Hey Y'all! We are Justin and Lil, just over a year ago we moved our RV to 18 acres of raw land, built a solar power system and now are building our Off-Grid house by hand, together as a family.
If you are new or have been watching us build for a while, support our channel and engage with us by leaving comments, hitting like on our videos, and Subscribing to our channel! If you want to enable Justin's caffeine addiction, and help us out with the build, buy as a coffee using the link above!
In this video, we begin to place the blocking between the ceiling joists on our off grid house build. The walls are 10 feet high, plus our house is a pier and beam foundation, so Justin is sky high most of the day. This puts him close to the sun, but thankfully he is not Icarus and is very safe with lots of ladders, platforms, and tools. He still almost gives Lil a heart attack when he walks across the ceiling joists in his OSHA approved outfit. He may be willing to risk it all for a breeze, but Lil isn't about that life. There's a baby on the way and a half finished house, and breeze or not, ceiling joists are not for walking on.
The animals and children run wild on the Wild Berry Woods Homestead, and Justin continues to work amid child design pulley systems and small building projects.
Justin moves on to the 8 foot walls, and Lil helps Justin measure and discover he's made a huge mistake. It's been a long, hot day and he is tired, but Justin has to fix his mistake and measure the 8 foot wall side of the off grid house all over again. Lil is weary too, but thankfully she is not at all busy with being pregnant, homeschooling four children, shooting and editing video, managing the homestead, cooking meals and cleaning, so she can afford to simply laze around all day while Justin works.

Hey sister and brother, my grand dad always said, if you don't make mistakes then you're not doing anything. You can always work through them. Keep hydrated and be careful. Your brother in Ocala,Fl. God bless your family and keep your family safe.

Seeing those ceiling joists in makes me think add a plywood floor a 3 ft. knee wall and roof and put a couple big bedrooms upstairs for some bunkbeds in each with room for closets and desks
@DIY_or_DIE

Yes, that would be amazing, but at this point we just need to get this roof on and move on. Once we are living in the house we will look at a two story addition.

I've been waiting for days for this video. :) Good work. The fans and misters are smart. I'd suggest measuring out a jig and add a stop block to the circular saw as well as a table behind for the material. That way you can cut everything without having to stop and measure each cut. Also, if you stage the rafters up through the high ceiling area you can then move them down to the lower area without having to pick your way through all of the walls. I can't wait to see more progress and the little helpers are hilarious!

Thanks for joining us for this week's update! The fans have been a life saver, along with LMNT 😄 good tip for the rafters, they are going to be a challenge to get up there!
@chrishechtl8330
@chrishechtl8330 Месяц назад
@@DIY_or_DIE Yeah, good luck with that! As I said in the previous video, you may want to off load them from the tractor direct into the house and not use the stairs. Just line the tractor up so they are level with a door or window and unload them. If your tractor had a bit higher reach you might be able to get them right onto the ceiling joists that are already up. Are you using the boards with bad warp/crown for blocking or returning them to the store? Love seeing the kids building too, that brings back memories!
@DIY_or_DIE
@DIY_or_DIE Месяц назад
Don't worry, we will be using tractor for the rafters and roofing! We are using the warped ones for blocking. I try to keep our orders pretty close to what we actually need plus a small buffer for scrap or warped boards. We've had pretty good luck with getting good lumber, so we don't end up getting too much scrap. The kids usually take whatever scraps we do have and use them for their creative building projects 😄

14:49 Perhaps a framer would know fer sure, should the ceiling joist line up vertically with a stud below (*they should stack, aka stacking)? Obviously It's not possible for every joist. Albeit, if you stack the joist to a stud below the roof truss on the same top plate would end up 1½- inch offset to the same stud. (Thanks for reading, lol.) Incredible progress, btw, with you folks working regular jobs.
@DIY_or_DIE
@DIY_or_DIE Месяц назад
Hey there, thanks for taking time to ask the question! Since we have a double top plate, the rafters do not need to stack directly over a stud. It is required if there is only a single top plate, though.

Coverage on your ears, neck, and nose are sorely forgotten. While top of head is first and most important when it comes to skin cancer problems later on in your late 50s, don't listen to others when it comes to your health. I had serious skin cancer and it's no joke. The doctors said to me that I must have been outside a lot without sunscreen when I was younger.

I love y'all and your Channel. But dang, the way you guys are building this house is so financially wrong. I understand building something to last, but you've over-engeneered this thing to the heavens. You could be building this house for THOUSANDS less than what you're doing. I mean from the foundation right up to now. Don't get me wrong, y'all are doing amazing things and this house will be amazing, but man,....so much money could have been saved.
@DIY_or_DIE
@DIY_or_DIE Месяц назад
Thanks for joining us on this week's update! Yes, we are intentionally building above the minimum code standards in many cases, for good reasons! Since we are doing all the work ourselves, we are actually saving tens of thousands, if not hundreds...maybe we will do videos about material cost in the future, but surprisingly, I do not think the additional cost for material upgrades were much more costly than going with the minimum code standards... We know of people who have had issues with undersized roof framing and fixing any issues down the road will cost tens, or even up to hundreds of thousands, depending on the house. Also, we want this house to be around for generations, and our building inspector agrees it will be 😄 At the end of the day, we are doing what we think is best for our family. I'd rather pay a bit more up front to prevent issues down the road which could be much more costly 🤷‍♂️
