The US was mercilessly wracked by Bushwhacked Fever, then Macarena Fever, then Spice Fever. It's a miracle anyone survived to repopulate.

And in my youth, I survived an epidemic of Saturday Night Fever, which itself was a variant of boogie fever. The horror faded into memory after a few years, and America let its guard down, and then just like that-- Pac Man Fever. Hospital corridors rang with the sound of the characteristic cough: "wakka wakka wakka wakka"

Someone needs to add this trivia to iMDB: "The movie was originally named The Tenderfoot, but was later changed because the studio didn't like the idea of marketing it as an epidemic of Tenderfoot Fever, which sounds like it could be an actual medical condition possibly related to trenchfoot."

This is so much less expensive than therapy: my greatest memory of this movie is...believing "Bushwhacked Fever" was genuinely a trend sweeping the nation, renting the movie from Blockbuster, and trying to talk to LITERALLY ANYONE about it at school the next day. Turns out: I was Patient 0...and also Patient 1 and only. The part at the end where the kid INEXPLICABLY and hilariously trips and soars over the waterfall DID genuinely terrify me as well.

In absolute fairness, every film Daniel Stern starred in after Home Alone 1 and 2 could be pitched as a spinoff. His character from the City Slickers films was almost like 'Marv rehabilitated'. The horror movie C.H.U.D could almost be a prequel in Marv's troubled life before hooking up with his older brother to form the Wet Bandits.

The key difference is that in Home Alone, Marv is a bad man getting hurt, and thus it serves justice, but when you make him a well meaning idiot and hurt him to this extent, then the universe no longer seems just, but capricious, and overly cruel. Even children understand this powerful difference in the comedy. Same for Ed O' Neil in Dutch. When awful stuff happens to him, we feel bad for the guy, he's doing his best in a hard situation there, but when it happens to Al Bundy we rejoice, for he is a man as odious as the way his world treats him, and so the universe feels just. What this movie makes me think of is Allison's review of The Stupids, from forever ago, and I'm thinking that movie had more creative ways of employing its idiocy. There was a kind of insane anti logic to it, some kind of thought went into it at some point to how those people interpreted their world incorrectly, but this is just endless slapstick, and an excellent example of diminishing returns in action.
@Blisterdude123
@Blisterdude123 10 месяцев назад
I do think it's worth pointing out, on the topic of Al Bundy, that we also rejoice his small, microscopic victories. Because as odious as he is, he's a deeply human 'everyman' in a lot of ways, and it makes it as easy to like him and laugh with him as it is to laugh at him. He's 'not' just a cardboard cutout.

Hell, I won't lie, even in Home Alone there was a point where I started to feel bad for the bandits, so torturing an innocent guy can really make a movie tough to enjoy, IMO.

My late mother loved Daniel Stern in Home Alone, so even though this movie is probably terrible, I'm pretty sure she would have enjoyed it just for him. I will also say, as a huge Anthony Heald fan thanks to his time on Boston Public, he definitely deserved better than this! :D Anyways, thanks for this hilarious vid, and I guess the only thing left to say is.....Tenderfoot!

I remember the term "tenderfoot" from the Marx Brothers movie Go West, set in the wild west, where it seemed to be a term for soft city-slickers - presumably, their feet are tender because they haven't been hardened by working in the elements. I dunno how much you hear the word these days, though, so I understand why they nixed it as the title.

They didn't even need the crime plot, they could have just had it be about a terrible person accidently ending up in the woods with kids and he learns to be a good person along the way, ending with a heartfelt moment where he saves the kids from a rockslide or something. He could have been roped into being a bodyguard for the kids as mandatory public service, only for the troop leader to bail on them, leaving Max to guide the kids. Or maybe something happens to the troop leader, they get separated. This could have so easily been fixed with a good director. Stern really should have directed it himself, maybe cast Joe Pesci in the lead instead of himself. Or Macaulay Culkin.

A recent Rifftrax I bought had Daniel Stern playing a supporting role in a cheap 1980s Sampson and Delilah movie. It was so surreal and it felt kinda sad to see him play a serious role. That's what these over the top mugging 90s roles did- I kinda expected him to do something wacky but he's just a sidekick and foil for Sampson, he betrays him, get stabbed by Max Von Sydow, the end. It's more surreal than anything in Bushwhacked, which is even sadder.
