Celebrity cancelled my shore excursion in Airlie Beach, but that did not stop me from having a great time! I explore both Airlie Beach and Cairns, Australia during port stops there on my Celebrity Cruises voyage onboard Celebrity Edge.
Celebrity Edge was sailing an 11-day itinerary to the Great Barrier Reef. On this Celebrity Cruises journey I visit multiple locations in Australia, including Airlie Beach, Cairns, Port Douglas, Willis Island, Brisbane, and Sydney. Celebrity Edge is the fourth oldest cruise ship in the Celebrity Cruises fleet. Celebrity Edge will cruise a summer season in Australia before heading to Alaska to sail later in 2023, before ultimately returning for more Australia cruises.

I used to love living in Cairns. Those tropical downpours are really something this time of the year but kind of fun too. Hope you can come back again someday. It’s a beautiful part of Australia. We often holiday there during our winter months (Dry season locally).

Zach we were in Airlie Beach around the same time (although I didn’t see you) and I found it quite disappointing. Another great video from our cruise.

Zach, Glad you made the most out of the rainy situation. In the Celebrity Ascent last month our beach excursion in Nassau was canceled just 10 minutes in advance due to rain. Luckily it was early morning and the excursion team was able to find an alternative experience for us in the afternoon, which turned out even better (Bahamian culinary tour).

Too bad about the rain in Airlie Beach. When I was there that lagoon was so much fun to play in. The locals will pronounce it Cannes vs Cairns.

When my son and granddaughters docked at Arlie Beach earlier this month, they had a tender. Unfortunately they didn’t go early to get tender tickets and was finally able to tender 4 hours after docking, leaving less than 2 1/2 hours to explore. Lesson learned.

Last year we did the British Isles in May from Apex. Great trip. And yes, it rains. Oh well, we all just make the best of it. Because Edge class ships have a unique way of tendering off the ship, maybe do a minute or two on the process. For me, it was a much better experience.

We had the same problem Nov 2023 on Quantum (similar itinerary) - all our shore excursions were cancelled due to poor sea conditions - it was rough even at anchor! Welcome to Australia and yes everything here wants to kill/eat you! 🙂 lol

I am going on the same cruise in Oct. So fun to see where I will be going. I won't be in the Retreat, I will be in a solo cabin for 3 cruises and the Great Barrier Reef cruise I switched to an oceanview at the front of the ship and saved $2000 on that cruise. My New Zealand cruise was booked all included so I couldn't change that one and the transpacific I kind of wanted a balcony and for a solo traveler it was about the same for other cabins. Have fun...you may by home by now.

Zack, if you ever return to Australia and want to go in the water, you can get something called stinger suit. I imagine it’s more for scuba divers to protect them against the box jellyfish. I was watching another RU-vid couple, the channel name is living phase 2 and Mike is a big scuba diver. So Mike went to the great Barry reef and was wearing a stinger suit to protect him against the sting of jellyfish.

Tendering sounds exhausting! Port stays are short as it is, without having to spend four hours of waiting and riding to and from the ship.

Not sure if it’s still there but when I was in Cairns in January 2020, we stayed at the Hilton, right across from the Casino… on the top floor at the casino, was a “zoo” type place where you could pay to hold a Koala…. Other than scuba diving the Great Barrier Reef, that was the next best thing!!! Hope you had a blast!

Unfortunately Edge is too big to dock in Cairns cruise port which is why it has to tender 😢 we were on the Edge for the cruise after this one, we stayed in retreat too and it was fabulous. Shame about the weather for your port days, I live in between Cairns and zAirlie Beach and this summer has had a lot of days like that

Very safe to swim from June to October. Stingers need very warm water approx 27 Celsius to survive. The water is too cold for them outside of November to May but not too cold for us.

Zac you are visiting at the end of the rainy season, us Australians will go there from April till about October. It’s a wonderful place but I love Cairns more especially the cable car. Shame you aren’t visiting Western Australia, you would be blown away with the Northwest.

Word of advice about barrier reef cruise on celebrity , especially in Feb. The itinerary is boring , & a hassle with tenders in the north of QLD . Apart from the Great Barrier Reef ( said cost of tours sold by Celebrity is exorbitant) there is really not much to do or see. And don’t go in Feb as it’s around the cyclone season & so not suprised Zach got wet. Wouldn’t recommend this sailing & puzzled why Celebrity sell it.

Met you on the ship. Did the Airlie beach excursion in the morning and road closed due to flooding to the excursion site. Was on the bus for 2.5 hours as the driver was told needed to fill 2.5 hours. So just driving past the McDonalds 4 times as could not stop anywhere. Did hear the driver speaking that your excursion would be cancelled before you left the ship. Can not stop rain and flooding but they were aware of that before either excursion.

Thanks for the additional information. They didn’t tell my group anything like that. We got to the meeting point and Celebrity staff was like “we have just cancelled this one, sorry” and that was it. I think the lack of details given at the last minute frustrated a lot of folks. Nice to meet you on the ship!!

Tender ports are always a high risk for cancellation. A little wind and the swell is a hazard. Both at ship and land. Many older passengers and unstable peope too

Actually, it is usually the company who does the canceling especially since did not know it was canceled until he got to the meet up point near the port. The title was a little misleading.
