Celtic Frost : Danse Macabre : 5CD Deluxe Box Set Review
Extreme metal band Celtic Frost, lead by guitarist Thomas Gabriel Fisher (aka Thomas G Warrior), were formed in the early 80s from the ashes of Hellhammer. Originally a mix of thrash and black metal, later material would mix other more experimental threads (gothic, for example).
Here, BMG do a fine job on their early material, and well packaged it is too.
Their first two albums, To Mega Therion and Into The Pandemonium, are widely considered classics of the period and genre, and have proven very influential. Third album Cold Lake took a different direction and although I quite like it, it if oft considered too different and one that the band’s record labels now overlook the existence of.
This box is really an early years compilation, with 5 CDs each in gatefold card sleeves (some with an insert too), thick booklet and poster and more. And on first feel, it is solid, a wonderful package.
First up is the 1984 Morbid Tales, an EP or mini LP depending on which edition you got at the time. The release here has most (but I don’t think all) of the various edition tracks, and the intro is damn scary (think horror film) before the trash comes in. It is intense, blistering, but as you’d expect from such a debut it’s still a little rough’n’ready in places. Warrior’s presentation a mix of rough, solid, power and attitude a good blend that suits the music perfectly. Visions Of Mortality features a pace change or two in the song, Dethroned Emperor features touches of Sabbath-esque doom and chunky thrash, a very enjoyable song.
The second disc is the Emperor’s Return EP/mini album and another solid release. Seven tracks (including a bonus), there’s a hint of Venom (only more cohesive). Lots to enjoy here,
Third disc is the debut full album proper, To Mega Therion, and both at the time and retrospectively, considered a black metal landmark. Suitably dark and aggressive. The band here consist of bassist Dominic Steiner and drummer Reed St Mark, alongside Warrior. Bombastic at every level. Black and Death metal with occasional hints of doom and ambient and strong lyrics too, an intelligent and professional touch that put Celtic Frost above many at the time. From the debut EP, the band were definitely growing.
1987’s Into The Pandemonium is a branch out for the band, more Avant Garde, taking in classic rock, symphonic metal and lyrics from classical sources (Bronte poems and Apollo samples, for example).
What made this album, and at the time Celtic Frost too, was Warrior’s ability to think outside the box, making many of their contemporaries look one dimensional.
The last disc, Grave Hill Bunker Rehearsals, features 4 tracks recorded in 1984, demos that show work in progress. Essential for the fan. It take in the band’s first two albums, 2 EPs, plenty of bonus tracks and a 5th disc of demos, well annotated.
The package is excellent, with the card sleeves being getafold, the odd insert or two. The booklet is very comprehensive and well worth a read. There may well be a track or two missing, but this box is very good and far more complete than some boxes I’ve seen. And a very tidy reminder of just how good this period of Celtic Frost was. Lovely. Great review Phil. I totally agree with you as I grew up listening to Celtic Frost, I could see how all of my friends at the time did not like Into The Pandemonium. I first got it on cassette and immediately loved it. That version included Tristesses De La Lune, but not the "regular" version Sorrows Of The Moon. I am a huge Celtic Frost fan, so I have all those great albums in different versions, most recently the boxset you reviewed, only on glow-in-the-dark vinyl. Glad to see your appreciation for Celtic Frost! Keep up the good work with those fantastic reviews!

This looks awesome. Alas, the re-issued their early Albums somewhat recently. I wanna say about five years ago. They came in this packages that look like little Hardcover Books. The EP was included on MORBID TALES. Not sure if all the stuff from the Demo CD is covered on those, but that's not enough for another upgrade so close to the last. Thanks for the video.

Hi Robert, thank you for watching. That is the lens of time working isn't it. Back in the mid 80s I was not ready for bands like Metallica or Opeth etc. Now they are just one of the different flavours of rock music. Phil

@@NowSpinningMagazine I had a listen to Into The Pandemonium and it's terrific. It's not everyday you get a song set to poems by Emilie Brontë or Beaudelaire (in French and English). I could hear the Dead Can Dance influence on the Middle Eastern sounding track and even guitar tones like The Cure in a later track. They really pushed the boat out on this one!

@@NowSpinningMagazine It’s ok Phil! I brought the vinyl version of Celtic Frost’s “Danse Macabre” because my vinyl of C.Frost from 80s has been worn out from overplay!🤣🤣🤣 It’s really interesting because when I brought “Into the Pandemonium “ in 1987, Most thrash metal fans hated it but I loved it! I remember “Metal Forces” magazine really tearing it apart! But for me , it was mind blowing-I just loved the fusion of Heavy Metal and Gothic Rock!!! Through listening to that album , I got into bands such as Christian Death and Dead Can Dance , which I can listen to along side Iron Maiden & Slayer! Also it opened the door for future bands such as Paradise Lost, Type o Negative & Lacuna Coil in the 1990s. I enjoyed your review , so nice one Phil!!!

I might have to grab this. I've never really listened to Celtic Frost. A lot of bands I like were influenced to them, but I've just never been a huge black metal guy. But I hear they've got a Motörhead influence to their sound? If so, then I'm interested.
@NowSpinningMagazine
@NowSpinningMagazine Год назад
Hi Nick, thank you for watching. Their image certainly makes them look like they hang out on the woods somewhere in Norway but they are not really black metal. The first album is very close to the New Wave of British Heavy Metal and there are elements of Motorhead for sure. For such young guys hidden away in Switzerland they certainly influenced the whole Thrash Metal Scene. Phil

However, next month when I cover The Chic Organisation, Miles Davies, Colin Towns will be another surprise. My musical tastes are very broad and this channel will never be constrained by genres.
