You guys push a lot of content towards new players, which is amazing and healthy for the format. But I've been waiting for someone on this platform to go over advanced techniques and metagame analysis for experienced cEDH players or even Modern, Legacy, Standard players who find there way into the format, like I did. I want to know EVERYTHING I'd need to know to get that last 2% of edge when piloting Ad Naus or Gitrog or other types of strategies. But I'm not trying to understate how important this content for new players is. It is invaluable to the growth of the format.
While I get what you're saying. And think that would be cool. I think that final percent(s) come from practice and your individual meta. The right call at your table with that exact composition would only be the right call there, not at an almost identical setup somewhere else. Deck composition is a major point. My friend plays in heavy creature/stax/turbo meta. I play in midrange and turbo land. Our decks are designed to hand different threats. So my call is anticipating a different threat then he would expect.
@@energeticgorilla I personally don't use proxies but I'm very much welcome to others using them. I 100% understand that not everyone is in the same financial situation as I am and I don't personally want to prohibit someone from playing cEDH with me because they couldn't afford cards. Edit: I only personally ask that the proxy very clearly states what card it is proxying.
Always discuss with your group. I've played cedh in areas that have been hard-core no proxy. I've played in areas where every card has been proxied. The general census is proxies are perfectly fine as long as everyone can clearly see the card
I like Anje because you get to say "Draw, land, pass" and do everything at instant speed. Your turns are actually very quick. You end up doing a lot on the end step before your turn.
@Sid The sloth you can always ask if it's ok to shortcut it and write what are you gonna fetch and using the land you're gonna fetch if there is not any deck manipulation that will made you enforce that deck is shuffled. And fetch after your turn the written lands tapped(if used otherwise untapped)
I started cedh playing kodama sakashima. I recently built codie to dip my toes into popular win cons like adnaus and breach. The first game i played with codie my pod was very critical of my plays and rude because i had never resolved those cards before. Being talked down to, and told i had no way to win, was the most disheartening experience I've had in magic.
You have to understand that a large amount of people are pitiful and have no self esteem so they need to fo things like that, I wouldn't worry about it
Godo was my first deck as well. It taught me how to evaluate when to go for a win or when to hold back and look for disruption or interaction before a win. I've won games dropping the 1 blood moon then going by for 4 turns after and no one had any mana to counter my godo. Verus I could have ramped out harder. Little things taught me how to manage your turn and respect other decks. Also taught me how to win turn 1 with treasonous orge 😂
I just got into cEDH after watching you guys and Play To Win and I really like Cam's Jeska/Ishai deck and built it up so far it's been fun but there are definitely has some challenges.
The bit about transitioning to cedh with a commander you already play is really true. My favorite deck in casual is my Krark/Sakashima list and my transition into cedh was made very simple because I already felt comfortable with it.
when I saw Elsha I fell in love with her. she was my first commander deck and first cedh deck at the same time. elsha brought me back to magic after nearly 10 years
This is perfect. I remember I was giving shimmer zur as my first deck to play absolutely had no idea what to do but my friend helped me win the game. After I built godo which helped a lot
As a Yuriko player I can back most of the info except that in cEDH it is mostly not tuned to flip huge CMC out of the top (with exception for Blinkmoth infusion and Temporal Trespass for a somewhat not very reliable plan C). In my experience Yuriko is rarely the fastest of the pod, so the player is asked to respond faster decks with counterspells and spot removal until an opening for Thoracle or Doomsday is found. But man, you nailed the “leveling up” this deck provides. It is highly interactive and FUN.
Built Yuriko because I already owned Thoracle and Consultation, and I've been able to match other decks in my meta because it scales up. I'm still probably the cheapest deck there, but it definitely punches above its price point.
@@tmakalpha1 if your group allows it, proxy all the pieces you need, because even at full power Yuriko is not a Tier 1 deck. If your group doesn’t, they are playing against your wallet and that Is just sad.
Gitrog was my first cEDH deck I started playing it about one year ago after only playing MTG for a 3 year as I really like land now a play a variety of Jund decks mostly.
My first deck was Niv Mizzet Curiosity. I really enjoyed the play style and took it from casual to cedh. Currently I'm a Gitrog player so I've upped my combos difficulty level a bit lol
Really interesting episode, you actually got me interested in Tasigur lol. I started playing cEDH with a budget version of Niv Mizzet Reborn Curious Control and I think that deck is really cool to play for newcomers. It has interaction, politics, card draw and a compact A+B combo in the command zone. I just built Codie too, still on quite a budget. I basically can't afford any of the decent mana rocks. Will you make an episode on playing cedh on a budget?
@@SpitePlays I agree, and so does my playgroup. But we play in a LGS, so they reasonably want us to play with non proxies (when they organisms tournaments). We can play with proxies otherwise.
@@ciaosonoAlbertoG oh I see. Have you talked to the owner about tier 1 con 25 card list proxies. Its like 25 cards from the RL that no one wants to bring out or pay for. Helps and I take to my store owner about it. He implemented it into the our next big tournament coming up on Saturday.
after you guys' last podcast of cool commanders no one plays I decided to make a dargo thrasios evolution based deck to cheat tidespout yada yada yada, and I just wanna thank you guys for being awesome
@@SpitePlays na I had a omnath deck that I turned into windgrace then i tried turning it into gitrog and stumbled onto the hand shaping thing at the end of turn with gitrog in a game had to look up rulings for it which found the craziness of cedh and such
Kess became my first high power level deck. Showed most of my love to my current build which is a mind wrenching/multi path version that uses thousand year storm and dream halls to finish with exanguinate/torment of hailfire. Thinking of ramping up the power and converting to doomsday combo
Emry is what made me wanna play more competitive but my Tymna/Malcolm deck has very quickly gained a reputation for being very strong best win probably being in a pod with Tangarth, Ashaya, Selvala which was full triddlestorm winning after taking out the null rod that shut us both down and before the storm could start twiddling😄 Currently testing out Vadrik Storm
I was already sold to this chain, but with this addition it is only the icing on the cake. I would like one day a pod without blue. thank you for the high quality content.
I got started with godo. Its a very fun deck and helped me understand when and why to mulligan a hand. One of my biggest "level up" moments in all of cedh is that any wording on a stax piece other than "Can't" means that you can play through it. I won a game with urza poly tyrant through 5-6 stax pieces by casting 1 cmc spells into a chalice on 1, bouncing the pieces by casting 1 mana counters targeting my own spells on the stack to break through the stax by bouncing them and eventually doing an infinite mana combo to win with urza.
Is elsha of the infinite good? I got the precon when it came out and kept refining it, now it can play as storm, underworld breach or top. Also teaches how to play on the stack and you get to constantly do stuff.
Kess is my first ever cEDH build and I absolutely love her! It was watching Playing With Power that inspired to build her. She offers so much versatility which I love.
I know I'm a little bit late commenting but I've gotten several people started in cedh and I have had luck with teaching them on Chulane and Animar. Creature based strategies seem to be my most effective way for welcoming people to the format. Also I'm a little stuprised not to see any turns decks here, my go to turns deck is Edric and that's another creature based straight forward deck.
Excellent video, spot-on talking points, and enjoyable to watch! I hope to get more friends into cEDH with at least a few options. Thanks for all the hard work on the editing of this video for time stamping.
So I have been playing magic the gathering since 2019… my favorite format is commander. Yesterday 10Feb23 I Try cEDH for the first time and they Let me borrow a Boros deck winota, joiner of forces and it was easy to pilot. I really think there is not science in this deck just beat face. I came back home and decide to make 2 cEDH decks, they are Narset, enlightened master ( extra turns and combat phases) and Yurok, the desecrated (landfall)…now that you mention tasigur, the golden fang and I can build it with big creatures I’m curious and I will start building it.
This is the best video I have seen to date, I'm not going to be able to afford the fast mana base but I really want to know which I should pick kinnan or kess I just can't decide! Kinnan looks fun but kess is teir1 I just don't want to shortchange myself
I'm strongly against Godo for new players. Yes the strategy is simple, but the player is often powerless at most times of the match, and they're not really interacting until they're winning or dead trying.
Timmy's like big spells and creatures Johnny's like combos and complex plays Spike's like to well spike just to clarify. Tasigur appeals to all 3 profiles and definitely makes for one of the best beginner decks as you can again build him however and still have a good shot at winning with the best part cheating out Eldrazi's but not the old Titans you would have to use a graveborn spell on the stack before their effect of them hitting the grave activates granted the grave still shuffles since they hit the grave but you cheat them out and suddenly started playing Arch enemy as everyone will target you and one person does not get to play.
Not playing Gitrog in cEDH, but I've particularly chosen the frog god to learn more complex playing and gaining confidence with tutoring a lot. :D Certainly though, I only found Elsha good as a cEDH start because I had confidence in playing control and table policing, learned some hard lessons still.^^
Been playing magic on and off since the late 90s, but me and three friends started playing commander last year. My first deck that I made was a random Uro deck. One day I tried Kinnan as the commander instead of Uro and never looked back. I have 8 decks now but Kinnan is by far my favorite, but also a bit too powerful for the group, but there decks are getting stronger with time as well.
I personally started playing cedh piloting gitrog. I originally had it as a high power deck, but I wanted to break the deck by brining it up another notch. Since then, I’ve also piloted urza, kess, and tymna kraum opus thief. Gitrog has taught me many lessons similar to what you gain from playing godo. Gitrog taught me patience and how to sequence your plays properly. It is still to this day my favorite deck that I have ever built and it has continued to teach me lessons all this time
How can I take this seriously without Inalla, Curious Control, Lavinia (jk not a real deck), Frog and Sisay on this list?! Jokes aside, awesome vid, agree pretty much 100%. I think one bonus a few of these decks, especially Kess, have to offer is how easily the core can be moved over to other commanders. Tevesh+Kraum, Rog+Silas, Jeleva, Grixis Pirates, Armix+Kraum...the list go's on. Couple I would throw in there are Kels Scepter and Marwyn Elfball. Kels is in two great colors doing typical dimir stuff with some grind value and she's an outlet for IsoReb, and Marwyn is the most straightforward of the mono green decks. Selvala and Yisan get recommended for new player all time, but actually have a lot to think about. (Yisan is so tough to play!) Can't wait to see more from the two of you. You've got a really good, natural back-and-forth!
My first deck was Nath, I know he's fringe cEDH but I had an abzan elf deck from the lorwyn days which was just brutal, it was able to compete with my friends back in the day who had these competitive level decks. I turned it into a Nath EDH deck (and Rhys, but found Selesnya too boring) Started off as a elfball discard and very quickly became a degenerate Stax deck. So he is my pet deck and was what transitioned me away from the more Timmy playstyle and for that I will always be grateful to him.
I want to get into cEDH for a while now. This video really helps me a lot. Cedh taught me so much about good deck building and I finally found people to play this awesome format. My question is, what is your opinion on Animar as a first deck? I had a list that already was built to win and got me a turn 4 win on Spelltable with my friends. However it is not a cedh list yet. I am thinking to make it my first deck so what do you think, should I go for it or better go with something else? Awesome content as always! Really enjoying your channel. Greetz from Germany 🤟🏼
Hi guys, quick question. From a strictly competitive standpoint, which commander has the edge between Tasigur and Sidisi Brood Tyrant? As both follow similar mill strategies, one generating token bodies in the process, and the other bringing its own power and toughness to the board, this made me ask this. Thank you!
My take is that Tasigur is better than Sidisi. the thing with Tasigur is that you got a combo piece in your command zone and you can have him out turn turn 1 if you have a good hand + due to his delve you can nearly always cast him for B only. sidisi on the other hand is bringing something to the table that most cedh decks can't handle well --> creatures en masse. buuuuut in the end it's up to you and how good you know your deck and how well you pilote it.
Tatyova >> Gitrog. I think Tatyova is a pretty neat starter option, just not sure if it's as strong as Kinnan. Tatyova is very good at utilizing Mystic Sanctuary, enabling you to draw the spell you put on top right away. Tasigur is pretty interesting, but I think Tatyova is easier to build. I ended up having a cEDH deck (afaik it qualifies) because I just kept pushing it more. It started out as my strongest deck, so I rarely hesitated to upgrade it when I stumbled onto something interesting. Out go bad or so-so combos, in go even better ones, out go the cards that are always just clogging up my hand, in go leaner, more versatile options. It's a pretty weird deck, but it's really simple to operate for a cEDH deck, and it's consistent, the two things the deck needed to be.
So I like the godo deck because it can be pretty interchangeable. I have an etali deck where the main game plan is put etali out ASAP and swing and try to play people's won cons against them, helm is already in the list because why not? It's funny! And then you can just swip swap godo, swap a couple cards and it's practically the same deck but now competitive. Super cool deck you can have fun with and play differently depending on group.
I think Korvold is pretty good also as it is pretty simple. Just primarily loop dockside. It is also pretty budget friendly relatively as I have been running a variant that has been working nicely without LED and WOF.
Dawnwaker Thrasios looks fun! I currently run Kinnan Mirrors and currently building Bruse/Kamahl winconless stax but I might pivot to Dawnwaker Thrasios instead because it shares so much components from my decks lol.
As a Najeela Player i have tried where players dont see that I go infinite if they dont interrupt me. I Love that Najeela since it give so manny options, but the mana base is EXPENSIVE.
For finding decks that you plays stuff that you alreadu play, I used to play aggro a lot. Cedh is not really an aggro format, with the exception of godo and winota. are there other options that have aggro decks? Godo doesnt really feel like an aggro deck, since its just waiting until you equip helm of the host (a combo mindset).
My first budget cedh deck was and is Zada, Hedron Grinder. Its not the strongest deck, but people dont expect a goblin deck to kill 1 player turn 3 and the others turn 4^^
My first cedh deck was an Alesha deck I updated into rule of law stax, using Alesha's ability to break parody. The deck is kinda c/b tier but it's super fun to pilot. Now I'm printing proxies for Hermit Druids jeska/ishai list and grenzo snoopsday
Just wondering were a good deck list for Kess would be to start at I had a Inalla deck and this would be a easy move. I don't have a twister so is there a easy replace or should it just be left out as my group does not allow proxies thanks for any and all help
I can't wait to finish my kess deck. What attracted me was how strong her lists are and some of my favorite cards ever are in them. Force of will, necropotence, yawgmoths will, demonic tutor ect. Should I run doomsday and or personal tutor in a consultation less cedh? I was also going to run underworld breach and LED
so I'm just now getting into the format I wanted to play urza, lord high artificer. the meta in my area is more creature heavy and I built kinnen before even watching this video and you guys have made me more into playing the deck in my first tourney this weekend.
My first edh deck was Karn back when the format first started and everyone hated me. My second deck was berserk Rafiq and had a disgusting win rate. Now that cedh is a thing, it's been an interesting shift away from "casual".
This is super useful. I'd also love to hear how to approach and what to do when new to cEDH. Things like reading primers, goldfishing, asking for help, being open about being new and not expecting to win as much as you do in casual till you learn the environment.
Just picked up Temur Malcolm, in the process of understanding all the little niche lines and possibly adding some cards that aren't typically played in the aggro sort of lists.
My first cedh deck was a jhoria storm deck and just recently I wanted to return to a storm deck with abit less power for my more casual pod. Im using sythis, hasn't disappointed so far
after watching some of your guys games i decided to make an anje deck because i really like the mechanic of madness...here's hoping that theres new and powerful madness cards in crimson vow
I started cedh with a Jhoira storm artefact deck almost without control, very all-in ! Step by step midrange play came step by step with experience to become more balance and finaly more efficient than the 1st version 😀 I learnt to answer to my opponent's plays
My entry point was boonweaver karador, I really enjoyed the lines and led to some interesting opportunities. This was also an odd time as it was right when hulk got unbanned and it was a weir hybrid of the tradition boonweaver list with hulk.
The gitrog was my fist foray into cedh lol and you’re absolutely right haha. I now also play birgi and am wanting to try a elsha top haha try different decks in the format.
