It vividly remember watching this when it originally aired. There are ways in which it's a bit cheesy (I think the song stinks- and I'm sure that was canned applause substituting for an actual audience being present) but all reservations pale when you just consider the stunning star power gathered in that room. Truly extraordinary.

The end of the 90 s , hardly anything left of golden yesteryear stars , and the next generation is peeling off fast . So what are you left with of golden tv ?? Actually, my guess is that there was no audience and that we were hearing canned applause, First of all, we are never given so much as a glimpse of the audience. Also, if you listen carefully, there is really not any change in the sound of the applause ... with one of the kids on The Waltons receiving the same amount of applause as Lucille Ball. Celebrities were also more accustomed to working harder back then. This whole thing could have taken an hour to tape but the celebrities kept on smiling through it all.

Two commenters have spoken about Jackie Gleason being missing from this lineup, but I’m wondering more about where Valerie Bertinelli, Mackenzie Phillips and Pat Harrington, Jr. are. They were just as big as Bonnie Franklin on One Day at a Time and yet only Bonnie appeared in this special lineup. Why? I’ve wondered for a while, and I’m genuinely confused. What could’ve happened to prevent the appearances of Valerie, Mackenzie and Pat?

They were probably apportioning the stars based on the newness of the shows. Notice Linda Lavin was the only star from Alice and that premiered half a year before One Day at a Time. Bess Armstrong and Lynnie Green had the disadvantage of being two unknowns in a brand new show and weren't invited to the outdoor "roll call" send off.

Amazing that the old guy agreed to be a part of it, he for sure was the greatest talent on that stage that every actor there would die to work with him!

Some stars, I guess, could not make it such as Eddie Albert, Max Baer Jr, Valerie Bertinelli, Amanda Blake, Donna Douglas, Marla Gibbs, Jackie Gleason, Pat Harrington Jr, Polly Holliday, Beth Howland, and Vic Tayback among others.

DAVE CROWTHER Cher was going to be there but was ill. I wondered also about Suzanne Pleshette, Desi Arnaz, Harvey Korman, Doris Day, Brian Keith, Joyce Randolph, Ron Howard. I think Ron Howard and Harvey Korman were under contract with ABC so they may not have been allowed to participate.

Amanda Blake wanted to appear but was forced to drop out , Gleason wanted to be paid, and Max Baer Jr. wanted to distance himself from the Jethro character. Cloris Leachman wanted to appear too but she was under contract to A.B.C. who refused to let her appear.
