Perhaps Cold Lake might be viewed in a different light had the band's image not changed so drastically during that period .. I happen to like Cold Lake, and I think a lot of people listen to those songs with their eyes .. Tom is great and very honest and sincere, and this interview is a pleasure to listen to - and immediately after his comments on Cold Lake, Tom says that Celtic Frost was an "experimental band" - and there should be no shame in doing something that is NO expected by the majority of fans - and in 1988, Cold Lake was certainly NOT what fans saw coming .. and isn;t that part of being a an artist, just sort of throwing caution to the wind and doing what you feel at that moment in time ? ... In disowning the album, Tom is probably bringing even more attention to it, and ironically, keeping it alive ..
@RautaMetal
@RautaMetal 2 года назад
I agree about what you said about Cold Lake. It surely was a brave jump at the time. I think my friend described it well: "It's what you'd expect from a metal artist when he's doing an album with his zipper open". It's not bad as such, but it certainly doesn't fit CF's bill IMO. It was something that one might expect as a side-project. It could have evolved into something different, given with enough time, but compared to other CF albums, it's imo the worst.

When Thomas was speaking about Martin Ain I could see that his voice was breaking, as if he was containing his emotions about the topic. Shit....even I felt sad when he was talking about him. I totally agree with him when he said Celtic Frost has to remain over due to Martin Ain's death. Thomas can create any band or recreate a band like Hellhammer and he'll still be Thomas G. Warrior, but Martin Ain is Celtic Frost and that cannot be recreated. Is like Slayer in my opinion, Slayer will always be Tom Araya, Kerry King, Dave Lombardo and Jeff Hanneman, and yeah....Paul Bostaph. But when Jeff died, Slayer died. Even when Gary Holt took the spot of Jeff, Slayer still was dead. So the same thing is with Celtic Frost.

SAME regarding BURTON and 'Tallica. Ulrich back then said, Cliff was Metallica's soul. He said the ONLY ever important thing to be said about his band. EDIT: soul was about his music knowledge and contribution he brought from it. Hippies parents and music lesson he had. !¡ His bells jeans were his soul incarnated ¡!
@nephrenqayin254
@nephrenqayin254 2 года назад
@@buddhafx5973 You nailed it. Of course Jason Newsted was terrific BUT Burton was the essence of the band. Trujillo on the other hand he's fantastic....with SUICIDAL TENDENCIES and INFECTIOUS GROOVES because his style fits perfectly in those bands. When he played for Ozzy he was good but in my opinion he didn't fit there, neither with Metallica. But again it's my opinion.
@buddhafx5973
@buddhafx5973 2 года назад
@@nephrenqayin254 Thank for your reply and feel. Appreciated. Just to be sure, cuz you did comparison with Newsted and Robert, but does not need to be done. Being Metallica's soul was about his music knowledge he brought to them and musical visions he had from it. From that had been underlined, hippies parents and having had classical music classes, piano. Personnal note, I was a teen in 86, I felt something just from his look, bells jeans and music credits, (orion), that Metallica would never ever be the "same", like dying. Depth is nothing that have ever been again with this band. They just can't. Just good at , "hey hey hey". My feeling. I've always watched em from a distance ever since. Being on a words ride. All complaints about St Anger's snair, people complaining what happenned to their studio talent with Bob Rock. That they missed it. Nah not at all, they nailed it, it was about anger AND the lil secret to my view given that they have admiditly stolen so many riffs and things..... The secret about the snair sound IS, to me, conciously or not to them, from their great friend Pushead and his own legendary band SEPTIC DEATH and his legendary album NOW THAT I HAVE.... My 2 things I've talked here, Burton being the bands souls out from Ulrich mouth and my personnal explaination about St Angers snair ARE the only 2 important things ever to be said about this band. Oh, btw, talking about bands with a soul, I'm from Jonquière, VOIVOD! I've seen their first 4 gigs there as a teen. High school twice, Mont Jacob and Place Nikitoutagan were Piggys statue is supposed to be implemented. Cheers and peace out!

Regarding Cold Lake , putting aside the glam image and the Cherry Orchards video , it's just a generic late eighties metal album , no better or worse than hundreds of others from that period . Which in itself is a travesty for a band of Celtic Frost's unique vision and originality. And I am sure Tom feels that way about it. Tom remains a fascinating character , one of the few rock musicians worth listening to .

I have to disagree with Tom about being insignificant. I do completely understand what he’s saying and it’s extremely noble and humble, which he always seems to be BUT having said that. There are many of us that were drawn to this kind of music and imagery that follows it, not because it was a phase or something simply sound cool, it was because it resonated in our soul and for some, especially at a young age that had some really fucked things going on at home or depression, being an outcast etc, there was escape in the darkness and fire the Metal lies in. To hear and breathe this music and be filled with strength and fearlessness to continue. That is no insignificant thing. If his music helped one fan get by that would be incredible but I am sure it’s many of us. Hail CF.

@@Forferdelse666 If you've listened to Tom's early and later Interviews(i'm sure that you have) you'll realize that he aimed for a style and sound like on Mono/Eparistera/Melana albums. I adore MT, TMT but i think they really reached their peak on Mono. That was the album wanted to write since day one. Diverse, interesting, innovative, crushingly heavy, dark. It captured the essence of the band. Maybe i'm going a bit in depth here but i never realized any of this when i discovered them. All i knew that they were hugely influential. Years later did i start to really appreciate them. Hellhammer/CF/Triptykon is a single band for me. Due to unfortunate circumstances had to change their name. Tom is one of the greatest human beings i've ever read about with a background similar to mine. I'd probably faint if i meet him cos he's one of the people i look up to the most. I'd pay good money if Tom could re-record the Hellhammer songs under the Triptykon name.

I have always loved Celtic Frost and Hellhammer since I was in middle and high school. Got into Triptykon after graduating. Tom Gabriel Warrior is a legend.

It's brilliant how comfortable Tom seems talking to you listening/answering questions it's like talking to a old friend. I always thought he seemed a very privet unapproachable person.

I'm not one for crying into my nostalgia flakes (I'm only 33 lol), but I love how different each band sounded before "the standard" was established. Things that would be considered "wrong", by modern production standards for example, really made for some unique and diverse listening.

@@piotrb8434 yes all the new records by the old bands such as destruction and kreator, even if there are good songs in there , they sound horrible because of the modern production

Bro is so humble, I served my country in the military and I do background investigations for national security and the world would be the exact same place if I was never here. Celtic Frost, changed my life when I heard them. I just thought wow! What the fuck was that. I thought it was special.

Great interview man!! I unexpectedly got to meet Tom before a Triptykon show in Chicago, IL back in Oct 2010. After getting Tom to sign my Triptykon 'Shatter' cd, I got to tell him that the song 'Winter' from the awesome Celtic Frost 'Monothiest' album was my favorite classical music piece...Tom shakes my hand, leans towards me, and said "Thank you very much" with such a deep sincerity and appreciation (will never forget it). I am a huge Triptykon fan and I also got to see Celtic Frost twice in 2007 in Chicago (one show as headliners and the other opening for Type O Negative). -Devon

Being 55-56 myself, I got Cold Lake brand new and had to adjust big-time, after Pandemonium, I found things to like having to live with it because it still is Celtic Frost to my ears, at the time, Tom interviewed said he was influenced by the Beatles and enjoyed some of that late 80s Hair Metal but the tone was too light, he said as well, the band took itself too seriously and he wanted to tone things back in that respect, I can understand the scene having some effect as Grunge made all too clear

Saw Celtic Frost in Atlanta in the summer of 1986 at the 688 club with the original lineup. There was about 20 people there. Voi Vod opened. A show I’ll never forget.
