"Cold Lake," pretty much sums it up. Avoid the poison water if you can!... It's not quite as bad as everyone says it is. Still has some great songs, they're just held back by awful: production, vocals, songwriting, aging, and artwork.

Tom's drunken glammish vocals on the live in hammersmith are hilarious especially when he sings the classics like 'Into the crpyts of ray'. Selltic Frost - Cold Lake

If "Cold Lake" had been a Tom G. Warrior solo album (or even under another band name) it might have been received a little bit better than it initially was. Putting the Celtic Frost name on it stigmatized it right out of the gate. It's by no means the worst album I've ever heard but it pales in comparison to what came before and what came after it.

Patrick William I agree! Vanity/Nemesis is a quality release, highly underrated and underappreciated! I just wish that I could find a cd copy of that album that's not ridiculously-priced.

It's interesting to hear a younger person's perception of this album; so many years after the fact. Cool that you're free of the bias the we old-schoolers were bringing to the table back in the day. Myself, like so many fans, was blindsided by it upon it's release. Having been 100% on-board with everything they'd ventured into previously INCLUDING the "Into The Pandemonium" album that had scared away many a metalhead previously with it's use of samples, and more avant garde elements...was still put off by the more hard rock influences on "Cold Lake". Mainly because it just wasn't a particularly GOOD hard rock album. It's a confusing hybrid, that hasn't aged very well. And interestingly, the Producer - Tony Platt; was something of a big-budget hit-maker at that point, having worked on many successful rock albums previously. Which seems odd considering just how crap-tastic the album sounds. Anyway; it's probably not as terrible as I remember it being, but still nothing I'm gonna dig out of my vinyl collection any time soon. The WORST part of this era of CF is that the only commercially available live video of the band was shot on the Cold Lake tour...uuugh. Fortunately in the YT era, there are plenty of other live shows available.

I guess it's like a lot of albums/eras that people hate. When it happens people are the most opinionated but then when time passes they embrace it a little more. Such as the Graves era Misfits, some people hated it when it happened, but now some people prefer it or equal it to Danzig.
@MARSHOMEWORLD
@MARSHOMEWORLD 7 лет назад
Agreed. I for one really enjoyed the Graves era. Saw them a few times back then and they were a great live act. I think a lot of the Danzig die-hards had forgotten that Glen had abandoned the band; and talked shit about their legacy for years. The material was also very different, but over a decade had passed since the original line-up disbanded, so of course the style would have changed.

Yes I was totally on board with CF and I was looking forward to what they could do after Pandemonium.I saw the album in the shop and was totally put off by the band photo on the cover.Neverless I bought it and tried to play it over the next few weeks.Then it went to the back of the pile and eventually disappeared.It may be easier to review it now and defend it but back then it was too much of a left turn

I'm a huge Celtic Frost fan *all the way back to the Hellhammer days. I actually consider Vanity/nemesis to be their worst album , a little bit too on the "try hard" scale. Cold Lake is a remix and remaster away from sounding really good, too bad Tom will never touch it again. I quite like the album.

Go listen to this and listen to Vanity/Nemesis. They just need to remix it, I've been saying it ever since it came out. Oliver Amberg's leads are way too loud(not to mention they sucked). I'm fine with the lyrics. And they had female vocals come in like that on a few things. Yeah, they were trying to look Glam at the time, they should have stuck with the leather and spikes. Actually, what they should have done is brought in Quorthon from Bathory since he never had a full band - that would have been awesome.

Funny you mention that it sounded like the band "was not there". Truthfully, Tom was absent for much of the album's conception. He just let the band do pretty much whatever they wanted. He showed little if any interest, because there was still much to recover from during the Pandemonium sessions. So yeah, its a very disjointed affair.

I would actually go as far as to say Cold Lake is so-bad-it's-good in that its a horribly miscalculated album that is a hilarious skeleton in the closet for the band. The funny thing is, not one of CFs albums sound even close to similar to each other, with the exception of maybe Morbid Tales and To Mega Therion, and even then, they're different styles.

Warrior was in love at the time Martin had left again after the fiasco in Florida they went broke on Pandemonium tour and broke up in Florida. Cold Lake was ok BUt yes it doesnt belong in the pantheon of the other heavy lps. still wasnt that bad. Read Tom Warriors book Morbid tales and you can see why this was released.

Glam metal has Melodic shredders but the roots doesn't fit but it's still good to pay attention how great are their guitar players. You know George Lynch, Jack e lee and Mick Mars. They can be brutal sometimes but not every hair ass metal band. Twisted sister and wasp are the only 80s metal bands that are more evolutionary than any glam metal band. Also Phil Anselmo debut era album power metal album it's way better and heavier than previous three albums. They sounded more metal in the late 80s until early 00s.

phil never was Glam... Pantera was deritative from Priest and Van halen first .. with melodic def leppardish track here and there .. and just with Perms and tight pants .. like Most bands at the time . thrash influence and proto future pantera show already in project in the jungle . i am the night was thrashier and groovier in the riffs and drums . then Phil came out .. phil was very Rob halford influenced .. so saying Its glam because its high singing ... it just a fuckin lack of culture . this type of vocals was used since Deep Purple , Led zeppelin , and Uriah heep .. then Scorpions ( in the 70's :) when they were Heavy ) , Lucifer friends .. Priest .. whitesnake ( if you re american you probably dont know that it wasnt just 1987 .. there was 8 records before that in a Heavy blues with metal and hard rock edge along with a solid soul groove on it , and even jazz rock influenced demonstration :) especially in 1978's Trouble which is probably my favorite studio album ) so if i follow your com .. all this is glam as well ? i dont fuckin understand why when it comes to Pantera , People put glam on it when it was in the heritage of theses 70's bands .. the glam label is a legend for Pantera . even denied by the band in 1986 interview . and Power metal is a fuckin killer album .. in league with Priest , Metal church , Racer X , sanctuary and so on .. since when a glam band play Power metal , Over and out , Death trap ... and you know what theses songs were played on the 1990, even in 1991 .. in the live set . this is fuckin awesome metal.. end of story . also have you seen Pictures of Slayer and Overkill in 1982? this like New york dolls meetd bad alice cooper .. almost glammer than Pantera ever was in the look . ... Glammer than Wasp ever was . Wasp was never a glam band . it was a Balls out heavy metal with rock n roll edges herited from the 70's and also Shock rock theatrics . they were way heavier and bad ass than others L.A bands ( even blackie came from new york in fact ..so the tough attitude came also by that ) but lumped with them because as Typical 80's metal fan and stuff... you dont know where Put wasp on .. they werent in the glam scene .. and they werent in the thrash scene even they bring something in that sense in the demos could play on that territory if they wanted . and most important they were before as ground work than theses 2 scenes . Wasp is an older band than people realize . when then first came out they were horrific .. well where did you see that wearing Saw blades ,raw meat , blood , spikes and Torturing a chick on a rack was Glam ? be coherent please ! and i dont talk about just the 1984 s debut album but the b sides before that , and Demos .. and in the demos... its fuckin heaaavy .. its evil . its also Speed and thrashy stuff as well.. beffffooore metallica .. befooore slayer and more evil than them . and blackie vocal screams are more like blue print of black metal than anything . man .. even the look .. if you notice .. a lot of death metal bands after took from them .. etc.. more than Venom ever did . lets back a little more . the first Version of Wasp was called Sister . SIster was a crude version of wasp . Sister was one of the band pushing the Corpse paint stuff , They were one of the first to wore leather and Spikes .. and They were the fuckin first band to put the pentagram as symbol in logo and back drop . the music was heavy , and vocals as well of course . blackie used to be on fire as stage act , and eat Live worms as well . and For finish Sister was in 1976 to 1978... Venom wasnt there, Hellhammer wasnt there , Bathory wasnt there , Slayer wasnt there , Possessed wasnt there , Mercyful fate wasnt there while beign there for the reason they were separated in 2 bands as Brats in one hand and Black rose on the other ... so Blackie Paved the way for what most here re listening ... long before your bands came out .. i dont understand how people can confuse theses contributions while lumping Wasp with the glam bands .. just stupid .

Dude, "Into The Pandemonium" has 3 good songs, the rest of it is shit. "Cold Lake" has far better material. Tom needs to go on Abilify and whatever psyche meds they pair it with for him and remix Cold Lake. The problem was the guys thst owned NOISE records wanted a more commercial sound. Look ip Cold Lake Demo's. Those fucking kick ass. They peaked with "Tragic Serenades" and then went experimental.
