Dern is an actor's actor. Onscreen, his unpredictability is his trademark. Kazan recognized his genius in the early days, rightfully so.

I think one of my favorite roles for Dern was as Joe Danby in Support Your Local Sheriff. It is so funny to see the guy that most often plays tough guys as comic relief type.

IT'S BECAUSE OF 'SILENT RUNNING' (starring Bruce Dern, director Douglas Trumbull - 1971) ... that I became a filmmaker. Thanks, Mr. Dern. You've made a difference in many lives, in particular, yours truly. D.A.

Bruce Dern is one of my favorite actors. He is just so singular. Nobody else to compare him to. If he'd come up at any other time in movie history, he probably wouldn't have had the same level of success. But the 70s was such a great decade for movies. I think my favorite role of Bruce's is King of Marvin Gardens. 2nd favorite is the Cowboys. He scared the bejeesus out of those kids!

One guy today that I think has some small similarities to Bruce is Walton Goggins and it was so awesome to see them share a screen together in the hateful eight. Bruce did the unhinged bad guy so well in those old Westerns.

Dern was so good at playing the villain. Hang 'Em High might be my favorite example.
@rhmayer1
@rhmayer1 2 года назад
Indeed. And although he had a lot of bad guy roles, it seems to me they were always slightly different. In Hang 'Em High he was kind of a smarmy, conniving murderous horse thief villain. In others he might be more ruthless or cocky or psychopathic or... David Duchovny is similar. He always has the same kinda nasal monotone slow-talking demeanor for his characters, yet with subtle differences between his Fox Mulder/X-Files, Hank Moody/Californication, Sam Hodiak/Aquarius roles, etc. In both Dern and Duchovny, although they played very similar roles in their respective careers, while watching either of them you never thought about their other roles. Both are so good that they just draw you in and you get lost in their current role completely.

Not a teen as yet, when I saw John Wayne and the Cowboys(1972) and saw Bruce Dern did what he did, I hated him as well after that. Once I got older, I got over it, and admired him a lot as an actor. Listening to him here, his memory is remarkable at 86 at the time.

Talk about right place, right time. Bruce was so fortunate to enter the actors studio in the beginning of the golden age of film making between actors, writers and directors. Wow...just imagine who else was around him in that school that also became famous or even iconic...and how many stories he can tell.
@DavidHBurkart
@DavidHBurkart 2 года назад
There are actually 13 movies in which John Wayne died... of course, some are more iconic than others, but a mere fraction of the total number of movies he acted in, from as early as 1928 to 1976. 48 years, still very much influencing actors such as Dern himself up until the time of his death.

Anyone who enjoys the acting of Bruce Dern should read his wonderful autobiography. Also, it is worth remembering that, in The War Wagon, he and another 'villain' is shot by the duo of John Wayne and Kirk Douglas (you decide who shot who - Wayne's line is 'Mine was taller!' and that suggests Bruce) so maybe The Cowboys was just evening up the score.

Dern really explained how actors like Brando and Dean in that famous actors studio in NY changed acting in the 50s. Originally actors had a standout role and then were used to mainly play that one character again and again. Wayne, Gary Cooper, Cary Grant, Jimmy Stewart, Holden, Tyrone Power and Gable all were like that playing the same role over and over. Then you start to get guys like Nicholson and De Niro in the 70s who are literal chameleons!
