A true masterpiece of my childhood. 20 years later, I still consider this an important piece of Canadian television history

I got up way too early for my Saturday morning cartoons when I was a kid. They started at seven, and I was up at around 6:30 afraid to miss anything. Then this would play, in 1991. God this brings back so many memories.

One thing I love: The sunrise is realistic according to the time in Montreal (if it's 3AM in Vancouver, it's 6AM in Montreal.)

Any Canadian like myself who was a kid in the 80's (I was born in Hamilton Ontario 1981) remembers staying up late and seeing this Sign Off video and also "Log Drivers Waltz" and "Night Walk". I have such a strong Nostalgia now for those 3 old Canadian clips that I almost cried while watching this CBUFT channel 3 sign off.

This used to play very early in the mornings, back when TV stations were not 24 hours (early 80s). i loved it back then, and the stillness of the outside world (no traffic sounds) added to the poignancy of the vignette. Haha, even as a small child i got what this piece was tryingto do...

Merci à Calixa-Lavallée pour la composition de la musique et Adolphe-Basile Routhier pour les paroles originales en français. Un chant patriotique canadien-français chanté la 1ère fois pour la St-Jean-Baptiste de 1880. Beau souvenir de mon enfance au canal 4.

Nice. Surprised that, as of '09, there was still a station that signed off. Odd, however, not to hear an announcement of frequencies and such -- unless that was done before the anthem was played.

Getting up super early on the weekend and turning on the TV to CBC to hear the SMPTE bars go BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP then getting the coat of arms before hearing the truly definitive version of my home & native lands anthem.

@PatchesRips Oui, 1976 ! Et cette version n'a été jouée qu'à la cérémonie d'ouverture et de clôture des Jeux de Montréal, le Canada n'ayant gagné aucune médaille d'or. (Le seul pays hôte de Jeux Olympiques a n'avoir gagné aucune médaille d'or lors de ses propres Jeux) L'une des plus belles interprétations de l'hymne canadien à mon avis, avec cuivres, percussions et violons. Malheureux qu'elle n'ait pas été jouée pour une médaille d'or aux Jeux de Montréal !

This station is actually channel 26. It's only channel 3 on cable in Victoria.

I cheered for Canada, and I'm (US) American. It just wouldn't have been right to see Canada lose on their own ice (in their own country) playing their national sport during those Olympic games. Great version of your national anthem, and I like the animation as you move from the west to the east, Pacific to Maritimes.

And thats when i woke up off the sofa and said.. ok time for the bed.

I wonder, does that animation still plays out now in 2014? Or is Radio-Canada 24/7 now and never signs off?
