The Celtic languages are a group of related languages descended from Proto-Celtic, or "Common Celtic"; a branch of the greater Indo-European language family.The term "Celtic" was first used to describe this language group by Edward Lhuyd in 1707,following Paul-Yves Pezron who had already made the explicit link between the Celts described by classical writers and the Welsh and Breton languages.
Modern Celtic languages are mostly spoken on the north-western edge of Europe, notably in Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Brittany, Cornwall, and the Isle of Man. There are also a substantial number of Welsh speakers in the Patagonia area of Argentina and some speakers of Scottish Gaelic on Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia. Some people speak Celtic languages in the other Celtic diaspora areas of the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.In all these areas, the Celtic languages are now only spoken by minorities though there are continuing efforts at revitalisation. Welsh is the only Celtic language not classified as "endangered" by UNESCO.
During the 1st millennium BC, they were spoken across much of Europe, in the Iberian Peninsula, from the Atlantic and North Sea coastlines, up to the Rhine valley and down the Danube valley to the Black Sea, the northern Balkan Peninsula and in central Asia Minor. The spread to Cape Breton and Patagonia occurred in modern times.

Celtic languages arrived in Britain in the late Bronze Age (c.1000 BC) in a large scale migration from France, according to a recent study from Harvard. Not during the Iron Age as previously thought.
@saguntum-iberian-greekkons7014
So they would be more recent?

@@saguntum-iberian-greekkons7014 no, more ancient. Bronze Age was before the Iron Age.

This theory is still flawed in my opinion, as Celtic place name density correlates strongly with Bell Beaker ancestry, iconic aspects of Celtic culture considered unique to continental Europe according to the Hallstatt and Celtic from Gaul theories have been found in Britain before they appear in many areas of Europe, there is no break in the archeological record with this supposed arrival of the Celts in the late bronze age (unlike the Romans and Saxons, which left clear changes), and most of all there is no evidence of an Indo-European substrate language in the Celtic languages in the British Isles, but there is a lot of evidence of non-Indo-European loan words in Celtic, exactly what one would expect if Celts were interacting with a non-IE group in the British Isles. According to all available evidence, I believe the strongest theory is that Celts are, in fact, the Western Bell Beakers, and thus Celtic language and culture arrived in Britain and Ireland when the Beakers did, about 4500 years ago during the Early Bronze Age. The aforementioned arrival of Celtic Gauls into Britain was an event with a small genetic impact (less than 10% population turnover), and did not even exceed the southern half of modern day England. For non-Celtic Bell Beakers to have been inhabiting all of Britain and Ireland, and then consequently dropping their entire culture and language in favor of adopting a foreign one that invaded their southern neighbors, all the while leaving no trace of their previous culture linguistically or archeologically, is exceptionally hard to believe. I would strongly encourage you to do your own research on this topic and validate what I am saying.

@@brigantiasmemerepository6439Hallstaat Culture more likely spread P-Celtic languages with Q-Celtic already being present in Britain and Ireland. The migration from Gaul was actually more of an exchange that happened over around 500 years, only in Southern Britain, which could of already spoke Celtic in a more archaic Q form, but adjusted to P-Celtic through migration, trade, and cultural exchange with Gaul. The problem with linking Celtic to the Bell Beakers is that the Celtic languages are too similar for Proto-Celtic to have been spoken before 1500 BC. The Bell Beaker cultural complex is around 1000 years older than Proto-Celtic. Likely, proto-Celtic developed from western dialects descended form the Indo-European branch of the Bell Beakers, which may of been Proto-Italo-Celtic or possibly even older than that. It likely spread through trade and cultural contact during the Atlantic Bronze Age and Urnfield Culture. My hypothesis is that it developed in the Atlantic Bronze Age as Q-Celtic as an evolved continuation of Western Bell Beaker dialects that remained in contact with each other and some Urnfield groups also adopted it through contact with the Atlantic Bronze Age, already speaking a similar Bell Beaker derived language, and formed P-Celtic. They then spread P-Celtic back to their already Q-Celtic neighbors in the Hallstaat Culture.

@@peasharaly Oh, that's pretty dismal. This beautiful language deserves much better & brighter future. If I'm not wrong such cases are seen in multiple countries where central governments of those nations try to suppress regional languages in an attempt to homogenise their country. This is intended to suppress the differences & the potential separatism, like suppression of non-Spanish languages like Catalan, Aragonese, Basque etc in Spain, Sardinian, Ligurian, Venetian etc in Italy and Azerbaijani, Circassian, Mandaean etc in Iran. But what they seem to forget is, that the regional diversity is the most exquisite facet of their cultural & linguistic heritage. By assisting these regional languages they would actually be strengthening the roots of their own nation. Plus, promoting regional languages does not necessarily cause separatism (for instance in India & South Africa regional languages are taken pretty seriously & yet they didn't led to any separatist movements). This proves that linguistic & regional diversity and stability of a country can go hand in hand. In fact, atrocities on a regional language itself lead to anti government sentiments and separatism, like what happened in Catalonia. So, to deny the due status to a regional languages for the fear of separatism is pretty redundant of a thinking!! Let's hope that the political scenary changes for Breton before it's too late!! Nevertheless, I'm very positive that the spirit of local speakers won't let their beautiful parlance vanish! Thanks for your answer:)

Sounds similar to stories of Welsh children learning English at school. If the spoke Welsh they would get spanked, put in the corner, and made to wear a "Welsh Not" hat. The powers that be have been trying to eliminate Celtic culture for centuries, but they can go jump off a bridge: Celtic language and culture is much older than French, English, Spanish, and Germanic. I speak irish fluently and hopefully with the rise in popularity of education through irish the numbers will rise but the government definitely could be doing more and the education system and historical brain washing leave a lot of irish people reluctant to learn the language. People often are reluctant to try transition to an irish first country as the brainwashing makes them think wed be at a disadvantage even though the other non englishing speaking countries are doing fine

The Celts and their ancestors conquered the continent of Europe during the bronze age and partially replaced the common culture that existed there prior. The fact that their cousin cultures Italic and Germanic replaced them shouldn't bother you since they would have probably done the same If they could. Given that, the Celtic culture that exists now should be conserved as much as possible and even possible revivals.
@palepilgrim1174
@palepilgrim1174 4 года назад
Agree 100% with conservation, but revivals absolutely not. If the people want to willingly adopt through revival an old ethnic identity that used to exist there, all the more power to them, seems silly to me but you're free to do as you wish. Just don't claim to belong to a people you don't actually belong to. Base requirement for being a Celt is speaking a Celtic language, and not just knowing a few words and phrases, speaking it to native level and preferably it being your native or main/daily language. I'm from Scotland and have no sense of belonging or identity with Celts and their culture despite people constantly trying to impress this upon me. I would consider myself just English/West Germanic and associate more with the history of those peoples instead as my language and name is English.

The Celtic languages maybe are at dificult times, but big part of world's culture still have a lot of traits. One of the most important is music. But the very amazing thing is the Celtic DNA. This, with the Celtic spirit, will never die. To restore the Celtic traits we should unite all Celtic Nations. And is not only about languages. Languages are too much essential and guide a entire people, but every Celtic trait must be saved!

I'd like to add that the Reintegration of Galician-Portuguese still considers itself as a Celtic language because of the preservation of the Celtic words that make up the language today. The revival of the language has to do with a huge pervasion of the Celtic tradition that is found only in areas of Galicia, Austrias, and the north of Portugal (which still preserves Galician from the 1500's)

No, it has to be from the West, the Gallaecians (not all) left Hispania and went north. Another tribe who did that but that we don't know its real language is the Silures (Silures tribe) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silures, which tacitus says they looked very Spaniards. Also, have you realized the similarity of the names: Galleiga and Gael? Especially if you say it in the authentic version: Gallaic

The Rigveda speaks of a tribe of red haired people who lived in the north(?) some 4000 years ago. The Drsyu/Drhyu, literally meaning the seers. Many scholars suggest that it could be the Druids of the Celts. Could it be the Druids integrated into Celtic society and became a part of them when they flourished in 500BCE.

Druid means "very wise" in celtic :"Dru-Wid" (cf english : "True-wise" of celtic origin). There were too many changes between Proto-indo-european and the proto celtic to refer to those people as the Drsyu (it looks like something of a "wood" people judging by the allure of the word though, therefore probably lanciers, the spear (the "wood" here) being the ultimate weapon of choice of the indo-european warrior across nearly all its families).

Hi guys, maybe some interesting facts about the name Celtic. Serbs(Slavic people) had their own cyrillic alphabet written first on wood and then on stones(2000-5000 BC). Serbs say about Celtics, those who go from one place to another after food, they say SELE or SELITI , what means migrate. Always on migration. So the they gave their name SELTI, in English language later it became CELTIC.

A question about the French as Celtic: It is agreed that the Bretons are mostly Celtic, but what about the Normans? Were the people who lived in Normandy before Rollo and the Vikings Celtic, and thus the people of Normandy mixed Celtic and Scandinavian? I am descended from both Normans who invaded England in 1066 and Normans who settled in Quebec circa 1665.
@association3cm675
@association3cm675 2 года назад
Well, the Normans didn't have their own Celtic language, but due to the fact that Norse settlers were only the majority in the Cotentin peninsula, most of the population of Normandy was, and still pretty much is a geneticaly mostly Celtic people speaking a Latin language. Now I don't know who of the French-learning Scandinavians and French-speaking peasants influenced the other's speech, but Norman French is one of the closest dialects to the standard variety, based on the Paris dialect : because of that, I like to imagine that Rollo learned the language of the capital from his wife, passing it to everyone of his subjects ! If you are interested in pre-Norse Normandy, it was part of an area the early Franks called Neustria, so that might be your best go. I hope I was able to help, and sorry if there are any spelling mistakes.

The Belgian Celts spoke a P celtic language very similar to southern Brythonnic. 7 Belgian Celtic tribes, certainly those of the sea area and a little bit lower lived of both sides of the channel. Fisher men who came over in 3 and more waves. Settled on the island of white, founded the city of Winchester and lived north of the island of white, South-Hampton and further and in south-east England. Those Belgian Celts are one of the sources of the common Brythonnic language. Pro Celts from Belgica wich was much bigger then it is now and ohter Belgian Celts from another time period. 9 procent the people living north of the Island of White have Belgian Celtic DNA. Franks came from the middle east of the Netherland for the rich farming land and mixed with the Belgian Celts in the north, this mix gives us the Fleming. Flemings have a connection to the Belgian Celtic tribes in the UK and to a lot people in parts of the Netherlands. Salian Franks. In the south of big Belgica lived more Belgian Alpino Celts. The influence of the Romans in Wallonië is bigger then in the norht of Belgium, but the story is more complicated. There is a certain DN connection between people of Belgian Celtic origin anywhere in the world. In the USA and other parts of the world. The language border with the French speaking world is the border with the Roman Empire. We fought against the Germans, Romans, Spaniards, French, Moslims.... Brexit will not stand for a long time because of the connection between those Belgian Celts from the sea of both sides of the channel. They traded with each other since more then 3000 BC. Belgianc Celts and Britons moved further to Wales when the Anglo-Saxions came and pushed them further to the west of UK and north-west in the uk. Do the DNA test to see how much Belgian Celtic DNA you'll still have.

Belgica, was much bigger then it is now and counted 12 Belgian Celtic tribes. Proto celts from Belgica and later other waves of Belgian Celts like the Atrebates, Nervii and Morini crossed the channel. The Belgian Celtic language was like Southern Brythonnic. Brythonnic languages came from old Belgica. The Gauls are another group of Celts like in France. Their language is another Celtic language.

You made a mistake. In Hispania, there were three native groups: Celts, Celtiberians and Iberians, not just Celtiberians. You make a mistake by calling Celts of Iberia Celtiberians, since is important to make a difference. Celts lived in the Central-North areas and made the Mayority of the Celtic Peoples of Iberia, while the Celtiberians (just some few of the Celtic tribes), that lived mostly in the center-east, were a mixed group distinct from the celts of the rest of Iberia. Celtiberians were celtic ethnically but with many influences from the most advanced Iberian tribes living nearby who were their neighbors. Iberians lived in the Mediterranean Coast on the East and South.

You should note that this progression is based on an old outdated theory of Celtic migration. The celts from the west theory is the newer theory that is gaining scholarly momentum at the moment, and explains how the celtiberians have little in common with other celts, as well as the lack of genetic change in the British isles in the supposed period in which the Celtic migration took place. It is also supported by the fact that Tartessian (one of the older Celtic languages) is found in south west Iberia, and not Central Europe. I appreciate your effort in making this visual, but you should do a part two based on the more likely theory.
@hersirivarr1236
@hersirivarr1236 4 года назад
@Owen Cradoc The current theories of Celtic expansion assume that the Hallstatt culture (from 700 BCE onwards) was the culture to spread the Celtic languages, because the Hallstatt Culture is associated with typically Celtic material culture. However, Indo-European people had been living in Britain and Iberia from 2200 BCE, and those early Indo-Europeans could have spoken either proto-Celtic, proto-Italo-Celtic, proto-Lusatanian e.c.t. We just don't know. The spread of the Hallstatt culture had almost no genetic impact on the pre-existing Indo-European cultures of western Europe, which casts doubt on the idea it was a population change rather than just a technology change. For example, when the Celts expanded into eastern Europe they basically wiped out the west Dacians, but nothing like this happened with the Hallstatt Culture. One thing to note though is that all the populations native to the British Isles can trace most of the genetic ancestry to the northernmost Bell Beakers. In 2200 BCE, 90% of Ireland's and Britain's population was replaced by Bell Beaker invaders from the Netherlands. Those Netherlanders are closely related to the modern north French, Germans, Dutch, Belgians and Scandinavians. Those Bell Beakers either already spoke Celtic or were Celticised later on.

One thing I wonder is, why did the Celts not conquer north Africa? I mean, the Vandals almost blitzkrieged north Africa during the Fall of Rome. So European tribes could do it.
