A tower built to watch turkeys sail to sea? Only in East Yorkshire.
If you listen to local tales of Carnaby Temple you will hear how this octagonal brick folly was built by in 1770 by Sir George Strickland, the 5th Baronet of Boynton, so that he could watch his turkeys grow and then leave on boats from Bridlington Bay.
This fanciful rumour is, at least in part, based on truth. Strickland’s forefathers are credited with introducing Turkeys to Britain and the land around Boynton Hall was forested in order to farm thousands of the birds. The Hall is situated on one of the highest parts of the Wolds and the new trees obscured the view to nearby Brid. So it would seem that Strickland may well have built the Temple to create a viewpoint over his land.
Whatever the reason, his folly was designed to mirror the Greek Temple of the Four Winds and has sadly been bricked up since WW2, when it was pressed into service as a military look-out post.
The Temple is to be found up Temple Lane off the Carnaby to Bridlington road. Be warned, however, it is mainly used as a farm track these days so the last part is best accessed on foot.
