Hi Dan, big thanks for such a great video! You really explained the test setup & method very well, without too many unnecessary & perplexing RF expressions :-) Could you please share the part number of the toroid core please? Are there any specific parameters to look for - material, form factor, other - for the best performance? Many thanks!

Thanks for the kind comments. You will want a ferrite core that is optimized for low frequency operation and is large enough to not saturate. The core I am using is a Wurth 74272251. Check Digikey PN# 732-13463-ND.

Thanks for making the video, I really like the clamp you made and hope you continue to make more emc related videos. Do you intend to release the clamp files?

Your welcome. I am planning on making a couple of more EMC videos. Do you have a suggestion on a particular test? Possibly one on ESD or another on surge immunity with fast transients. I can release the clamp file.

@@DanPattenAudioG33k Hi, a fast transient (61000-4-4) or surge test (61000-4-5) would be good, especially if you can take the same diy approach to creating the test equipment. I just purchased the same ferrite and will replicate the conducted immunity test soon. Just a thought, you could also replicate this test but with a diy CDN?

Dan,i finally recreated this test and it worked very well. I used an ERASnyth micro to sweep from 12.5MHz to 80MHz and an older rf signal generator to sweep from 150kHz to 12.5MHz. I tested my circuit at 3VRMS with AM 1kHz 80%, dwell 3 seconds. My amplifier was a mini circuits TIA-1000. Would you consider releasing the clamp files or selling the clamp on ebay?
@chris_lynch
@chris_lynch 2 года назад
The TIA-1000 spec is from 0.5MHz to 1Ghz. It didn't work very well below 0.5MHz so I calibrated at 0.5MHz and adjusted at higher frequencies as you mentioned in the video.

Here are the STL files. Cool to see that someone else is able to replicate the setup:) Let me know if you can access the files. drive.google.com/drive/folders/1uxxUUJwXSxQiBre6Q6QOTvL-qIm6u0fm?usp=sharing

Hi Dan! Back with a few more questions, if we are interested in tested at level 3. Would we need to increase the power on the power supply and or change the 6dB attenuator to a different power wattage? Or would it just involve changing the amplitude on the function generator?
@DanPattenAudioG33k
@DanPattenAudioG33k Год назад
Moving up to the next level would require an amplifier that is capable of more power which would also require higher voltage from the power supply. The attenuator value of 6dB would stay the same and the power rating could probably stay the same.

Thank You for interesting video! Please, could You explain how is made primary side of toroid with BNC? How many turns and what type of wire is used there?
@DanPattenAudioG33k
@DanPattenAudioG33k 3 года назад
Thank you. I used a Wurth 74272251 hinged ferrite core. This core is optimized for lower frequency use. There are only 2 wraps on the core and I used a 16AWG (~1.29mm dia) stranded wire with Teflon jacket. My LCR meter at 10KHz measures the 2 wraps at 43uH. The Wurth datasheet has a plot for 2 wraps and specifies an impedance of ~350ohms. If I take my measured 43uH*6.28*1Mhz=270ohms. So not too far off specification. A rough approximation of the impedance from 150Kz to 30MHz would be ~200ohms. Hope this helps.

Hi Dan! Thank you for the great video! I wanted to ask if you know what power your 6dB attenuator is? I see there are options for 5 W, 10 W, 30 W and 50W.
@DanPattenAudioG33k
@DanPattenAudioG33k 2 года назад
Your welcome. The 6dB attenuator I used in this video is rated at 25W. Can barely tell that it is getting warm.

@@DanPattenAudioG33k what would happen if you use an attenuator with a lower power? I currently have one that is 10W.

Should be fine if you are using similar amplifier to unit in the video.

Hi Dan, thank you for your quick responses, one more question, could you elaborate on how you connected the BNC connectors to the 16 AWG standard wire that is inside the clamp? Was there some sort of adapter or coaxial cable involved?

@@DanPattenAudioG33k Thanks! The description for the amplifier in the link says it is 100KHz to 30MHz. Do you not go up to 80MHz when you test?
@DanPattenAudioG33k
@DanPattenAudioG33k 3 года назад
Testing to 80MHz would be nice because that would match the CE specification. However, this amplifier's frequency response is really down by 40MHz. Even with this amplifier's limited bandwidth, it still gives me an indicator of how well the EUT will perform at a "real" test lab. :)
@jimmyromanous3674
@jimmyromanous3674 2 года назад
so you have a calibration setup, OK where is your EUT? You haven't done in real testing nor shown any qualification of your EUT????
@DanPattenAudioG33k
@DanPattenAudioG33k 2 года назад
I believe you have missed the point of this video. The purpose of this video was to explain the basics of this test, which I believe it does. The video shows possible methods for "pre-compliance" testing, it is not intended for replacement of a certified testing lab. The equipment detailed provides a very low cost method to partially replicate the test so that you will have more confidence in your EUT when certified testing is performed :) I did not show an EUT in this test but did show delivered voltage across the 150 ohm resistor. The delivered voltage across a broad frequency range was demonstrated showing that the RF generator, RF amplifier, attenuator and bulk clamp do indeed work for a limited range and power test.
