that's my question as well. However as a cellist, I gotta point out that our strings are under VASTLY higher tension than those on a bass, and presumably have to be stronger as a result. How that affects the acoustic properties I have no fucking clue. They definitely feel different to the touch.

Some cello(and double bass)strings are synthetic core, wound with some fine metal and then covered with another synthetic substance. they sound amazing and stay in tune way better than gut strings ever could
@alexandersimmons3350
@alexandersimmons3350 2 года назад
metal strings for cellos has become the standard. They are made from a wider variety of metals; I think mine may have tungsten alloys in the cores. Violins are typically similar. It's been a long time since gut strings were widely used and synthetic materials, while commonly used, are not the dominant style.
@mikeharris6833
@mikeharris6833 2 года назад
@@alexandersimmons3350 the core is usually synthetic gut.
@alexandersimmons3350
@alexandersimmons3350 2 года назад
@@mikeharris6833 a lot of modern players favor the brighter, bolder tone of the metal cores, but yes, synthetic gut is common as well. Often cellists use metal for the low strings and synthetic gut for the high strings, to make them mellower and less shrill. Granted it was quite some time ago that I did my research when buying my strings (which I have not changed in more than fifteen years) and trends may have shifted. I know mine are metal, all four of them.

I think this is one of the best videos you’ve ever made. The strings, notes..you should do more of this. Show how versatile the bass can really be even with a few tweaks. Absolutely beautiful. No picks though. Do not shame yourself that way. Excellent video.

Next logical step... use a bow on them :D! Seriously, this sounds incredible and I'm really curious what a cello bow on cello strings -- on an electric bass -- sounds like. (I think Tool's Mantra uses a cello with some guitar effects but somehow I don't think this will sound like that).
@marnaehrech1223
@marnaehrech1223 2 года назад
The guitar doesn't have a curved bridge so you couldn't use a bow
@leftaroundabout
@leftaroundabout 2 года назад
The flat bridge is one part of the problem, the insufficient space to touch even the outer strings is another, and finally even if you do manage produce a decent tone the pickups won't bring it out well because they're designed to pick up _vertical_ string vibrations, but a bow makes the string vibrate only sideways.
@facemash
@facemash 2 года назад
@@leftaroundabout The strings vibrate in an ellipse. That goes for however you make the sound, bowing, plucked, or otherwise.
@leftaroundabout
@leftaroundabout 2 года назад
@@facemash Nope. A bowed string vibrates pretty much flat in the direction of the bow movement. Looking really closely, it may be some kind of warbly multi-twist figure-eight pattern, but not an ellipse.

Wow I usually avoid these clickbaity titled musician videos but my god this was absolutely stunning. This was fucking beautiful and extremely well done. And you can tell you practice the shit out of it but probably recorded it super quickly. It has that rawness of honest talent. Amazing job dude.

Seriously. Both of you need to lighten up. Nobody mentioned skin or people in my comment. Today I went thru the comment section for Charles a friend to make him smile with silly comments. You guys are the only people who got offended. Smile. Laugh. This is America the greatest country in earth. Things have gotten so serious and sad, that's why you turn on the news and everywhere you look it's horror. I love you guys. Be happy. Be safe. Be free of covid!
@KarkaranosBuilds
@KarkaranosBuilds 2 года назад
@@DetroitFettyghost Maybe I misinterpreted your comment, which you have since deleted, but it sounded like you were saying that you were hoping the color of intrigue didn’t make the news because of people feeling it was being discriminated against. This ties in very closely with current political climate in the US and implied that you were referring to the attention drawn to the rights of POC in the past year and a half. I’m sorry if I misinterpreted your comment, but I can get behind the idea of spreading smiles through a comment section, although perhaps jokes that can be interpreted with strong political undertones may not be the best way to do so.

My wife is cellist. She wanted to be able to play heavier, rock based music with me without changing too much about her approach. I did some modding on a Dean Zone bass (refilling the nut, truss rod adjust, etc) and string it with flat wound strings tuned an octave lower than her cello. Very cool tone and fun to play
