I went down this rabbit hole deep…It started in 1987 when I bought a Jubilee 4x12 with the Vintage speakers as an upgrade….These were the very first “V30’s”….they were built exclusively for Marshall,and still are to this day…Marshall first put these in the Studio 15 in about 1986,but they really rolled them out with the Jubilee series in 87….Celestion came out with the “off the shelf”version,but the Marshall one was and is THE original design of the V30…Celestion has changed the design many times over the years to make them easier to produce,but the Marshall design is proprietary to them….Mesa got a production run for themselves in the 90’s when Celestion changed the design again,and Mesa wanted to keep the same version as before……I went on a binge,and ended up with sets of 1987’s..1993’s…1998’s…2000’s…2003’s and finally 2019’s…..They are my favorite speakers ever,and I much prefer the original Marshall version to all the others….and they do sound different…so when someone says,I hate V30’s,I always say,which ones?..

I have a 2554 SJ combo from 1987. Love that little massive amp. I also have a comparatively new cab from Thomann with 'V30' in.I use it for my Helix and for my SV20. I love both.

The speakers are all the same spec, same thing. The differences we all hear are really simple to explain. 1) older speakers that have been broken in sound better 2) ALL speakers off the assembly line do not come out exactly the same. You can have two speakers sequentially right off the assembly line sounding audibly different. I know how tempting it is to believe in this myth that there is ONE perfect V30 and all the rest are bad or not as good. It isn't that simple. There is no actual way of determining X so called version of the V30 is better than all the rest, I can find you a cabinet right now with the Marshall labeled V30, hell it can be one from 87 that hasn't been played, and it CAN I PROMISE you. sound like total shit. There is no magical guarantee because it says marshall on it that it will be better. The marshall versions were made to 16 ohms. Most other V30 cabs are fitted with 8 ohm versions. That is an ACTUAL difference, but I have a feeling no one wants to hear that. Anyway good luck everyone lol
@colelewis9940
@colelewis9940 Год назад
Make this as clear as I possibly can. The ACTUAL reason for anyone curious about why even are there these V30's with different labels/names put on them? It's really simple. Amplifier brands buy huge stocks of speakers, For example with the marshall version, they wanted all of them to 16 ohms. Mesa, wanted them all in 8 ohm. Thats it guys. Thats literally are there is to it. The amp brands buy their stock of speakers, if the speakers WERE actually different, THEY WOULD TELL YOU. Hughes and kettner had bought V30's to their spec for their cabs many moons ago, where there was an actual difference, they used the celestion lead cones instead of bass cones.

@scottpeters4401 Год назад
@@colelewis9940 the Marshall and Mesa V30’s are made in the UK,the regular versions are made in China…Marshall has their own “T”number for the production line….In 1987 ALL of the G12 Vintage’s were 8ohm speakers in the Jubilee 4x12 cabs…..The V30 was exclusive to Marshall in the beginning….they still are….I have many sets from many different era’s….The Marshall G1230 sounds very,very different from a standard Celestion V30..,it’s not just a the same speaker with a different sticker slapped on it…

I vastly prefer the Marshall G12 Vintage, here and in person. I’ve played Chinese V30s, the Mesa V30s, and the Marshall versions, and every time, the Marshall comes out on top. The Marshall G12 Vintage has plenty of the V30 high-end chirp and high-mid grind and is plenty aggressive, but without the honk and harsh mess of the other two. Full disclaimer: I’ve played a bunch of amps through these speakers, but only played my Bogner Ecstasy 3534 through all three speakers, and generally go for a high-gain sound that has snarl but a fuller bottom end. Euge captured the differences really well and confirmed again why I prefer the Marshall version.

The Rabbit hole of V30's is there are different variations like the Mesa OEM V30 which I use exclusively ;) Short story: my 2nd cab I purchased new in the late 90's is a Marsh Vintage 4x12 with the marsh v30's and a friend had a Trace Elliot 4x12 cab with UK V30's and we compared them and I like the Trace cab speakers better for some reason and so we decided to swap all four speaks and I still have the UK V30's from that cab dated 1995 and they sound great still all these years and sound really close if not the same as the Mesa OEM V30's (16ohm variant btw). I wish I kept the Marsh V30's still only because it's so hard to find them for sale without having to have to buy a used or new cab to get them!!! Great video like always and interesting to hear the differences between V30's. Rock on! \m/

Both sounded really good. My 4x12 cab has Celestion G12k-85's. Which sound darker to me, but I like them. They are not harsh on the highs. Easy to EQ a good chunky tone. We get used to whatever speakers we have. Our ears adjust to them over time. We start to accept their tone as being "normal", because it is familiar. But like you always say...... if it sounds good, then it's good.

The Celestion V30 has such nice mids. They are my favourite speaker. I will never get rid of my old Mesa oversized 4 X 12 cabinet. I noticed the greenbacks in that cabinet, those are my 2nd favourite speaker. The greenbacks are the best speaker for a Marshall head IMO. Just like the V30 works perfectly with a Mesa head the Greenback I think is the perfect speaker for a Marshall head.

Thanks for the video. I had a 1936 Vintage cab with marshall vintage speakers in it. The clerks at guitar store told me the cab had V30s in it, but it never sounded right to me. Sounded dead (I like bright crunch). Opened it up, found the vintage marshalls, not vintage 30s, removed them, put them in the attic and put in the V30s I am used to. Like night and day. These two types of speakers don't really sound alike to me in person or on this video. I much prefer the V30 regardless of where it is made.

V30s are perfect in a blend with more darker and rounded sounding speakers. I run a V30 with a Hesu Demon together in a 212 and they complement each other very well. Tight and punchy with that distinct top end a V30 is known for. Yet V30s are a bit "boring" and harsh sounding to many, the sound they produce miced up with a SM57 is still some kind of the gold standard in modern metal productions

I really enjoy both here. The Marshall vintage sounds more relaxed, balanced, but all over slightly duller. It sounds like the kind of speaker that would be nice to hear by itself for a longer period of time. The V30 sounds so aggressive and in your face that I can get how some people would get fatigued over time. But it’s so brutal. And I think you would stand out way more in a live setting, and it also has more of that famous angry wall of chainsaws sound. These speakers would sound great mixed together in the same cab.

Excellent comparison. Mostly preferred the v30 over the Marshall. Used the Marshalls in a 1960AV for years. Once I started using Orange amps, The 1960AV really fell out of favor. Too spikey and no richness. Made the amps sound cheap. It's all about finding the right speakers and cab to compliment the amp.

That's nice. I was just looking for a comparison vid of these.😉 Best Vintage 30 i ever played is the Vintage 30MF from the Mode Four Cabs. Vintage 30 for the not so mid-heavy Peavey. And Marshall Vintage for the Boogie and the Marshall. For me: Still my G12K-100s.

I felt that although the Chinese V 30 was more mid range focused and tight , it sounds more harsh. I'm guessing that it's probably better to have that and EQ out some of the harsh high end? As opposed to with the Marshall speaker one would have to do more EQ corrections to bring up the mids and tighten the low end? Have you tried the eminence dv 77? Amazing speaker for metal

Hey Euge, got a question for you. Have you ever noticed a difference in tone between a wired 16 Ohms cab vs. a 8 Ohms cab? I read some people find a 16 Ohms speaker brighter than it's 8 Ohms version... Can't say I noticed that difference though, or at least can't remember one since I've been using the EVH for over 5 years after selling the VHT FB.

Naah. I mean it would take lots of effort to compare ’cos I’d need to put the same (but) 8 ohm speakers to my cab (’cos cab makes a big difference too - some are brighter, some this and some that) and record with the same mic in the same position etc. And I definitely don’t have time or interest to do that. My motto has always been that ”If it sounds good it’s good and if it ain’t broken don’t fix it”.

Do you know what these cab's are made of? Like plywood, pressboard, Birch etc? Nothing to do with the vid, but just curious. Also what are your thoughts on this cab? You really diggin it? Thanks man!

@@EugeValovirta230V Oh nice man! Ya, I've got an 80's JCM800 with G12-65's, but theres no grill or back panel lol. I'm gunna restore it. And I'm on the hunt for a newer Marshall cab, maybe one of these or a TV Cab. Cheers brother!

Celestions were broken in and Marshalls are not? Does it make hearable difference?

The V30 has a higher sensitivity rating at 100 DB while the greenback is 97 DB sp the V30 will seem a little louder .

I hate the Vintage 30 on a Plexi-style circuit… even a broken down V30 sounds too mid spikey…. Im a greenback guy for life.

The Marshall’s definitely sound much warmer. The V30’s are definitely harder, more aggressive. I like and use both. Excellent info as always Euge. 🤟🏽🤟🏽🤟🏽🤟🏽🤟🏽

Marshall is tighter and more scooped rather the mid heavier v30

Marshall is more clearer defined and punchier. It all really depends on your setup, style and sound you are after.

I heard this too. I think our monitors and listening environment really influences what we hear from these samples. The Marshall Vintage sounded like a "finished" guitar sound that has been low and high cut to fit into the mix. The V30 sounded big and nasty...in a great way, but I would imagine that with drums and bass it would need to be eq'd to fit better and be heard in a track.

They’re very different speakers. Mesa’s V30s are different from the Chinese V30s everyone else uses, which are different from the “Marshall Vintage by Celestion”. From what I’ve been able to gather, the closest thing Celestion sells to “Marshall Vintage” are the V-Types, the difference being Marshall ones are made in the UK, while V-Types are made in China. But they sound pretty damn close. Also: Mesa heads sound their best with British V30s. They’re literally made for those speakers. Marshall heads sound their best with Marshall cabs. Swapping those usually makes the midrange sound “off”.

To me the midrange is always 'off' with any boogie amp.

the Celestion is made in China, Marshall UK..for me..the Marshall original V30 sounds bigger and fuller, smoother and nicer overall.

When you look at the slave labor aspect of the Chinese made Celestion you have to honor the person who made it under unbearable brutal demands of being sleep deprived or skipping meals and many like businesses workers having to camp at their work stations to fill demands from their Corporate slave drivers. I have a Chinese made Ibanez electric guitar not perfect for 5 yrs.but I thank the hard work this person put into his or her life or death situation to get a meager pay. That said the Chinese brand is what Michael Sweet (Stryper) switched to a few years ago and I love that bite and heavy sound these speakers seem to be consistent everytime considering China's disparage of all involved in putting them out! Nice video...Peace.
