Trigonometry is a branch of mathematics. It deals with triangles. The sum of angles of a triangle is 180°. Obviously, the sides too must have some relationship. Trigonometry deals with this relationship that exists between sides w.r.t. angles.
Such a relationship is easy to comprehend with a right triangle. A right triangle obviously has two acute angles. Each acute angle can vary between 0° and 90°. For a certain acute angle, the ratio of sides, taking any two at a time can be determined. Six such ratios are possible. Each ratio has a name. They are sine, cosine, tangent, cotangent, secant, and cosecant.
The ratio between the opposite side to the acute angle and hypotenuse is a sine. For a given acute angle the sine ratio is a constant, irrespective of the size of the length of sides. Cosine is the ratio between adjacent and hypotenuse.
