When the Earth orbits the Sun, the Sun’s position relative to the background stars changes. Over a year, the sun will appear to make a path through 12 constellations (the Zodiac) due to our changing position relative to the sun.
Here we’ve plotted the view from the ground for a year (bottom) and the view from a virtual camera in space, showing the inner planets as they orbit the sun, but rotating with the Earth as it orbits. The Zodiac region is shown in the blue strip in both panels. (The Sun and Earth are enlarged in the upper panel to be visible)
