In this Geauga Firearms Academy video Kim demonstrate what to do when Stopped by Police. Also check out one of our most popular concealed carry videos as well bit.ly/2dpp8hC One of the most important points to understand about routine traffic stops is there is NO SUCH thing as a ROUTINE traffic stop! Anyone with anything on his or her mind could be behind the wheel. A traffic stop is a total craps shoot. It could little Granny Smith with a bad taillight or it could be a serious felon who has nothing to loose. Although the registration of the car can provide basic information to an officer, the car could be stolen. There is no way for an officer to know for sure who is in the car and what their intentions are.
The bottom line is, a traffic stop is a high stress situation for law enforcement. Anything that you can do during a traffic stop to reduce the level of stress will work to your advantage. If there is a question in an officer’s mind whether to issue a warning or citation, how you conducted yourself will certainly play a huge part. Not only can it potentially help you go about your day without a citation, more importantly in can ensure the safety of both you and the officer.

Definite thumbs up! If I may add, a few things I've ALWAYS done when being pulled over in addition to doing everything stated in your video are: 1.) Put my four way (emergency) blinkers on. 2.) Shut off the vehicle. 3.) Remove the keys from the ignition. 4.) Display the keys out the window with arm fully extended. 5.) Place the keys on the roof of the vehicle. 6.) Return hands to the 10 and 2 o'clock positions until the officer instructs you to do differently. You'd be amazed how quickly these actions diffuse an already tense situation for the officer. This "Pro Tip" will help! I knock on wood saying this, but I drive professionally and have been pulled over COUNTLESS times, and more times than not, the officer actually THANKS me for these actions and MOST times doesn't even bother writing a ticket. Courtesy and common sense go a LONG way during traffic stops. The one and ONLY ticket I've gotten (knock on wood) was in 1984 for speeding. I've driven well over a million miles since then, have been pulled over numerous times as a CCW holder, and am usually thanked for my actions before the stop is concluded.

Great lesson, today, folks! I constantly rehearse this methodology since I "drive while black" every single day and have been stopped several times over the past 15 years (never issued a citation, though). I strive to preach this message to my loved ones as often as I get the chance because this re-enactment is really universal in its message even to non-CCDW/CHL holders. The basics of how to be kind to people have been forgotten by so many in our society and it is shameful that so many people out there don't know the basics of proper etiquette. Law enforcement officials should always be treated with respect regardless of what we think and that is the bottom line, IMHO. I don't take it personally and I don't get defensive when I am stopped because I don't know what that officer has been through that day and I don't know what information he/she has matching my description so I trust the good Lord that the System will work for me and it's going to be alright and it always has been for me! Your message bears repeating by all of us about this, whether we carry or not.

I always tell my kids. Manners matter, and they’re free. Use as many as you’d like. As a big guy (6’3”, 300 lbs), I’m immediately seen as a threat. I got out of my car at a stop, because I was embarrassed that I’d been stopped. Won’t do that again. Could’ve gone very badly.

guys...excellent video. wished more people actually took the time to think about these scenarios and used common sense. As a 16 year police and swat team veteran a little south of you guys in Ohio, this type of good information is much appreciated. Most cops don't care about a citizens CCW provided they are responsible, but as you said so traffic stop is ever routine!!!! This is a very dangerous time for Law Enforcement Officer's, 122 killed in the line of duty in 2016 so far sadly, so we all should be on high alert. but regardless of race, sex, creed, etc as along as you are responsible with your CCW we will always respect your right to carry it legally. in fact I highly encourage it! Especially for women!!! Great job Kim in getting the message out there! Keep up the good work both of you! Stay safe & watch your 6! P.S. since your husband made the joke, I think wearing that top you probably would be getting a warning.... ;) lol

__Hi Guys, May I also add that turning off your engine/keys on dash and having your interior lights on at night also add to an officer's comfort level. I would suggest always telling the officer what you are reaching for and where your hands are going to before you do it. Never make a move for anything inside your vehicle unless instructed to by the officer and do not make any sudden or abrupt movements 'ever'. Should you drop your licence, permit, registration or insurance card at any time, ask the officer if it is OK to retrieve them. Reaching for anything out of their sight could mean trouble for you. __The hands, the hands, the hands. This is what a cop wants to see at all times. Be polite, comply with instructions and all will go well. __Thanks and keep up the great work!

It seems to me that a lot of folks have no idea why a person should act this way at a traffic stop. A good portion of the comments are either along the lines of "nice rack" or some reason for assuming the cop is there only to harass you. But thank God a few folks understand what this is all about: RESPECT. The overwhelming lesson here is this: even if you do all kinds of things differently from this very well done video, if you just remain calm and THINK, you'll be fine. If you cannot understand why a police officer would be concerned about concealed weapons, you have no business carrying one. Responsibility matters, folks, and so does respect. I was once pulled over by a police officer who had a reputation for being "heavy-handed" to say the least. I was concerned since I did not have a CCW permit, but in MO you didn't need one to carry in your vehicle. When this officer asked if there were any drugs or weapons in the car (I was delivering pizzas at the time and there had been a rash of drugs being "delivered" through pizza places) I told him no on the drugs and yes on the weapons. I told him the pistol was in my console to my right with rounds in the magazine but not in the chamber. That let him know I at least had a passing familiarity with my weapon and that I respected his circumstance. He replied with "thanks for your honesty. If you leave yours alone, I'll leave mine alone." It was a non-issue from then on. I got my (well-deserved) speeding ticket and went on my way. As long as you are respectful, they will be too. They have to assume the worst about you to be safe. Show them that doesn't apply to you and that you care about safety, and they'll respect you for it. DAMNED GOOD VIDEO! You have a new subscriber. Thanks for the video!

they forgot to add that before reaching for your info you need to first notify the officer where in the car your information is located and then ask permission to reach for it, if you just start reaching for things after informing the officer that you have a gun on you that's going to raise the stress level of the officer in a big way and very quickly, even if you don't have a gun on you you should still tell the officer where in the car your info is and then ask permission to reach for it BEFORE you start reaching for the info

Thanks for the video. Good advice. The method that has worked for me is simply keeping my "CCW" together with my driver's license. I simply present them both to the officer when asked for the license, s/he immediately sees the CCW and things proceed super smoothly from there. I don't get pulled over every day but, it's happened several times over the years. Never any problem.

Keep it "paper clipped" to your drivers license since you will need to present that anyway. Keep the license, and hence the "CCW" in a handy compartment of your wallet or something like that. Find one and you find both. :>)

no requirement to say anything in georgia. disclosing ccw is really only a big deal to civilians anyways. people i've pulled over tell me that they're carrying and i just simply tell them, "if you don't pull yours out, i won't pull mine out"... and the traffic stop moves on.

I wish Ohio was like Georgia, I can understand why they want you to say it, but in all actuality they can see it on their computer screen. I think of they want to know if you have it they should ask, because they're in the situation of a traffic stop a lot more often than the person being pulled over. That would make it easier on the person being pulled over and make things smoother I think if they asked the question.
@phillyska
@phillyska 7 лет назад
Jason Gelles we can't see who's got it on our screens in georgia. all I see is your address, whether or not you've got insurance, valid registration, drivers license expiration or if you've got warrants. pretty sure all other states can't see your ccw either.

An officer in Ohio 100% knows IF (you are driving a vehicle that is register to you) and you have an Ohio CHL, in Ohio it is on the screen. Which is why we teach all students to let people know who will be driving their car even if they don't have a CHL many an officer will until know who is in the car.

I've been stopped 7 times in the last 12 years of carrying. I've been asked twice and once after finding out I had a gun, I was stripped of my weapon, placed in cuffs, and my car was tossed. My general rule of thumb is to assume every cop is a dick and don't say anything you don't have to. More often than not, my interactions with cops has been fairly positive, but there is no need to divulge any unnecessary information to see if this is the one that's going to make you have a bad day. You have the right to remain silent, and I personally recommend exercising it as often as possible. The trick is to not be a dick yourself while exercising that right because that's just going to exacerbate the situation.

@danburch9989
@danburch9989 7 лет назад
That may work in NC. But in other states, your weapon must be locked in a case, unloaded. NYS doesn't recognize the Firearm Owner's Protection Act and therefore, you can be exposed to felony prosecution even though you had no intention of violating any law or committing a felony with a gun.

Same here in AZ. No CCW required to carry concealed or open. A CCW permint is required if we travel to a reciprocal state. But criminals carry concealed in all states regardless of any laws. That's why we need to carry.

When I am stopped by the Police and I am carrying. I get my drivers license and CCW permit out. Then, I keep my hands at 10 and 2 on the steering wheel. I hand the to the Officer my license and CCW when he asks for my license. Normally, the Officer will ask me where my weapon is. I tell him/her. Then I follow the Officers explicit instructions until the Officer believes that any personal danger to him is minimized.

Hi you guys! GREAT vid AND commentary! As I've said before....I run with a lot of LEOs and they have mentioned to me many times what THEY like to see. Trust me, they've already run your license plates and know you have a CCW. The next question they have is are you interested in causing them any harm. You better believe a bad guy isn't going to tell them jack. The universal sign for carrying is to place your hands on the steering wheel or dash with your palms up. They can clearly see you don't have anything in them at that point. They will usually ask if you ARE carrying and you can tell them what you want when asked. I usually mention I am packing if they ask..and it IS loaded. A gun without ammo is no more than a club. Just remain respectful and don't make any sudden moves to grab at anything and you'll usually not get any grief. Tell the officer your registration is in the glove box and let him know what you're reaching for. If your gun IS in there...let him/her know and let them know you're complying with their requests. Polite and compliant is the best path or you're going to get them going and that can go anywhere. I KNOW the law that you have to tell an officer you have ANYTHING...gun or peanut butter is TOTALLY unconstitutional. You have a 5th amendment right not to speak at all. So THAT should be addressed. By the way....the NRA has asked our instructors not to use the term "weapon" in our classes any more. frikin lawyers......HATE THEM with a passion! That being said, I was born in Steubenville Ohio....BFD...hehe Now live in Wyoming...far more friendly gun state. We ISSUE you a gun when you cross the state border! hehe kiddinOn another note....your husband may have married above his pay grade! hehe You're pretty cute there darling......some would say the same about me.....my wife's a hottie too.....and I'm just another dummass pilot! Merry Christmas you guys!!!

I'm a nearly 40 year veteran police officer who is retired from full time service but still giving my time away as a reserve police officer. I suggest staying away from acronyms. Rather, I find it much easier to comprehend actual words, ie "Concealed Carry License", when speaking with citizens during traffic stops and other contacts. Since different states use different vernacular, and reciprocal agreements between states allow citizens to cross state lines, acronyms become particularly confusing to officers on the streets. I, for instance, retired from a large police department in the Dallas/Ft. Worth, Tx. Metroplex, and now I work in a medium sized department in north-eastern Oklahoma. Texas and Oklahoma use two similar, but different, terms to describe this license. Using the actual words makes it easy for cops to understand exactly what it is you're attempting to tell us. These are nice little videos, and they're informative for the public. Thank you for thinking of your clients AND those of us in law enforcement work. Is Kim your wife? She's doing a nice job. PAY THE GIRL! LOL!

Another very informative video. Thank you guys for taking the time to put this info out there! I liked the little humor at the end! Great tips! I have kinda wondered about since my carry position is at the 4 position and my wallet is also around that area too. Might make it easier on everyone involved to just put my wallet in console or glove box so I don’t have to reach around the same area as my firearm.

+michael Gans - So I just checked and there are approximately 1.1 million LE officers in the US. You are grouping them all together and call them all worthless Sh1tbags because you had a bad experience in your locality? That' nice. What exactly was it that ianwilson4286 personally did to you? Was he one of the officers that mishandled your situation? What career field are you in?

Michael Gans You may have some intelligent input to debate here...but unless you support your argument, it's meaningless. If you feel a certain way, state it and then back up with specifics. If done, it will show others why you feel that way (even if others don't agree, it will give them an understanding of why you feel what you do). The process of doing this is civil debate. You went off on ianwilson like he personally took you birthday away or something. Do you know him? Do you know anything about him? I don't know much about him but I know enough about life to not assume anything...it'll burn you over and over. It just seems like you're filled wtih anger and just come to the comments section to sprew out the hatred. Just go relax, have a drink or something, and take the edge off. Life is too short to live in a constant state of...whatever you're in now.
@dewrus2153
@dewrus2153 7 лет назад
Michael Gans I never said I knew everything about you...in fact that was my point is that you provided little or no information about you to support why you feel the way you do. The only I know about you is that you made a very strong judgement about someone you don't' know anything about. Do you know how many domestic disputes he's helped settle? Do you know how many drunk drivers he's helped get off the road? Do you know how many times he's saved someone's life on the side of the road after an accident? Do you know if he is an upstanding member of his community who gives to charities? Do you know anything about him other than his name and that he works in LE? No. My observation that you seem filled with anger came directly from the following blurbs I will quote from you... -you're a piece of shit -moron cops -low IQ's -stupid people -don't do shit -you worthless shit bags -you dirty cops Anyone with an IQ above 1 could read your words, hear the tone, and make that observation...it's not a stretch. You claim to have seen a great level of corruption which seems to have formed your view of LE but you don't say anything to support that. You may have very well been a victim of what you say...but we don't know because you have not supported anything you've said. You just come out blasting away. Why do you feel the need to do that? If you want to share a message of some sort, that isn't the method to use. As soon as you spout off with diarrhea of the mouth and personally attack a commenter simply because he stated he was in LE, you lose any credibility you once had. If you met Ian Wilson at a party and asked, "Hey, what do you do for a living?" and he said LE...would you have erupted into a spiteful tirade saying what you typed here on the wonderful anonymous interwebs? I sure hope not.

I had other friends who went from local police to NCIS & FBI, and I grew up with cousins who joined a major metropolitan police department. They all had stories about traffic stops. No such thing as routine. *Besides, when you get pulled over, you have no idea what sort of horrific situation the officer may have just come from... Domestic murder scene, multi-vehicle accident w fatalities, suicide, hostage crisis...* Don't provide additional stress, and they'll usually appreciate that.

You may want to ask Twinsburg Ohio Police officer Joshua Miktarian about that but you can't as he was shot and killed by a male nurse who had his CCW permit. The suspect was stopped for loud music. You should look his story up. It happened back in 2008. And as far as the boobs go it would take a lot more than that to take my attention away from her hands and what else is going on in the vehicle. I did the job for 10 years in Virginia. My father did it for 30 and retired as the chief.

Just hand police officer your license, registration, and CC permit. Don't announce you have a gun, just show permit, if your state requires you to disclose.
@antonybooth3293
@antonybooth3293 7 лет назад
Or do none of that if they don't have reasonable suspicion to detain you in the first place. You should start by saying nothing; not answering any questions without your lawyer present and if demanded of you, to remind them of your constitutional rights to remain silent, not act as a witness against yourself and to not be required to submit to any searches of your person (including being ID'd), or property. If they have reasonable suspicion that you committed a crime, you are only required to identify yourself, under the constitution and Supreme Court judgments. You are not required to provide vehicle registration information, or prove that your state has monetized and approved your 2nd amendment rights with a CCL.
@danburch9989
@danburch9989 7 лет назад
You don't get Mirandized unless 1) you are arrested and in custody and being questioned, or 2) the officer believes that any responses to the questions asked may lead to self-incrimination. If you are lawfully stopped for any traffic violation, you have to show your driver's license (which is required to drive), therefore, you are showing your ID. Probably extends to car registration and insurance. If you're walking down the street, then the question of proving your ID is different. States vary on this and also the CCW permit requirements.
@antonybooth3293
@antonybooth3293 7 лет назад
Dan Burch What does being notified of your rights have to do with anything? That's an obligation of a cop to notify you when being arrested, but those rights are yours, always.
@danburch9989
@danburch9989 7 лет назад
... and you should know what your rights are. Miranda Rights do not have to be read after every arrest especially if the officer has sufficient evidence to guarantee a conviction. Unless the officer is going to question the subject, he or she does not have to inform the suspect of these rights. If a self incriminating statement is voluntarily made, it may be admissible in court. Self incriminating statements made before an arrest may also be used as evidence during the trial.

In Minnesota you tell them you have a firearm when they ask if you have one. If they don't ask I don't tell. It makes more sense to do it that way because you can usually develop a rapport before they find out. I have been asked twice now, both times after they have my license. One time they wanted to see my permit, the other time they didn't. I have been pulled over without them even asking.

Darin Dishman negative. As an officer, when someone hands me just a permit, I'm thinking,"ok, this guy has a gun but I don't know where it is and I don't know what he intends to do." just tell us where the weapon is and keep your hands on the wheel. As stated, I'm police and between that and the military, I have almsot a decade of experience. I still do as they do in this video. it's just being polite and safe.
@bonecrusher2986
@bonecrusher2986 7 лет назад
I realize the law varies from state to state. In my state, one is not required to notify the officer and frankly it isn't any of their business if one is legally carrying or not. Even so if at any point I was asked to exit the vehicle I would notify the officer that I have a valid permit and I am carrying before I did. and I would honor whatever state I happened to me be in law regarding this situation. in reality if someone is handing over a permit, you should know ok, this person has a valid permit so I assume they are carrying. if you feel it is necessary to know where the weapon is located, then ask. if the person appears to be agitated, have them exit the vehicle an disarm them. Nothing wrong with putting yourself in a safe situation but there is no need to be anal over a lawful carry either.

Don't wind the window down. At best, crack it if you must. Check your state laws. In constitutional states, ID is only required when reasonable suspicion of a crime has been articulated to you. Unconstitutional states may only require you present ID, or verbally identify yourself and not actually be required to hand anything over, thereby allowing you to present your ID against the window, without ever handing it over. Remember, if you hand over your ID, the cop can claim to not be detaining you, but you can't leave because he has your ID. Cops claim they can smell alcohol when the window is down, if they want to perform a vehicle search, regardless of whether they can smell anything. It also gives them the ability to reach into your car to unlock it, grab your keys or throw something into your car and claim they spotted something suspicious and perform a search. Cops are your friends in most circumstances, such as policing public events and attending domestic disputes, but when they detain you, they are most certainly not your friend, even when communicating in a friendly way. Their job in that encounter is to try and determine some reason to arrest you, or at least find reason to elevate the reason they detained you from something like a minor traffic violation, to a more serious offense like drugs possession. Cops use traffic stops as a means to determine all forms of crime, instead of using detective work. It's why 'routine' traffic stops can end up in a gun fight and why police put so many resources in to traffic harassment. Cops want to get the most out of any traffic stop and a result is getting you to answer their questions until you've said something that incriminates you.
@420thehardway
@420thehardway 7 лет назад
"traffic harrassment" spot on. I am not anti police what so ever however i am against their corruption and harrassment which is rampant all over. This video was great , but it also only one scenario. Which happens to be pretty white girl with rack displayed and calm smooth white cop who knows her and is making the video on a sunny day in his neighborhood. I've never been rude or disrespectful to an officer and nor have I done any major over the top driving to warrant fear of a cop , and I am also your average normal non threatening white guy. Yet i have experience at least a third of the officers i've had to deal with in my 40 years as being harrassing , insulting, ignorant and antagonizing. Y is that? Thats what needs to change as well. Also , when registering for CCW or whatever (i do not carry or own a gun) Don't you think a simple course illustrating rules and regs for pull overs accompanied with a hard test , would make things a little better? A lot of people dying lately ya know?
@chrisrawr6177
@chrisrawr6177 6 лет назад
Sadly most police these days don't know the law and while following the law to the letter will get you off with a judge in the meantime the police officer will either draw his weapon on you or smash your window and drag you out. Even worse after the fact the police officer will probably not even lose their job let alone face criminal charges. I am not anti-police but they should be required to know the law as well as follow it just because your a cop does not make you above the law.

In Oklahoma, it is now simply called a license to carry a handgun, as we now have open carry. I've been pulled over four times in about the last two years. I roll down the window and keep my hands on the steering wheel, and wait for the officer to ask for my driver's license. I then hand over my driver's license and handgun license together without saying anything at all about having a weapon. The officer knows, when he or she sees my license to carry, that I am in possession of a handgun. Sometimes, the officer will ask where it is. Sometimes they don't ask. If they ask, I tell them. I don't show them. I say, It's in a holster on my right hip. This approach has worked out very well for me so far. Police officers are far smarter than we have given them credit for. They know, when they see we have a license to carry, that we are not criminals. They know the license indicates we have passed an extensive background check. Being courteous and cooperative will make your day, and the officer's day, far more pleasant. If you jump out of your vehicle and start swinging your arms around, shouting a mouthing, reaching inside your vehicle and, well, it's been nice knowing you.

Second, if your pulled over doesn’t the police usually “run” your information first before approaching your vehicle and when they do, will it show that you have a CCW on file? When in doubt remember to disclose everything regarding your CCW license. Thank you for the great video. I live in Las Vegas, where the police are pretty nice most of the time. They don’t play around or take any crap from the criminals.

My CCW instructor, who is also a police officer told us that if we were to get pulled over, roll every window down as far as you can.

I have a 2005 Ford Fivehundred. all my pertinent information (registration, insurance paperwork, etc.) are in the dash storage, which is right o top of the dashboard. I usually open that and remove the paperwork and leave the compartment open. Being as the officer who is pulling me over probably knows my face (we probably did some work together), Things go well for me.

If it hasn't been mentioned before. at night it is a good idea to turn the inside light on. Walking up on a dark vehicle is a cause for increased stress on an officer. Being able to see all the occupants will be better for the officer. When pulled over at night, turning on the inside light, and as shown here keeping my hands in plain sight, being polite and cooperative with the officer's requests always played in my favor. I have a valid Ohio CHL but haven't found a suitable holster to carry my handgun yet. Thank you for the informative video.

I agree with you . You show respect and no aggressive displays, then most law enforcement officers will treat you the same way. They may quarry you more then once, but usually they will not usually in-cumber you . As long as you understand that a concealed in one state, is not an right to carry in someone else,s state. The best way to keep yourself out of out of the frying pan, is to keep your firearms separate from your body , and in an different compartment then you are in. an make sure no other person you are traveling with has access to your firearm.

In some states it will show when the plate is run that the owner of the vehicle has a CCW. Having a CCW means you do not have any felonies. Now this is just general info I was told by a officer doing traffic duty at my construction site, but it does go a ways to calm an officer's nerves, so to say.
