once installed in my caravan, what sort of "radial" distance coverage should I expect around my van, given that once I wind the stabilisers down the internal antenna would be literally inside a Faradays cage?
In my experience it’s all about the Ariel..If you use the best Ariel and a phone cradle you can save $1000 bucks ..To me it looks like the Ci-fi box thingy just lets you use the phone outside a cradle and doesn’t do much else..and doesn’t give any extra phone coverage outside of what an Ariel and cradle will do..But research it for yourself I may be wrong..
I used a cradle and external areal many years ago when you could place your phone in the cradle. I don't know of any cradles for a smart phone. I have seen the areal plug on a Samsung Galaxy s5 and older versions. After that phone, they were built as sealed units with no access to the areal. This is the only option so far that I know of.
Absolutely having a good antenna is very important. The cradle is not very good for most customers as they do not want to have their phone in the cradle the whole time when using for convenience. The cradle only works via induction and you lose up to 50% of the signal so if the signal is weak this is not an option either. Cradle can be sufficient depending on the application and once again if you do not mind having it in the cradle to make and receive calls. We are a major distributor of the samsung and iphone cradles but generally speaking they are not always ideal. You leave any outback town in Australia and you will have no signal and dont even work in alot of town. So if u break down or and emergency you are Finnish and yet they are selling all these new phones and do not work cos of the poor signal in Australia absolutely pathetic
I drove from Perth to Kalbarri and had signal the whole way literally with Celfi and streamed spotify music the whole way. Without celfi you get coverage about half the area. Also I was free camping at Cliff Heads, south of Dongara on the beach. There was no signal at all. As soon as I turned the vehicle on with Celfi I had signal.

So phone companies should spend millions installing cells ALL over the country just in case you break down Brad....yeah....great idea.....get on and organise that mate, ring your local member....
