Did you know that John Wayne and Frank Sinatra almost got into a fight over the latter figure hiring a blacklisted Communist director and that Clark Gable refused to star in John Wayne’s directorial debut because he didn’t think the Western legend was going to be a good filmmaker? John Wayne was a movie star whose conservative politics, as well as his penchant for speaking his mind, caught the ire of many of his peers. There were several stars that couldn’t stand John, and we’ll be taking a look at some of them in this video! While plenty of John’s peers couldn’t stand him, the ones who hated him the most weren’t afraid to talk about it.

Wayne was a devout Patriot, and a product of that era of Political Climate.. Sinatra was a die hard Liberal, and friend of Mob Bosses across the US. Wayne held to his principles, not out of malice, but simply he loved this Country, and didnt see himself as being anything but that.. Wayne supported our Armed Forces, and believed in what the US was doing.. was he RIGHT in all of this > ? no.. and Lennons criticism of Wayne was simply Lennon being Lennon. he isnt the best role model to be sure, great artist, absolutely, but, not exactly a pillar of society either. I love Waynes movies, and believe he simply did what he thought was best, to support the US, its Armed Forces, and its leaders.. Hollywood leaned hard left then, it leans much harder left now.. I still applaud Waynes life and films.. its easy to cast aspersions on people long gone, from a time when things had not yet changed perceptions of people as they have now, 50-60 yrs later.

If I like someone's movies I don't really want to know anything about them personally. Most of them will disappoint you. I loved Jerry Lewis comedies but I can't even watch them now because of what was revealed about him. He was a terrible man. I think most celebrities were and are failures as people.

That's true yes, but I'm not talking personal lives in my dislike of John Wayne he chose to make it public, esspecially when he had to be restrained by 4 plus security when he tried to physically abuse Sacheen Littlefeather at the 1973 academy awards,this was not a one of. My comments of him being a state made star where true he was asked probably even paid to spy on artists he worked with. He was just a turkey hateful man. Most artists not celebrities, big difference tend to have sensible politics weather they lean left or right and most high level artists would lean left that is just statistically correct. Then you get Muppets like Wayne and Hestern hateful people who let the side down. The one that supprised me recently was not for necessarily for there political lean(was still a surprise) but his active support of Trump means i cant watch Frasier any more with out feeling sick 🤢.......

So let me get this right - Katharine Hepburn and Frank Sinatra both had problems with Wayne over politics in the 1950s, but came to mutual respect and affection later. Spike Lee and John Lennon - who can barely have known the man - didn’t like what (little) they knew of him. And Clark Gable didn’t want to play Davy Crockett because it was Wayne’s directorial debut. Hardly “hated John Wayne” is it? And while Wayne might be controversial- surely no one disagrees he was a fine actor in his genre and willing to take on controversial roles - like Ethan Edwards in the Searchers.

People always hear what they wanna hear. John Wayne may have had haters, but I for one will always revere John Wayne. For his acting, and his strength of character. I understand that Robert Ryan (a staunch Democrat) and Duke had more than a few dust-ups over politics on the sets of the movies in which they were co-stars. Kirk Douglas was another co-star that didn't see eye to eye with him on political matters. Doubtful their differences resulted in "hate" in either case.

They didn't. Ryan was a very private and quiet man. Ernest Borgnine made a few movies with him and admired him but said he was tough to get to know. He was a big liberal and Wayne a big conservative. They may or may not have had an issue or two but they co-starred in 2 movies. Kirk Douglas and Wayne enjoyed a very friendly relationship but were not close friends. That said, Kirk did send a nice telegram to Wayne when he went back in the hospital around 1978 or so. They respected each other and did have very good chemistry in their 3 films.

Roscoe Brown said Wayne would talk to you about your differences, but he respected peoples opinions. Same with Rock Hudson, who thought Wayne was going to get him fired off the Undefeated. All Wayne did was ask him if he was a good chess player. Most say Wayne was just a figure head for the anti-communism movement in Hollywood…the real leader was Ward Bond.

@@FactsVerse Whether or not the alleged things that John Wayne may have said or not shouldn't minimize that type of Actor that he was. It take exception that many of his critics (notably Spike Lee) never met him. In regards to your question about the type of movies that I like, I very much love Sci-Fi and Docudramas. One of my favorite Docudramas is "The Winds of War" and "War and Remembrance." I also like the movie, "The Enemy Below."

Lee Marvin once told a story about him and the Duke drinking and arguing about how hard John could punch, they were in a hotel room during the filming of a movie and Lee said he went in the bathroom closed the door and stood in front of the door just inches away while John punched the the door! John put his fist through the door and when he opened the door Lee was on the floor out cold! The Rat Pack would have been minus 1 Rat!

For me the best western figure of all time was James Arness as Matt Dillon or Ward Bond on wagon train. Did anyone know in real life Ward Bond and John Wayne was hunting and Wayne accidentally shot bond in the butt with a shotgun he borrowed from bond. LOL. When Bond died he left the shotgun to Wayne.

Mr. Johnson for true heroes who also made movies I ask you to consider Jimmy Stewart and Audie Murphy. Stewart served during WWII in the Army Air Corps. Flying 20 combat missions over Germany. He served with distinction and received several medals. I don't feel the need to say anything about Murphy. Our country's most decorated soldier.

So he did his part as an actor entertaining the troops with movies, and live performances, visiting the wounded, and radio bits. He did his part and is a homefront hero.

Men who were too old to enlist or be drafted into military service did not need to ask for a 3A draft deferment. Because they were too old to enlist or be drafted. An interesting side note. At a later date Mr. Wayne was reclassified as 1A. Meaning he was fit for military service.

One more thing I forgot to mention, His football injury also kept him out of service. Another item, As the war progressed and men were getting less and less, they were lowing their standards too. Why he was classified as 1A with a major injury and was inactive reserve. They were pulling people out of prison filling the roles they needed for the war.

@@stevecampbell6294 It is speculated that John Wayne did not serve in World War II because he was classified as “3-A” when he did his part in registering with Selective Service. “3-A” is one of the classifications that allowed the registrant to defer service. Its official name is “Hardship Deferment.” It applies to registrants whose commitment to service can burden (cause hardship for) their families. John Wayne was considered one of these "3-A" registrants because he had a wife and 4 kids to provide for. "2-A” is another classification with grounds for deferment. Republic Pictures, when Wayne was eligible to enlist, filed a “2-A” deferment to keep him in their studio. After his “Stagecoach” role, Wayne was the only A-list actor at Republic Pictures. So, it was no surprise that they did not want to ‘“lose” him to the war. As an actor, Wayne qualified as a “2-A” registrant in a non-agricultural occupation. Displaced paperwork is another possible reason why John Wayne did not serve in World War II. It was believed that the required papers for his enlistment were processed but mistakenly sent to his ex-wife’s house and not his. Thus, he never knew about it. Some sources claimed that she neglected it, while some contended that she withheld it intentionally because she and the children were still relying on Wayne’s star power to live comfortably.

Actually did not like him as an actor and was not applying literary or artistic criticism but am critical about his attitudes on the subjects of his work which were appalling. ie Birth of a Nation so applauded and was shown in the Wilson White House. That movie was so disgustingly racist, would turn one's stomach. Not only said something about the film maker but also about Woodrow Wilson. (it was not a commentary on racism it was racist) Felt like the KKK made it and everybody cheered.

I have mixed feelings about John Wayne which I'll keep private. As for John Lennon, he was IMHO sadly mistaken. John Wayne was a chain smoker, a heavy drinker, and did not have the healthiest diet. Also in the film industry, you work sporadic and long hours which affects people differently. It has been suggested that when John Wayne was filming in the 1950s and 1960s that while on location in the Mountain West radiation from nuclear explosions may have harmed him.

It's known that John Wayne had Lung Cancer and was a heavy Smoker and when the Doctor told him he needed to have a part of his lung Removed and to stop Smoking or he'll probably die from the Lung Cancer, he didn't listen and kept Smoking cigarettes !!! So i seriously doubt it was from Radiation at a filming sight . Maybe if he listened to the Doctor's warnings he would have lived much longer. Sad,People got so addicted to Smoking Cigarettes and couldn't stop.

Wasn't a fan of his movies namely western but I still have much respect for the man. John Wayne did say stuff that would be pretty controversial these days. I don't think he was a racist. As you said he was a product of the times he grew up in. Problem today is that people like Spike Lee who bash John Wayne do so unfairly because the man is now dead and can't defend himself and Spike Lee likely never met John Wayne when he was aliive. Secondly we're currently living in a time where people look for things and words to get offended about.

The female role in the script her agent read was small, small enough that he didn't bother mentioning it to Hepburn. Ironically, the role was eventually expanded and offered to Geraldine Fitzgerald. I addition, I have never seen or read anything about Katharine Hepburn disliking John Wayne's behavior on the set of the movie they made together. Both actors objected to the directing and voiced their opinions loud and clear. Although I like the movie, I have to agree that the directing left it a flawed film. Wayne and Hepburn with their combined, maybe 100 years in the movie business were right.

Duke was an overall good man with good intentions, who was raised in a wholesome conservative midwest home with conservative ideals. He was in his prime in the 1930s and followed suit with the interests of our country at a time when international tensions were tight and Nazi Germany was spreading propaganda like a wildfire. If John Wayne had been born in the 50s, his rhetoric would have been a lot different. His messages to America had good intentions and his movies tell fun stories. I'm a centrist Democrat who leans very slightly left of moderate. I believe in a socially organized system of taking care of those less fortunate with foundations that provide aid as nothing more than a starter kit toward self sustained living. If they fumble and fall off track they get one more chance, after that, figure it out yourself. When it comes to race, I'm color blind. When it comes to social injustice and racial persecution, I am appalled. Grow up and learn acceptance. You would be amazed at who could become your best friend.

John Wayne was thrown from a horse when he was 17-18. This was during the Great Depression and his family could not afford to send him to a doctor. The local nursemaid helped set his leg, but it wasn’t perfect. It’s where he got his distinctive limp. He was too old and unable to pass the military physical. Wayne and Ford were life long friends, as were Wayne and Ret.General James Stewart, and several other Veteran Officers who wouldn't give the time of day to a draft dodger. I was a fan of John Wayne from a young age. But i realized he was a celebrated actor because he gradually became the roles he played. He wasn’t an especially skilled actor. Later i realized he was a bigoted, small minded, xenophobic, and stupidly worked to blacklist anyone who didn’t fit his view of patriotism. But perhaps he is best seen as a mirror of many of the people of his time. This video portrays the people who disliked JW in a superficial way. But I feel sorry he caught cancer and ironically got it from filming close to a nuclear test area from which half of the cast eventually got cancer. And he was perfect for the role in True Grit and deserved an Oscar for that.

I pretty much detest those who criticize John Wayne. John Wayne was and still is a GREAT person whom I totally respect and admire!!!!!!!

Wayne, who was called Duke, made some classic movies with John Ford and Howard Hawks and others. Ford's movies usually treated indians with respect. He was very aware of their tragic destiny. Wayne was a better actor than he was usually given credit for, but I don't think his views on politics, religion etc were worth bothering about one way or the other.

John Ford and Howard Hawks were great directors and also portrayed macho characters on screen; nothing wrong with that!

@@petergreen5337 In his westerns Ford was cocerned with historical destiny and he hd a tragic imagination. In movies such as Fort Apache and Cheyenne Autumn all his sympathy was with the native Americans.

Spike Lee hated Wayne for how the writers and directors portrayed the Native Americans. Wayne was just an actor. Except for Hepburn almost every director and actor has said Wayne was great with production people on set. He was probably angry because he was in pain from his cancer.

I for one don't give a hoot about the haters!! John Lennon sound like a moron! I know he has a "feminine side". I love the Duke!!

real men are not misogynists or people who claim special status to avoid going to WWII or have despicable views about other cultures - Native Americans are selfish cause they did not want to give up their land to the invaders, and portraying said cultures as savages, while the Native Americans were savagely slaughtered - don't call that a "real man".

I grew up watching Hollywood movies and many Westerns among them and some John Wayne flick. Also Kirk Douglas, Alan Ladd, Glenn Ford, Rock Hudson, Randolph Scott and everything would have been fine if it wasn't because at that time an Italian guy started making movies where we saw Cowboys and bandits compared to which US made cowboys looked like wussies. Just see these two subplots taken, by me, from real movies. In some traditional Western the hero is shot and he survives but he is badly wounded. Then every woman in the cast comes to nurse him back to health, they rally around the bedridden hero and bring him comfort, hot soup, bathing him, and so on. In a Leone flick in the same situation the badly wounded guy manages to go hide in an abandoned mine and there he tough if up, cure and nurse himself, like Rambo used to do, and then comes back to get his revenge. How could you not love this guy compared to the other one...?

I"ve always performed the thought experiment that if I had been predestined by God to come to this life and absolutely had go to Hollywood and follow a career in the movie industry, which would be one best fitted to my personality, tastes, skills, etc., and the answer that I had ready at hand was writer. Writing movie scripts would have been Heavens for me I thought. But now that you mention it....it would have been a living Hell. No artistic freedom at all, jus write what you are told to.

RO, Those type of Screenplays you describe from Sergio Leone and The Sanitized Westerns of Silent 😶 and Talkies were Stymied by The Will Hays & The The Old Studio System Codes just like Television 📺. @@robertc.johnson9614 Yeah, it is sad, very sad, how they stymied the creativity of all those good writers and filmmakers between 30s and 60s. Most films of the era look tainted to me now. Watching from a modern perspective many of those flicks look simply ridiculous, even the comedies were we see a married couple sleeping with pajamas and in separate beds..! Or even bathrooms without toilet bowls..!. These Hays people were really a curse on Hollywood, those closed minded Catholics forced artists to confine themselves inside the straight jackets of their own anachronic beliefs and visions. Like I say, it is ridiculous, all those cowboys so well groomed and those frontier ladies who seem to be just coming out of the best hairstylist and beauty shop of Santa Monica Boulevard. They even seem to have pretty good dental plans and medical insurance...!
