Celia Sheen plays the theme tune from ITV's drama series "Midsomer Murders" on the Theremin. She has done so, along with incidental music, on the soundtrack of every episode for fourteen years. This fascinating instrument was the world's very first electronic instrument, invented in 1920 by Russian scientist Lev Theremin. Of course, nobody ever sees Celia's performances on the recordings, but what makes it interesting is that the Theremin is played without being touched!

It's difficult enough to play a musical instrument where you can see and feel the keys or the strings or whatever makes the notes, but to play something like this where there is no tactile or visible guide takes musicianship to a totally new level.

Okay. That was kind of spooky. I can't believe, when I asked my boyfriend, "What is that weird sounding instrument they use in Midsomer Murders?" that he knew the name of this thing. Never had a clue it existed. A whole new dimension of sound.

Bravo!!! Wouldn't be Midsomer without Ms. Sheen and her Theremin.

RIP Celia Sheen. You made the world a better place by playing the Tony Henk theremin. Thank you.

Near Seattle there's a museum of electronics that my husband dragged me into and it turned out to be one of the best experiences ever. They have a theremin set up for visitors to "play" and it is TOUGH~! I made lots of racket but nothing approaching melody. This woman is extremely talented!

I love how "haunting" the sound of the theremin is. Such a fascinating instrument. I can't imagine how difficult it must be to play well given there's absolutely nothing tactile about it.

I am very late to Midsomer. I didn’t know of the show at all until 2020. Thankfully it was suggested and posted on RU-vid. I am bedridden and I try and watch 2 episodes a day now. I miss Troy and the banter from where I am at. The musical performance is such a talented honor to now have seen. RIP.

I love Midsomer Murders, its always a great chillout watch without too much horrible violence, great actors every time and fabulous settings. I'm rewatching all the series because its nicer on the eyes than the dramas these days. I'd rather watch the fictional midsomer villages and its beautiful houses. ❤

Gotta have a great ear to play one of these. Sometimes you see Theremin players with an in-ear monitor to hear the pitch before it's played, but as you can see in this video, Celia Sheen is playing without one, and the notes she plays are well-centered right from the beginning of each.

The theme is beautifully written - rather haunting, nostalgic, and evocative of the past.

Electro-magnetic waves of very weak energy are generated around the long metal antenna. These waves are of a definite length and frequency. The approach of a hand, which is an electrical conductor, alters the conditions in the electro-magnetic field surrounding the antenna. This changes its capacity and thus affects the frequency of the current. A sort of invisible touch is produced in the space surrounding the antenna, and the pitch increases as the finger is brought nearer the antenna.

What an ingenious composition by Jim Parker. That's the sign of a gifted film composer; hitting the atmosphere right on the spot. This music really sets the entire "tone" of these films... Such a nice melody, but at the same spooky - everything so fine and dandy :-)

This haunting theme never fails to send chills down my spine. It truly explores the darker recesses of the human mind.

Exquisite. The world has, sadly, lost a unique musician.
