Graeme O'Neil takes a look at the celebrity reaction to Maya Rudolph's "Mother" song that she performed during her opening monologue as she hosted the Mothers' Day episode for "Saturday Night Live".
Maya, you did your mom Minnie Ripperton proud. I'm a big fan of you both. May she rest in Paradise forevermore. I loved it. It really did make me 😂🤣😂🤣!!!! Very funny. Well done. The breakdown helps it all make sense. 😁😆😘👍🏼👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
I can only assume that you are not aware of a few references you left out. This song is a spin on Ru Paul's Song "Call Me Mother", also the line "giving gorgeous serving pretty , they did it live from new york city" is from Aquaria on the "American" remix "turning looks, stunting pretty, im the bitch from new york city"
That opening blew me away. I’ve been watching SNL since Season 1, Episode 1 and have become so frustrated with flash in the pan hosts, musical guests I’ve never heard of and screaming girls in the audience, so when you get a show with a pro like Rudolph and an all-adult, talented cast it’s such a pleasure.
The performance in the beginning is giving Beyoncé Renaissance concert visuals on the screen behind Maya and the dancers are giving Madonna Vogue MTV performance in the Marie Antoinette period costumes. The j10’s are representing the judging of Voguing dances in Ballroom culture started by Queer POC.
Loved this sketch but most of the original sources from the references (mother, gagged, 10s, 10s, 10s, body-ody-ody, etc) come from LGBTQ+ community spaces, like drag and ballroom scenes.
She was giving her spin on Beyonce's Renaissance Tour which featured every aspect of that, including the fan at the end which was a huge part of The Renaissance Tour. ;)
I am always floored by the new information I learn from the internet everyday. I was today's years old when I found out that Julia Louis-Dreyfus is an SNL alum : I only knew her from Seinfeld!!! I also can't remember if I ever knew that Matt Boomer was gay or I knew and forgot : I had to go and find out when he was refereed to in this video as being gay.
@@todddepue681 So if it's "all of the above" then why are you responding to me, specifically?? ;) I merely pointed out that it was an OBVIOUS Shot-out to Beyonce's Renaissance Tour.... which happened to include Beyonce's Vogue Remix paying homage to Black women. So what's your point? I didn't lie. ;)
I THINK YOU FORGOT TO MENTION OR MAYBE PERHAPS U ARE UNAWARE THAT THIS WAS ALSO(ADDING TO THE OTHER POINTS U MADE)A CLEAR TRIBUTE & ESSENCE OF MAYA'S PERFORMANCE, WHICH IS A FUNNY & CUTE TAKE ON MADONNA'S MUSIC VIDEO & SONG, VOGUE😂🤣🤣😂! YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW OR U MAY HAVE FORGOTTEN THAT MAYA'S SNL MOTHER'S DAY PERFOMANCE IS ALSO A HOMAGE TO MADONNA'S 1990 HIT, VOGUE😉!!!
Vogue dancing pre-dates Madonna. I'm not sure if you were aware of that or not. Maya actually gave tribute to the Houses of LaBeija & Ninja in this performance, as well. If anything, Maya sends more of a shout out to Todrick Hall & RuPaul than Madonna on this one.
@jinakaye Perhaps you're not comprehending what I said, Dear. I did not say who started voguing or vogue dancing. I am well aware of who LaBeija & Ninja are. Please check the facts & do your research 1st before you correct someone. I think it is safe to assume that judging by your response, you have not watched Madonna's VOGUE music video. I simply stated that the video/song in Maya's SNL performance was a tribute to Madonna's VOGUE video/song because of the identical beats and also because of the clear similarities of the dancers' outfits and dance moves which is clearly vogueing. Maya's rap throughout the performance was also an identical part of Madonna's rap at the end of Madonna's VOGUE song. The only difference between both songs are the words. And let's be clear, by the time Todrick was born in 1985, MADONNA had already had her 1st big hit in 1983 called Holiday. And also, by the time RuPaul 1st came on the scene with SUPERMODEL in 1993, Madonna already had almost 50 hits starting in 1982 to 1993! I love all three entertainers, Madonna, RuPaul & Toderick! They all contributed an important part of art in our world, whether it's music, dancing, modeling, etc...,! Also, I will reiterate, I never said Madonna created vogue dancing, which is why you thought you were informing me of something you thought I did not know anything about. And because you assumed that you needed to inform me that voguing pre-dates Madonna, you failed to realize that your assumption was incorrect. And no Dear, Madonna did not create or invent VOGUE Dancing, she just made VOGUE DANCING (an underground dance)A GLOBAL SENSATION WITH HER BIG HIT SONG & MUSIC VIDEO, VOGUE!
