Some of them snow stretches looked wild and freaky to traverse. The low snow year certainly helped thru hikers this year in Colorado. Colorado is having an average to snow year so thru hikers this year will have it a bit more challenging. Congrats on the 1k subs!

2018 was definitely nobo friendly. Even the heat in New Mexico wasn't bad, I remember low 90s a couple of times but nothing unbearable. That's what's interesting about thru hikes, the conditions can be wildly different from year to year. And thanks for noticing the 1k subs... it was harder to get 1k subs than to thru hike the CDT! haha

That early season snow really is tough to traverse in the sun -- I was up there in 2019.

Just subscribed, your videos are well done and I like your commentary about what has been going on off camera. Love the San Juans, I spent a little time in the Weimineuche wilderness last summer.

Hell yeah 1k! Besides the mud and obstacles, Colorado looks like it treated you well so far with the weather and lack of snow. Unstable snow bridges over water sounds pretty sketchy though, as did that ledge right after you put on the microspikes! What a beautiful state. What month was this section?
@SeekingLost
@SeekingLost 5 лет назад
Haha thanks! Finally haha. I had great luck with weather in Colorado for the first few weeks. A local in Breckenridge told me the rainy season doesn't usually start until July. And that was pretty much spot on. After July 4th it always seems like something was brewing. In the end, I had very few bad weather events in Colorado. This was The first day of this section was June 4th

Pretty cool seeing that chimney free of snow , we we're post holing there pretty deep
@SeekingLost
@SeekingLost 5 лет назад
Wow yeah I can imagine walking by and seeing that chimney sticking out of the snow. It's amazing how fast that snow melts... you were there what, late May? I left Chama June 4th

Seeking Lost may, 19 th we were there and my how different it looked , I took 15 days off after the San Juan’s road walked into Del Norte and returned there, you must have been pretty close to me upon my return on trail.
@SeekingLost
@SeekingLost 5 лет назад
@@baskets8429 Ah you were a couple days ahead of me then. I took a lot of zeros in Colorado so you were probably putting some major distance in ahead of me. I think I remember seeing your name in a register or two but it wasn't in the normal pack of names I'd usually see. I think you're the first person I've heard mention Del Norte. I had to look it up haha
@baskets8429
@baskets8429 5 лет назад
Seeking Lost yea I took a zero in Rawlings but Colorado we flew by it pretty quick did a 40 into copper mountain and some big miles overall , Del Norte route was nice and flat I got sick of post holing so hopped onto that lol was pretty easy terrain after that San Juan’s section
@SeekingLost
@SeekingLost 5 лет назад
Dang, a 40 in Colorado, congrats. Yeah nothing too difficult after the San Juans. But no 40 miles days here for me haha. Got one 40 in north of Rawlins, just to do it really, but didn't want to "have to" do a 40 mile day again

Pine beetles suck it seems they are really getting to be a big problem. I hate seeing our Forrest getting destroyed by the beetles. Love your hikes they're the best 🙂🌲
@SeekingLost
@SeekingLost 5 лет назад
It's crazy to see how wide spread those pine beetles are. It seems they can't be contained or controlled. I wonder what the long term effects of them running around unchecked will be. Better hike now before the pine beetles take all the trees down with them :)

I figured you'd appreciate those :) A friend of mine was about 2-3 weeks ahead of me and he had a completely different experience through here. Once that snow starts melting it goes fast

What was your starting date? And how long did it take you to get there. Seems like this year you would have to start even later.
@SeekingLost
@SeekingLost 6 месяцев назад
I started April 21 and left pagosa springs june 4 or so. Check the link in the video description for my blog which has all the exact dates. 2018 was an extremely low snow year and us CDT hikers had it easy in that regard

Did you wish you had an ice axe? I enjoyed this video!
@SeekingLost
@SeekingLost 5 лет назад
Actually, I felt pretty comfortable with just the micro spikes. I did a lot of traverses on steep, sketchy slopes later on in the Wind River Range (off trail high route) and became quite comfortable in the snow on just the micro spikes. Still, I wish I had the ice axe in the Winds. Two of three in my group in the Winds slipped and fell down this one snow slope that had a safe runout, so no danger, but we learned what angles are safe and which one's aren't. At one point, we worked we spent a couple hours working our way down ledges, boulders and steep snow before reaching the steepest snow slope yet. This one had a cliff for a runout several hundred feet below. It would be hours to turn around. I was about to step out on it and start kicking steps for the other two in my group when they said, even if you go we aren't following you! And I'm glad they said that, I was legitimately scared of that slope. We ended up turning around and going back, wasting 5 hours total. Looking back at Colorado, all of this was a breeze in comparison!
