From Leo: As a clean, Jazzy player, I have been using the Eminence Cannabis Rex speakers in almost all of my amps for a few years. All the frequency range with no boomy, muddy or ice pick sounds. I guess that hemp fiber makes a great cone. At 50 Watts power handling, I never worry about the 2 in my Fender twin or in my 2 X 12 Cab. It Looks like Celestion noticed the popularity and wanted some of the pie.
Just got two of these and they are a really DOPE greenback variation. Has the signature snarl you’d expect out of a gb, but with a more pronounced broken-in sound and feel than regular modern greenbacks-so they are well-suited to take a really dry amp (like a Rectifier) and get it to play all greasy, slimy and fun. These also record superbly! The Hempback just dethroned the EVH as my favorite greenback.
I think Celestion wanted to compete with the Eminence Cannabis Rex which has really been successful for quite a while. I'm honestly surprised that speakers that can tame harsh treble and still sound good and articulate aren't in higher demand.
@@JackFossettTame harsh treble, you say? I wonder how this would do in some of my old solid state amps, since they seem to need that more than my tube amps
Great demo as always obviously, you have made this sometime ago, but I am just now needing to find out about these speakers and I am glad I have. I was a big fan of the black back speakers that I guess the big C stopped making sometimes back before 1980 I have bought some scumbag speakers however I still found they did not tame some of the sharp edges. I was getting out of a Marshall stud, silver jubilee this speaker gave me exactly what I wanted, and if it doesn’t keep working, I can always roll it up and smoke it I reckon lol I get you on the stoner jokes but no kidding. This thing performed phenomenally I am generally a G2 M cream back man and that’s all this is with a hemp back cone either way phenomenal cuts the highs. It’s just like it says and performs, amazingly under all conditions. I like it even better than my scumbags, which are handmade as I am sure you are aware they are great speakers and I have a 412 with those, want your opinion what do you think of using JM 45 with a 410 instead of a 212 or 112 looking for feedback on bottom end overall thanks I know and love your blues music and I’m a great listener. Your improv is amazing sorry if it’s misspelling anything I’m dictating. I’m totally blind, but I have pretty perfectand I truly love what you’re doing on your every video video is just amazing. Amazing guitar thank you for all the great tips. I have Shirley learned a lot and picked up a lot of licks. 1:42
Jack - sounds great! I have a Supro Delta King 12 (is the tweed in the background one?). My Supro currently has a Celestion Creamback NEO, which sounds very good. But, I really like the Smokey midrange of this Hempback, plus I’m looking at the ToneSpeak New Orleans 1250 Hemp speaker. Do you think the Supro Delta King 12 would sound great with the Celestion Hempback?
I think i might feel a bit paranoid if i bought one Sounds great! I use some bright barden pickups in a strat and this might be the ticket to tame some of the crazy treble. Grest demo
Really weeds out the highs... I've been curious about this speaker as I haven't found any good demos (imo). It definitely has that "Celestion" sound/crunch but also SUPER dark. I feel it would appeal to those that don't necessarily dig bright highs or have an amp that's straight up shrill. I have the opposite problem, I'm always wanting more treble from everything 😂 I have to keep myself in check when playing with others as I'm sure it's only my ears craving more treble ... Probably playing too loud for too many years 😂😢 Anyways, nice little demo! First one of this speaker that I think is done well.
Hey Jack i love your reviews. What's your thoughts on this speaker in a Marshall DSL40CR. Was going to get a Neo Creamback but yhen just saw your video. Id appreciate your thoughts.
I use a Cannabis Rex in a cab with a DSL 1 and it works great. So this one should too i guess. I play with a bump in the mids from my eq pedal and pickups (Seymour Duncan JB) and it feels like hemp speakers just smooth the high-ends high-mids and the ice picks feeling. I am thinking of puting it a Marshall kinda amp too.
Yup, someone in the meeting said “we need to get this speaker rolling - let’s find some RU-vid channels that are really smoking in popularity” - but they settled on me anyway!
So i have a Sweetwater Princeton Reverb that came stock with a Cannabis Rex which i assume is similar. Didn't like it at all in the Princeton, replaced it with a Jupiter 12 25 watt paper cone. The Jupiter is so much better, to my ears, in that amp. The CREX sounded like a wet blanket was on that amp. I might put the crex in an external cab and give it a shot. I was ready to list my Crex for sale.
I've used the C Rex before - based on my experience, this one definitely has more top end clarity. I do love Jupiter speakers also btw, the speaker I have in the actual Princeton cab is their 10" alnico.
@JackFossett that's what I'm hearing in your video. The hempback sounds better to me than the crex. I have the Princeton with the 12" so that changes tone there as well. I'm really enjoying the Jupiter. To my ears it's about perfect.
I used to have the DSL40c - I could definitely see this speaker being good for that series. I had the same problem - I played one gig with the treble turned all the way off once.
