I live in the Netherlands and I need to talk German on the phone with my colleagues at our subsidiary in Germany. As I speak fluent Dutch but my German is pretty bad, I often end up mixing Dutch words into my German sentences. My colleagues have had plenty of laughs at my mangled sentences like "Frage Marc mich zurück zu bellen" or "ich bel die Forwarder". Bellen in Dutch means to call on the phone but bellen in German means to bark, so I'm either asking Marc to call me back or bark me back. Poor forwarder is either going to get a call or a bark from me. My German colleagues find these typical Dutch mistakes funny, but luckily they are used to communicating with Dutch people for so many years that they know what I mean anyway.

Just a weird idea, but Stillen also means to breast feed a baby so Ben Stiller might also be Ben Brest feeder? :D

To Don'tTrustTheRabbit: I just wanted to let you know how MUCH I appreciate your videos. Learning the German language really does MEAN SOMETHING to me because ALL of my mother's father's ancestors were from Deutschland. I'm NOT fluent auf Deutsch, aber Ich spreche nur ein wenig Deutsch. I first started learning German in Oberschule. Then later in my life I bought a German language study kit (a book with audio compact discs) that I have used in the past somewhat before. Then I found YOU on RU-vid. I know I'll probably NEVER be fully FLUENT auf Deutsch; however, I really think that I'll always strive to learn it more, even if I'm just kind of toying around with doing so, until the day I DIE!! I figure it's better to know at least SOME of the language that some of my ancestors spoke rather than NONE of it at ALL!! Learning it satisfies the curiousity that I had of my ancestors' languages since I was ein Kind (a child). Please keep posting new videos!! I've definitely learned a LOT of new words auf Deutsch from YOU since high school!! I live in Texas (United States). I would speculate that I am probably NOT the ONLY United States citizen whose ancestors were from Europe and who is interested in getting to know at least SOME of the languages that were spoken by them. There is another RU-vidr (German Girl in America) whose videos I watch as well. She was born and raised in Munich, Germany until the age of 22. She now lives in Cincinatti, Ohio (U.S.A.). She likes to focus more on teaching German CULTURE rather than the language (although she does teach at least a FEW words in the process, THANK GOD!!). I study the Czech language too somewhat because ALL of my dad's ancestors were from there!! The SMALLEST number of my ancestors were from Great Britain on my mom's side. The number of ancestors that I have from each of those 3 countries is INVERSELY related to the DEGREE to which I know each of those languages!! MOST of my ancestors were from Czechoslovakia; however Czech is the language I know the LEAST!! The second most number of my ancestors were from Deutschland, and German is the language that I know 2nd best!! The LEAST number of my ancestors were from Great Britain, however, being born and raised in the United States, English is the only language that I am absolutely FLUENT in!!

Names are tricky things when used in a different country. I remember the deodorant "Body Mist", which was very successful in the UK did not sell well in Germany; in fact they could not sell it at discounted prices. Who would want to spray themselves with "Mist" in the morning. 😊

When Liam Neeson introduces himself by his name, I guess you can answer with "Gesundheit" (bless you) with all the right in the world. Since it might be spelled differently (Neeson vs. Niesen), but essentially when you speak is family name it sounds exactly like "Sneeze" in german ... Liam Sneeze.

Always thought that 'Schwartzkopf' as a name for a company dealing in beauty products would do really badly if they used the English translation of their name!

I’m not a celebrity (except within my close friends), but when I say my name on the phone, people say, “Rest?” I explain that’s the German definition, but it’s spelled Rast. My family called our home “Der Rastplatz” growing up. We know it means rest area, but that’s what made it funny. As for celebrity surnames, Schwarzenegger ranks up there.

Bruce Springsteen's last name in Dutch means Jump stone. He is of actual Dutch ancestry and it is the real meaning of his name. Lots of Dutch themselves have very funny last names. I worked for a while with a guy whose last name was Konijn, which means Kaninchen or Rabbit. BTW. You forgot Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook's founder and CEO) - Mr. Sugar mountain.

True story: went to "Total Wine" looking for Rauchbier. The staff said the had never heard of it, so I spelled it for them and the recognized the spelling. They thought it was French, pronounced it according and was in the "French" section of the store. I told them no, that is not what it is but they would not believe me: even when I pointed out the german on the label. Stupid amis!

Moin. Great vid, just one *zusätzliches Info. 'Kater' is of course 'cat', or more specifically 'tomcat'. The use of the word 'Kater' for 'hangover' isn't from the word 'Kater', it's from the word 'Katarrh' that was pronounced in German (in common everyday speech) as 'Kater', dropping the longer 'arrr' vocal for a shorter 'er' vocal sound at the end. The original use had nothing to do with the animal, but it had everything to do with what was (then) believed to be a main symptom of a hangover which is mucus (and/or) an inflammation of the mucosa (the mucous membrane). The word 'Kater' (with its pronunciation) was just mixed up over time with the word 'Katarrh', causing millions of our bright, young, and overly enthusiastic beer-drinking Germans to pose the post-inebriated question, "Eh? What the hell do cats have to do with it?" as they stumble around saying the most often said, but never carried through, sentence, "I'm never drinkin again!". Where 'never' means '2 days maximum' in German when it has to do with beer, and I'm being generous with time. I don't think there's a first-semester Med student anywhere here that hasn't heard this, which is, of course, where I learned it many a year ago. Yeaaaaa beer! obviously a keystone of modern medical sciences. The only thing I have to add is: Why didn't you use Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson as an example? Yeah, I know 'Rock' isn't part of his real name but the minds-eye visual image of him in a short skirt is funnier.

Ah, yes "Bellen". The bane of every Dutch person trying to speak German. As you said, it means "to bark". However in Dutch it means "to phone (someone)". Hilarity ensues.

In Portuguese, Kelly Ripa's last name is pretty much batten (According to Google translator). "Bell" in English is used exactly as in German as the verb for the noise made by foxhounds / huntsman's dogs. - so you can speak or write of "belling hounds" although this is archaic.

tbh though, a lot of Americans with German sounding names got it via Yiddish, which is technically a german dialect. e.g. Appelboim (Apfelbaum), Shwartz (Schwartz), Noyman (Neumann) etc. Others of course have direkt German heritage, be it Jewish or not (I'm a proud Jewish-German Blumenthal for example 🙂).
