Unless a marriage is broken beyond prepare, married people should be talking about their marriage--and not analyze it to death. If two people love each other, they want to make the other spouse happy or try to resolve any issues. It's called communication? If SJP's feeling about not talking about the marriage is good, then maybe there's problems not addressed fueling denial and resentment. Ironically in the second SATC movie, Carrie Bradshaw and her husband John Preston aka "Big" begin to live seperate lives and her friends in the movie are concerned. SJP is so fake. She is all facade. If she smiles any harder, her face would crack. Sleepovers? What, are they dating? The man is her *HUSBAND*. When SJP and Matthew Broderick do meet each other on occasion and they have stuff to share, they probably meant the pool boy. Julia Roberts and Danny Moder act like buddies and nothing more, Julia also seems a bit weary and flippant, like she'd rather be anywhere else than sitting with her husband. I felt tension between them. Kiss her on the cheek, dude--or vice versa. I guess they don't hold each other's hand much. Kim and Kanye? My guess is Kanye is not the easiest person to live with and that a little Kanye goes a long way. That I CAN understand. My ex ex ex psycho, smothering, over possessive, controling, flying-off-the-handle boyfriend/fiance was hard to be around and I could only handle him in small doses. I wanted a separate life away from him, that I refused to talk to him on the phone every week. He always wanted to start a fight or argument and I said NOPE. Just think if I had married him!!!

My 27 year marriage ended last year, distance and his cheating. Space and doing your own thing is fine, to an extent. If you let it go too far, your relationship really suffers. Bigly. I’ll never marry again.

if no kids are in the picture, then separate lives are fine. but if there are kids, it is extremely selfish to be a 'weekend parent' like jamie oiliver said...having 'separate lives' while there are kids just means the kids grow up in a cold home, devoid of intimacy and a example of a loving relationship. they will grow up to have very messy relationships of their own
I don't like being with my bf all the time. I like my own company sometimes. We've been together over 10 years now. Not every couple needs to spend every minute together. Whatever works for you.
Hey, same here. My guy and I have been together for 9 years. We live in the same house and sleep in the same bed. We have dates and together time, but we also have independent hobbies and personal spaces in our house. It works for us.
some people are natural introverts. it's best when you identify with someone who is similar in that regard. people who require constant human contact couldn't deal with this. it's probably Julia and Danny's issue. humans are different, we just have to be aware of ourselves and how we treat others.

I love him and he loves me we truly like each other and we always have we wouldn’t have ever wanted to be apart. I have always been a loner. I have been married for over 40 years. A lot of people would say we live separate lives and I guess we do. We always manage to spend a few hours together each day. The majority of the time he is working or involved in church duties. The distance doesn't brother me any more, but when we were younger it did. God bless

My dentist and her dentist husband have been together for 30 years and share 3 houses together and their office space. There are 2 rooms, 2 exam chairs, etc., but no door in-between. I don't know how they do it. They have one daughter who is away at college. They seem to thrive living and working on top of each other. I don't know how they do it, but both are super nice and great dentists. God bless 'em. I am 51 and have never had the desire to marry. My mom tells me that I have expressed that thought since I was 6 years old. Go figure.
Sounds like my dentist's too. I was married, but better off living alone. Not everyone wants or needs to be married. It's your life, be happy and ignore those that don't support you.

Sometimes people are just better off living without their significant other, or just be on their own, period. Some people stick it out for the sake of the kids or have another one to try to repair their relationship. I think there are some folks who are fearful of time apart with their spouse. Having time apart isn't all that bad! When my husband goes on short work trips (for few days), it is nice to have a break! lol Such as: He hates Pizza Hut and I love it. When he is gone for a few days, I order a large pizza from there and eat it all! LOL
It allows you to stay true to yourself and not lose your inner identity. It’s easier to compromise the other person’s needs and desires when you have enough space to do the things that make you fulfilled.
Living separate but together lives speaks well of keeping your identity in check. You don't have to always be Mr. and Mrs. Plenty of couples throughout history had their own apartments, even sleeping apart,and their marriage was stronger for it. It's honestly what I would want. Being around another person 24/7 is damned hard.

A woman I met a couple of years ago told me she was divorced after about 25 years of marriage and 3 kids. He traveled a great deal, and it was only after the 25 years that she learned he had another wife and 2 kids in another city. Oops. He married her first, btw. Anyway, she dumped him upon learning this but the other wife decided to "keep" him. You hear about such things, but I never thought I'd meet someone who experienced it.
arx754 that’s pretty much what all this “healthy separate lives” crap is. It’s people who like the convenience of a permanent partner as needed and they have their close go-to person(s) outside the relationship.
arx754 you’re very lucky then. In my own and my husband’s field, this causes tensions when colleagues and associates assume you have similar lifestyle and you’re put in uncomfortable positions. I have a close female relative who does this and it affects her parents, children, and friends. Again, you are blessed it has no impact on you, but it affects some of us out here.

Living appart has been around for ages. Our ancestors went off to war, grand-parents had to work away on major projects, and it's the same today. So living apart for long periods of time isn't unconventional imo.

Marriage is sharing your life with someone. If you manage to do that from a distance, fine, otherwise you just have a contract stating you're married really, which is really silly when there are so many interesting people in the world for you to be alone and married at the same time.
Being married doesn’t mean you have to be up under each other 24/7. Far too many people are trapped in loveless marriages because they’re afraid of being alone. It’s a known fact that people who can’t be alone, by themselves, make for bad partners. Every serial monogamist out there is afraid of being alone.
My husband travels a lot with his job and is away from home over 300 nights a year. Have been married to each other for 18 years now. We both know this is the only way marriage would survive for the both of us LOL! I completely understand this way of being married. I never in a million years would have thought to like or agree with this way of marriage...where you barely see each other. Maybe it wouldn't work if we were married to someone else, but for us it's perfect!
Wow 300 nights? So you only see him 2 months out of the year? I'm glad you found something that works for you. I could never do that, I would not be able to stay interested or faithful in that long of an absence. My fiance did two tours in Iraq, 15 months the first time and 10 months the next. I was able to wait for him because I knew when he came home, he would be with me every day. But if he would indefinitely be gone like that... there's no way. I read that in the early or mid 2000s, housing experts were saying that two master bedrooms would become more and more common by now. Then the housing market crashed and everything went to hell, so now I think if couples don't have to live with a roommate, they're doing all right
I think in reality, if most regular people could afford it they would lead separate lives from their spouses too. Every married couple I know talks about how you don’t really know a person until you live with them. Most of these people didn’t live together until after they got married. So, I really think people would be happier if they could afford to live in separate quarters/apartments/houses.
While some couples are apart because one is filming.....the rest are only together for short periods of time.....my husband and I are married 33 years and I very much enjoy him being home with me....I still think he is the funniest man I have ever known....we talk for hours and yes the spark is still there between us

Awww I think living separately can really save a lot of marriages. Sometime when you're in each others face you become cranky and bored. Nice to miss each other, makes the heart grow fonder if its truly meant to be.
My husband and i live apart because i have a disabled son from my last marriage and the stress of this and running businesses together became very stressful. Since making this decision things have been so much better for us!

A lot of divorced couples argue over who gets to see the child the most, most know a child having regular contact & a good relationship with both parents is best.
This is definitely an upper-middle class trend. Most of us don't have the financial privilege of living lives apart from our spouses without difficulties.

If it works, and the time the spend together is focused and present. I don't have a problem with it. It's better than couples that spend lots of time together, but are not engaged and don't really communicate.

Confused how this is an issue, my parents were one of the only still married couples I knew until my dads passing. They both lived their own lives and got along well when together like to the point I never witnessed a fight.
It's only an issue for judgmental people who think they get to pass judgment on how others choose to live their lives. Most of these people still believe in fairy tales and will, eventually, learn that life is REAL and there is no "normal"; so people should do what works for them.
I admire Julia Roberts love for Danny Moder. I don't know anything about him so I can't see what she sees in him, but, he must have something to keep her so in love all these years.
I can honestly say that I can't relate to this. My husband and I have been together for twenty two years and married for twenty years this July and we are more loved up than ever. We are best friends and could happily spend all day every day together. I do encourage him to get out with his friends sometimes mind you and obviously, he works (I'm too ill to work, sadly), but he chooses to stay with me for the majority of the time. I know that we got very lucky, just like my parents did and our way doesnt work for lots of people. I just couldnt imagine living a separate life from him.

wow, my parents have been together since she was 15 years old, married for 54 years now and spend almost 24/7 together. It would drive me insane but works for them and they are incredibly happy. What ever works for the both of you is right, the only stipulation I have is kids...if you make the decision to have them, then you both need to take care of them, not a host of nannies either, in my opinion.
We’ve been married for 10 years and we have grown together, it’s not easy. But I love him so much, and he probably loves me more haha. We have moved mountains for our marriage. I am a home keeper in order to keep our relationship and our family our top priority. We simply think of the future. What can we do now that will matter most later. Being absent will only hurt later, and it can damage our children, and future generations, we don’t want to be responsible for that. I’m not an “independent woman” In fact I am a proud FULLY dependent woman. Dependent on my husband and I to be ONE unit, to work together in love toward the future for our family. It seems like career is the most important thing to these people. God, my husband and my children are everything. The rest falls in to place with discipline, and hard work. These are not marriages to look up to. These people might love each other , but they place career above all, that is not right.

Answer: Because they wanted to and still choose to. With a divorce rate of over 50%, it's obvious that "traditional" marriages don't work; and even when they appeared to back in the day, it was only because women were prisoners in those marriages, with no other options. When will people, like you, learn that there is no one way to live life and there are no "rules" to life? Everything isn't for everybody; live and let live. If it's not for you, then figure out what is and do you... but also keep in mind that many people chase a "societal norm" only to figure out there is no such thing as "normal".

Either your're married, or not. You can't be around your spouse 24/7, and if you need alone time build a She-Shed or Man Cave, but stop the foolishness. Pffttt, living separate lives in different houses sounds like a separation to me. If he wants to go surfing all the time to get away, then it is cheaper than putting out over 3 million bucks for a house across the street from you. Me and my husband live seperately, by choice. It has saved our marraige. We argued all the time when we lived together. Its hard work but its worth it. I wouldn't want anyone else and i'm as sure as i can be that he doesn't either. Each to their own i guess ✌
I think when you can afford to have private jets to get around, then your life is very different from a majority of people. It might not be so weird to have several living spaces and not be with your spouse all the time. You can always get together for photo shoots so the gossip stays low. It might just be a way to avoid tabloid news and live their own lives. I wouldn't be surprised if the Obamas were doing that too.
After being widowed after a 42 year marriage, to make a marriage work a couple should never be apart from each other ever...in fact they should never get out of bed! LOL...just kidding!
