Graeme O'Neil takes a look at how some celebrities reacted to Taylor Swift's "Midnights" album on release day, including Selena Gomez, Ed Sheeran, Este Haim, Nicki Minaj, Rachel Zegler, Maisie Peters, and Reese Witherspoon.
From what I’ve seen, everyone has a different favorite song on this album, and that’s how you know it’s good. There isn’t one track that we all agree is the best, and this applies to almost every album she has put out. Some of the songs have taken me a few listens, but the more I do, the more I love the whole thing. Bravo Taylor!
Right! On first listen "Anti-hero" was my favourite then today I just can't stop playing " Question....? " I'm pretty sure my favourite on the album is gonna change again
This!! I think you can easily say this for all her albums. And yes, your favorites can change from day to day, month to month, even year to year. Just recently found myself listening to Last Kiss and Long Story Short on repeat, two songs I liked, but weren't exactly my faves. It can really depend on the circumstances or your mood. Right now for Midnights it's Lavender Haze, YOYOK, SOTB, Labyrinth, and Karma. But for sure this is gonna change. 😻
@@rmsc9127 yes! I always find myself going down memory lane with her stuff, and I’ll fall in love with songs all over again, or for the first time of I didn’t care for them previously. Right now for me, it’s Labyrinth, Snow on the Beach, Lavender Haze, Anti-Hero, Karma, and YOYOK. Lol, I know, like half the album 😉. Of her 3 am tracks…love Great War, Dear Reader, and Would’ve, Should’ve, Could’ve. These will probably change also. It’s hard not to when you just immerse yourself in her albums!
@@homeboy8389 mainstream music has been mediocre for a long time. But in every generation, there is at least one exception. For example, I mostly listen to metal and hard rock but I gotta give it to TS that she is a very talented songwriter. I like her country stuff more but even most of her pop songs are good lyrically!
13 songs on the standard version. Weaving 13 midnights but sampling her own music in either cadence, prose, or musicality was missed by many in first pass. Lavender Haze gives us a massive hint in the first few seconds when she samples the Sax from False God. Each song woven together with her discography in this manner like an invisible string pulling us through the journey of her life. Each song contains peeks and hints as what era, or midnight, or muse she was speaking about. The level of genius has yet to be discovered.
I agree with your opinions on the songs. I feel the same way about all of her albums. There are always a few songs that just seem to drag the quality of the whole album down a little. It’s always disappointing but at least the good songs are really good.
Don't put conclusion too fast for every Taylor Swift album. We all to need to listen to it at least a week to finally see that each album is just a perfect masterpiece, titled perfectly, written carefully, crafted beautifully and break you through ultimately.
I agree. I jumped to conclusions the first listen. Now after listening to the whole album probably 8 more times, I understand every song and the beat just gets me
Yeah Mastermind, Labyrinth, Karma, Bejeweled, Midnight Rain, Question...?, Vigilante Shit, The Great Was, Bigger Than The Whole Sky and Dear Reader really has to grow on you first
@@sofv1ly Yeah but that's more due to the marketing and anticipation then the album itself. She did not do something new or different like un the past. This is a good album but definitely not her best ! And you should calm down a bit, you'll get an ulcer.
@@Fouloul. I'm sorry but that's 100% ur opinion. I'm glad u think its a good album, its fine if u don't think its her best. But even if it doesn't have the folkmore level lyricism its still a fucking great lyrically written album if u look behind and research the meanings of some of the phrases and sentences. It wasn't just the marketing and the good roll out, its because taylor swift is just one of the greatest songwriters and music artists of the century, that IS a fact. She knows just how to promote her music/work, she knows her own fanbase very well, and knows how to interact with them. And listen, I'm not telling u to calm down and stop being excited about something u love/ur passionate about. So don't tell me how much i should be excited for things. I am not ashamed of being a die-hard taylor swift fan. And i can still definitely be critical of taylor's music and lyrics, and not always see her as some perfect goddess because she's not, no one's perfect. There's a reason why she broke countless records in the past few days, not just because of great promotion, but because she's a lyrical and musical genius.
@@Fouloul. it’s all about marketing but she’s gained so many more fans from folklore and evermore, since 1989/reputation eras. She’s intelligent. The way to get pre sale access to her tour tickets is to purchase the album physical copy. The anticipation for the album did great as well. She’s a marketing genius, ppl say lyrical genius, and killed records bc of it!
@@Fouloul. by the way, idk that persons response but you asked how come she’s making a change, it’s bc of her now holding various records in music with only more to break in the days, weeks, months to come with this album. It’s competition & at this point, she’ll be as memorable as any other artist who’s passed on.
I think this is one of her best albums yet! But then again, not one of her albums has ever disappointed me. I’ve been listening to her since I was 7 years old and I have loved growing up with her!❤️❤️❤️
@@homeboy8389 huh? That doesn’t even make sense but ok😂 if that’s supposed to be a hate comment, you did a bad job of it because Santa Clause brings joy to people and who wouldn’t want happiness in their life? I guess you🤷♀️🤷♀️
@@homeboy8389 Umm.. I know elderly people who listen to Taylor. She's a record-breaking and truly iconic artist. And she's 32, herself. Nothing to be ashamed about, my friend. And for an artist who's matured their sound and lyrical content, there are many songs on Midnights that I don't think I'd get away with showing to younger children lol
@@augustnvirgo2728 Not really Folklore or evermore in my opinion, Taylor has used far more power in her lyrics on the folklore and evermore albums compared midnight's
Midnights is not my favorite TS album but I can't deny that it's good. At first listen, I find it bland and the only song I loved at first hear was Anti-Hero. Then a day passed and all songs turned out pretty good. Really the kind of songs you'd listen in the middle of the night
I kinda feel the same. Unlike other albums, this one is a bit hard to grasp just from the first listen. I needed at least 3-4 listen to finally enjoying the album
No offence but you guys are so funny. Midnights of course does not have the same level of songwriting prawness as folkmore cos guess why? you cant write "While I bathe in cliffside pools with my calamitous love and insurmountable grief" over a twerkable beat for a POP record. Funny thing is, if you really READ and LISTEN carefully, midnights lyrics were actually FOLKLORE coded, especially the 3 am tracks. People hear a synth and all of a sudden they forget how to read. Give it a time. Great record always takes time. You are probably one of the people who said folklore is boring the first time it dropped in 2020.
Midnights is my favorite Taylor album yet. It’s Taylor’s most adult pop album so far, and I really resonate with the sounds and themes. Great late night chill-out music. A combo of Folklore and 1989 was exactly what I was thinking.
We swifties, did it again. 😭Cause our queen Taylor deserves only the best. Let's keep streaming it. MIDNIGHTS is a real gem. Vibey, nostalgic, introspective. What an experience to hear the entire album including the 3 am edition. SHE. NEVER. DISAPPOINTS.
Taylor has yet again delivered excellent with midnight. This album is a masterpiece in a way which is so unique, and stunning! It cannot be compares to her previous pure pop albums like 1989, reputation ,or lover, it is an independent entiry which has certified bops. Not everyone can pull off amazing albums back to back 15 years into their career, and 9 albums later! She is literally shattering all records on every platform ever, I'm so proud of her 👸🏼❤.
As many Swifties will tell you, don’t set your binge songs or skip songs in stone for a good while. Many of our skip songs end up being favorites (or at least further up the list) and many of our favorites have some hard competition after we listen to the albums 313 times. (I don’t know why this is…?) It will be interesting to see if Taylor’s new listeners (there are MANY since Midnights dropped!) will find they feel the same way.
I am a new listener and it’s exactly like you said. I was about to comment this but saw your comment first. Me and my cishet man fiancée just listen on repeat 😂 and our favorites changed already. Also, now we know all about her and her exes, songs, interviews, cats, humor 😂 midnights is the first TS vinyl i bought, let’s see what happens 😅
FR lemme tell you i did not like lavender haze or paris or even karma the first time but now I can't STOP playing them they become my #1s so fast haha. and songs I immediately loved at first like maroon or question, I don't listen to as often but still love
I honestly think that this is the album that Taylor felt 100% comfortable and confident releasing. Ibalso think it’s been divisive in the song selections that people like. I have heard so many variations of people’s favorites. I also think the more listens, the more that changes. She’s a genius. I’m a Stan. But this album is a masterpiece by a Mastermind
I FRIGGEN LOVE ANTI HERO!!! You’re on your own kid hits so hard! Mastermind is so good sonically!! OK BUT SNOW ON THE BEACH NEEDS MORE LANA DEL REY PLS!! HER VOICE SUITS THE SONG SO WELL AND SHE GOT SNUBBED!!
I agree, not her best work but some of the songs will really be great for a teenage romance movie or TV series! It’s hard because Jack Antonoff was on every song. Maybe Taylor could spread her wings a little more and dive into some different productions of music with different producers for her next album. It felt like they went with the folklore/evermore trend as they were both 100% out of this world albums but added a little bit more pop in some songs. Kinda was hoping for more upbeat pop/ reputation/red/1989 beats tho. All in all I still love it! And stayed up till 3am here in Australia to memorise the lyrics to sing to my nephew the next morning for his 1st birthday because he needs to know the legend that is Taylor Swift! ❤
@@tzking7640 for real though! I just skimmed through the first time and after lavander haze I was like… okay :/ and then I listened again and again with headphones and there’s not one I don’t love love love lol
It's not my most fave album from her, but still think it's good! I loved only a few songs from the get-go, though the others I learned to appreciate after hearing some more
i remember when i first listened to this i only liked a couple of songs. now that i’ve listened to it it think 5 or 6 times now i have a certain respect for all of them and they have really grown on me. its also a big change from folklore/evermore which was very grounded and quiet to midnights which was very much 1989 and loud.
i think tay decided to bring all her albums (from 1989 to the red re-recording) and put them together into one big masterpiece. I didn’t go to stream the album at midnight, I listened the the radio because it was going to play the whole album back to back with no ads! also shoutout to the haim sisters, they sound like the best people ever.
Despite the massive success, I would say midnights is far from being her best album. It's mid tear at best in her discography. I don't hate it, but I think the hype is purely because it's Taylor, not because the album is good. Ps :love Taylor, especially love folklore /evermore era. And I'm totally on board with the idea of it going down in the second half. And I didn't like the sweet nothing. Midnight rain is nice though
People will always compare...why dont u even enjoy it...when 1989 was out. People were like she was better at country...and when rep came out...people were like so dark...DONT U PEOPLE EVEN KNOW THE WORD just ENJOY!
@@heenabaharmir18 uh I'm sorry I didn't know I wasn't allowed to have an opinion if I don't like it. I'm really sorry. If I said 'its her best album yet wow amazingg Taylor is the best she is a godess, I love it more than 1989 then You wouldn't have said to' Not compare'. Hypocrite. This is my opinion and in case you didn't know people are allowed to have that. Did I make fun of her, did I say mean things, did I curse? No, all I did was to have an opinion and some crazy swiftie fan comes and critisises me for having it You people are the reason Taylor get so much hate. I love her I really do, I think she is amazing but right now I'm really annoyed at her because of you
@@heenabaharmir18 I'm saying again... I don't have a right to Compare two albums of an artist I like, so... I don't have a right to have an opinion? If you enjoy it just enjoy it why do you have to criticise my opinion? If I don't like it, it means I don't like it. I'm saying it again I think it is her second to worst album, after her debut. Oh you didn't understand? I think 1989 was BETTER than this. Oh by the way folklore was better than the 1989. Oh I'm sorry I don't have a right to do that.. By the way, if you have a favorite song you shouldn't. Because that would mean you like that song better than the rest, and it would be a crime because that means you have an opinion. Idiot
The Travelling Wilburys were a British American all male Super group consisting of Bob Dylan George Harrison Jeff Lynne Roy Orbison and Tom Petty. Its 2022 and we need an all female Super group of Pop Divas. Taylor Swift Lana Del Rey, Lorde & HAIM all together will be remarkable
I'm in love with this album. And I have more favorites towards the latter half of the album's 13 songs (the extra 7 are a whole other beast). But it also depends for me what I can connect to in my life. They're all bops. I think her albums, especially nowadays, really speak to Swifties- who know her, the history, the little nuances and bits that may not stand out to casual listeners. Past the Easter eggs, the diary entries we can decode in her words. It's amazing how much this album makes sense, especially to us. And you gotta go down the rabbit hole for the full picture 🤭
I feel like MIDNIGHTS shifted people's opinion on music. You see, her marketing techniques are what that makes Midnights an iconic release. I won't hesitate to say that Midnights is by far her best album. It's skipless..tho some songs are a bit weaker as compared to other, for example, Question...? but the whole album is a masterpiece.
I loved every track on the original 13. The bonus tracks were great but they touch on things that make me emotional in a bad way, much like I don't throw in Ronan or Soon you'll get better on purpose to avoid a mood crash. Amazing album, love the vibes.
Unpopular opinion, but I really hate Jack Antonoff's production and his usual reliance on samples, electronic beats, flat synth sounds, and the whole "this was recorded in my bedroom on a PC" vibe. The joy about Red's re-release and Aaron Dessner working on Folklore and Evermore is that we occasionally (not always) got to hear real musical intruments being played by actual humans and the "space" and depth that gives a song. It''s why so many of Taylor's songs sound better live with actual musicians playing. Electronic music can be great, but I'm soooo over Mr Antonoff's sound.
I really feel like 3am bonus tracks better than original album, they have more versatility and experimental sounds. My favs bigger than whole sky(country sound) and high infedility(love to aaron dessner). For me original album fun but kinda feels like trying hard radio friendly My fav from original album sweet nothin P.s. Just some of my opinions.
I personally I love Midnight rain and how her vocals are pitched down in it, and Vigilante Shit definitely feels much more from Rep era. Bejeweled was quite good but Mastermind ✨
Never liked her music much…until Folklore and now I am fan of her work. The music is not revolutionary, but the topics are relatable and she is so vulnerable sharing her struggles. Listening to her album makes me happy. Thank you Taylor ❤
I can only think by your reaction, you didn’t listen to the lyrics, understand the album concept, or appreciate her place in pop history. Millions of fans can’t be wrong 🤷🏻♀️A+
It’s my favorite album 🎉 so much emotion and imagery, sad but happy, makes me ready to live life after listening, sounds absolutely beautiful and ethereal. So raw and real. My favorite album!!! My old fav was speak now lol.
The incredible commercial performance of Midnights already, shows that for Taylor, the traditional album rollout sells more than dropping surprise albums out of nowhere. Midnights is doing much better than surprise albums Folklore and Evermore did in their early days despite not having any obvious radio hits. Apart from being great album, a lot of Midnights' early success has to be to do with the more traditional buildup Taylor did to drum up anticipation in the weeks leading up to the albums release.
And i would ad the sharp writting of folklore and evermore. I dont know how to describe it because i dont know the perfect word (i am french) but i can say that her writting style is really clear and visual. It just refreshing and perfect
When you factor in all 21 tracks, and the 2 remixes I grade this album a total A++ for its production, lyrics, and concept! #midnights.become.my.afternoons! 🌙
Coming from a 54 year old fan from Denmark who grew up with European synth music I actually believe this is Taylors best album so far. Gone are the teenage tendencies from other albums - this is a well coordinated sound and atmosphere - perfect
Absolutely LOVE this album. She described it as “13 sleepless nights throughout her life” and i totally felt that. I have to disagree with you on that block starting with midnight rain. That track might be my favorite as of now. I think it’s the most experimental with the strip down chorus and I’m here for it. I also love the vibe of vigilante and bejeweled is a total nod to her girlie girl swiftly fans. She said as much describing the video on Jimmy Fallon. It’s definitely the track that reminds me how fun it is to be a girl so I love it. also would’ve, could’ve, should’ve is the most heart breaking song I’ve heard in a long time if not ever. Like woah.
I disagree and think that all of the tracks have there own non toppable charm. Taylor has done it once again, and I'm loving every momoent. Every person has their own unique music niche, and this album has showcased mostly all!❤🌹🌺🌸 I loved hearing what u had to say though, ty!
I love your work and presentation. This was my first time watching any video on your channel. Free of toxicity , unnecessary suspence .. Pure facts delivered with so much relevant emotions...
I agree that MidNights Album was a B. Because 1989, Reputation, Lover was an A. She had great ones that shouldve been kept to release as Single now, Many Songs couldve been Spectacular Single Now like Cruel Summer. 😘
This is a 10/10 album! I don't think it dips. In fact I think it continues to give us heartbreaking songs or BOPS!!!!! I love all the songs!!!!! She doesn't disappoint at all!!!!!
Idol Taylor very sorry if that the situation I think someday I'm exit😥😥😥😥😥 cuz I hate too Kanye and Kanye was fame someday than you it's because of you 😥😥😥😥😥 idol Taylor are you okay😥😥😥😥😥 I hate Kanye even do I'm your fan😥😥😥😥😥cuz I hurt when he did this with you 😥😥😥 you know 😥😥😥 but why I hear his name in your song😥😥😥 I think it's better that he did everything bad by you even do you put to shame in media😥😥😥😥😥? Idol Taylor are okay😭😭😭😭😭
It honestly concerns me that more people aren’t talking about this. The hypocrisy of her calling out Ginny and Georgia for misogyny only to be completely silent as her fandom descended on the actress with racist hate was just…unreal. So was the way she went after that small blogger in 2017 with a cease and desist simply for calling on her to denounce white supremacy (rather than just simply denounce it or go after the Daily Stormer, a right wing white supremacist publication that claimed she was “one of them”). She did eventually denounce it 3 years later when Black Lives Matter caught on more, but there’s such a thing as embracing something only because it’s popular. Just recently she associated with or dated Matty Healy, who is a known racist and bigot. It’s more than just one isolated incident. There's a pattern with her. I really wish people would stop praising her feminism or anti-racism at all. Doing so puts the bar dangerously low. She may be smashing records, but she has not shown herself to be a person with integrity.
hehe nooo. It's a 100% A++++++. My fav is anti hero, bejewelled, lavender haze, mastermind, vigilante shit all at the same level. And then also midnight rain and your on your own kid. Followed very closely by karma. question, karma and maroon are kinda tied. they have some nice parts but didn't stay with me. then sweet nothings. And then coming in at the bottom is labyrinth and snow on the beach which both didn't really do anything for me. Though snow on the beach's chorus is slowly catching on. Labyrinth has to be my least fav as of now. Also not a fan of the F word in the songs. Feel like it took away from the song. but overall, except for the last 2 i mentioned which i keep skipping, i have been streaming this on repeat. i can't stop listening. Help! :)
I've listened to the whole thing.....can't relate. Don't care for Tay....never have. Overrated and pompous, with relationship issues, so it's like, whatever. I mean, if you're 14 then go nuts, but there is far better music out there, you just have to dig into the deep cellars of spotify
After the 1st listen, I only liked 3-4 songs, and I thought the whole album was just mediocre. However, after the 3rd listen, I can't decide which song is my favorite, they're all so unique in their own way and I vibe with each of them. xD
I love the album but the sound is so similar to Rep and Lover. Was hoping for something different. I agree with you. It’s end great but I feel like Taylor is capable of much more. I love Midnight Rain, Karma, Mastermind, Anti Hero.
I don't even know who this pink shirt man is but he is a definite fool... They are the shade people whom we all should avoid... They are the reasons of depression and downfall of any great artists... I repeat... ARTISTS
Your thoughts echo my initial take, but the latter half REALLY grows in prominence and quality as you continue to listen. Lots of them turn out to be low-key BANGERS.
3:47 - 3:55. Disagree wholeheartedly. It might be one her strongest first singles from an album actually. LWYMMD, Me!, Shake It Off are all AWFUL songs, and WANEGBT is average at best, so it’s not a high bar to clear.
I listened maybe six songs. But it's not my cup of tea. Definitely lam not really interested in her stuff. I just loved two of her songs. Shake it off and Look what you did me.
Midnights was amazing for me, the 3am version is even more amazing, but evermore and folklore was just too good so it's a bit underwhelming. I still enjoy it greatly tho, esp the 3am version
You need to listen to the second half of the album again. You need to read the lyrics while listening to it this time. You have a very superficial understanding of the album.
Midnight is good but I love Evermore and Folklore better... I hope I'll grow to love it more just like I'm starting to love her two previous albums even more now.
