However, if you include the show where Ed Asner plays Lou Grant after WJM fired everyone but Ted Baxter, there were 4. If you include The Betty White Show (NOT at all a spinoff) but with Betty White and Georgia Engel...there were 5.

Thanks. I'd never watched this episode. The scene with Mary and Mother Dexter at the end is the best part by far. Shows how far Mary had come over the years. The Mary and Phyllis connection worked well on the Mary Tyler Moore Show because she was just one part of Mary's busy life. Having Mary appear just to remind us of what a horrible person Phyllis is and yet Mary puts up with her anyway is just kind of pathetic. I also don't know if Cloris or this show's writers knew who Phyllis was by this point - it's telling just how much better she was in the guest appearance on the final MTM episode. The workplace stuff is flat too, although it's a nice tribute to recently passed Garn Stephens for you to upload this now.

@thomash.schwed3662 Год назад
According to the description, yes, CBS was rebroadcasting episodes of Mr. Benny’s television program during the summer of ‘77. During the early ‘90’s, CBS would follow a similar practice by rebroadcasting “All in the Family” in conjunction with its twentieth anniversary. And, occasionally they rebroadcast selected episodes of “I Love Lucy”. Frankly, I like the idea of doing that as I’d much rather watch programs like those than to watch a lot of the over-priced but cheaply produced programs the networks air nowadays, particularly the so-called “reality” programs. Who knows? If the brass at the networks had any common sense, given the present circumstances with regard to the writers’ strike, perhaps we may see at least the temporary return of some of these programs to the lineups. My guess is the networks would have some of the best ratings they’ve seen in decades.

The commercial for The Betty White show helps remind me that Cloris and Betty both had the wrong after-MTM project. Betty should have got a spin-off of Sue Ann Nivens and Cloris should have got the series based on a new character. Sue Ann could have moved to Los Angeles to work in television only to find that an ex was her new boss. Sue Ann would fit very well as a small fish with a big ego in a huge pond. Betty as Sue Ann and John Hillerman (keeping his role as her ex/boss) could have been fantastic together in a War Of The Roses type of antagonistic relationship. Sue Ann could be softened into a protagonist by struggling to maintain herself (an old-fashioned, midwestern sex viper) as an older woman in both an occupation and city that only values youth. The show could have been more of a workplace sitcom in the vein of what Frasier would be later. Phyllis was certainly a character that just could not sustain a weekly sitcom as the main character. She lost alot of her edge and interest once she moved out of Minneapolis but, as this episode shows, when she resorted to her MTM behavior or tricks it only generated sympathy for the other characters. Cloris would have been better served with a fresh role (also a widow living with her in-laws while working in SF City Hall) as a leading character trying to navigate her new life.

While Valerie Harper had success with the Rhoda character apart from Mary, Cloris Leachman struggled with the Phyllis character apart from Mary. I think the reason for this is that it was much easier to transition Rhoda from goofy sidekick to leading lady because the character was sympathetic to audiences and wasn't "too" goofy. Phyllis, on the other hand, was much less sympathetic and was very out there. Phyllis was one of those characters that audiences loved to hate. When she was spun off into her own show, this obnoxious weirdo was suddenly morphed into a leading lady character you were supposed to empathize with. It just didn't go over well. Had Phyllis been a series without the MTM baggage of the character, it very likely would have been more successful because there's nothing inherently wrong with the series itself, just audience expectations about the character of Phyllis.

@@philiphatfield5666 Definitely unlikeable and snobby! And she’s a hag. I recall the family watching maybe once or twice at first when the show briefly did well in the ratings. Then, there is unlikeable in real life. Valerie Harper was an entitled actress who pulled a stunt to get more money on Rhonda by threatening to walk off, and she got it. Then, she tried the same thing with the Hogan Family. They fired her, and the show went on without her. I can’t believe she won her court case against the show. I don’t think she should have won.

@@SJ-bi9wu I don’t know where you get that. As far as Valerie Harper, those are published accounts of her actions. As far as Phyllis, it’s just a personal assessment of her TV character.
