Here's some video of the Derecho that hit Cedar Rapids on August 10, 2020. It's our family's perspective - just one among hundreds of thousands who had their lives disrupted by this natural disaster. Sadly, some lost their life in the storm. Thankfully our family was spared from injury.

There was no warning. It just came on and the power was out. It turned from a sunny nice day to a derecho late morning/early afternoon. Thanks for sharing. Glad you and your family were unharmed.

My god!! I don’t think the rest of the country got the full scope of wth happened there! The media barely covered it and it was in the midst of the beginning of the protests so coverage was so limited. This was a unbelievable phenomenon that happened and I’m so sorry I hope everyone there is getting what they need to move forward

We had a 2 hour warning in Michigan, but it had already made its way across Iowa and was tearing up Illinois, and there was no way it was going to miss Michigan.

I heard "storm" . Ive lived through hundreds of "storms". Im almost 70 and have never experienced anything like this. I was not prepared. I had nothing to compare this to. It was a real shock.

You said you had no warning. Did it in fact form right there near Cedar Rapids? Otherwise, I thought they put out ample warning way ahead of time for other folks.

Yes, we knew something was on its way, but we didn't know it was going to be a land hurricane (what the weather reporters kept calling it eventually) My son and I were at home having a zoom meeting with someone in another town a little south of Cedar Rapids. They had an edge of the storm, but Cedar Rapids and Linn county took the brunt of the storm. In fact, my husband was up in Waterloo and had no idea it was that bad. He said he could see the dark clouds and where he was, it was a little breezy but barely any rain. When he finally called me back, I told him that we lost all of our trees. I don't think he understood until his drive home and suddenly there were trees all knocked over. It was scary!

Wow It was a scary time and the lack of preparedness was shocking even though I know Covid was going on. There were big businesses without generators.

It was very quiet after the storm, no birds nothing. Just a lot of sirens and emergency vehicles trying to get where they were needed.

I saw a Video from this same storm and it showed a deer running around as if the world was ending, i felt bad for the critter.

Looks like you've a fair amount of cordwood banked for this winter and the next. The drier can be burnt this winter, whilst the greener can cure for the next winter's burning. I just Pray that Winter doesn't dish out to you Iowans something as ghastly as was dealt you about 2 weeks ago.

What do you mean? Meteorologists have a pretty good handle on what causes derecho's. It's warm, moist air colliding with cold(er), dry air and forming a big-ass storm with incredibly strong downdrafts. Essentially, a several hundred mile wide, long lasting "micro-burst".
