighten it a bit more but, not sure if i could do enough or not.... :( So for those who really wants to take that drain bolt off, get a big long socket wrench.....

What's the cost to have a dealer do it
@cooldadreviews8580
@cooldadreviews8580 7 лет назад
Hi True Stuka. (I like the handle) It depends on where you take the bike. The dealer will always be a little more. Oil and Filter change may run you $100+. I know someone who paid $140. They'll do a chain clean and lube up all the moving parts. A straight oil change is easy to do and fun to do. No fairing removal. You don't really need to take the fairing off if you want to change the filter...just pull back the lower fairing to get at the bolts. I took it off because I don't want to risk cracking it. That's me. If you have tools the cost of an oil change is your time and $15 in oil.

ill give you a like but you can change oil filter w/o removing fairing.
@cooldadreviews8580
@cooldadreviews8580 7 лет назад
Thanks for the like. You're right you don't need to take off all the fairings. But some people who are new to motorcycles are afraid to break or crack the fairings so this video shows you how to take them off. Once you have that hidden bolt off you can actually pull back a lower Fairing and take off the oil filter.
