Here's a segment of the kids news featurette, In The News - which deals with the subject of Central America, touching on peace talks going on at that time in El Salvador between the government and rebel leaders, with President Reagan's Special Envoy to Central America Richard Stone serving as a mediator; as well as Stone's meetings with Nicaragua Sandinista leader Daniel Ortega who supporter the Salvadoran rebels. Mention is also made of Reagan ordering naval exercises off Central America, and comparisons to Teddy Roosevelt's "big stick" policy of the 1900's; meetings held by the "Contadora Four" which consisted of the leaders of Mexico, Panama, Colombia and Venezuela; and Cuban leader Fidel Castro's support of the Salvadoran rebels.
Also includes a commercial break for Swiss Miss Pudding Bars - frozen pudding on a stick, in vanilla, chocolate, chocolate toffee-coated, and variety packs.
These aired between commercial breaks during Saturday morning cartoons on CBS affiliates from 1971 to 1986 (and was for that network what the long-running animated Schoolhouse Rock featurettes were for ABC). For many years, it was the one of the only times a CBS News production had theme music. This particular segment aired at the end of The Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Show.
