Her voice is beautiful, and so is the Irish language. Unfortunately she does not speak it, and the pronunciation here is way off. Check out Clannad's version for the correct pronunciation (though the music is as good here :) )
@@jonasholmqvist5231 She does speak irish. Not as a native speaker though. She's singing in the Connamara dialect of irish, the dialect that's taught in schools since the 1960s. Clannad are native speakers and sing in their native Donegal dialect.
@@jonasholmqvist5231From yesterday. A little explanation of irish ( gaeilge ) dialects. There are basically 3 dialects of irish based on the 3 gaeltacht areas. A gaeltacht is a part of the country where irish is the main spoken language ( you probably know that ;-) ) Ulster irish based in the Donegal Gaeltacht including Gweedore where Clannad is from. It is distinguished by having very soft consonants. Munster irish based in the Kerry/Cork Gaeltacht distinguished by very hard consonants. Connacht irish based in Galway/Connamara somewhere between the two. There are also some other differences between the three as with dialects of any language. So to take a simple example the irish word for god is Dé. In Donegal irish it would be pronounced "J'ay" and in Kerry irish "D'ay". Although there is no symbol J in irish. Irish only has 18 symbols, so no J K Q V W X Y Z but that's another story. In the late 1950s early 1960s the Dept. of Education decided to standardise irish for teaching purposes in schools. So they choose the Connacht dialect as the one to be taught in schools. They also got rid of the old irish alphabet and replaced it with an angelized one. This made it easier for business, typing etc. So anybody who learned irish at school essentially speaks/sings with the Connemara dialect. But people who are native speakers speak with their own dialect. Now that's my good deed for the day ;-)
@@amydyer9764 actually, it pre dates the troubles (between the Govt of the UK , Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland - for those who may not know what "The Troubles" were). It's sung in the old Irish language, sometimes known as Gaelic, and sort of adopted by Northern Ireland, groups such as the IRA, and the version by Clannad made into a music video. The piece was also the theme to "Harry's Game" a UK TV series based on the book by the same name, i believe, about "the troubles".
wow, mystical celtic magic,an instrument embodied in a voice, a gift, pure as water, enigmatic in it's source, draws you into a lull, a grace, a place where strife and troubles disappear, this is a glimpse of the divine......
I found this beautiful music in 2005. For two combat deployments, this was one album that helped drift off to sleep. It was special each time to leave the barren desert and land in Shannon, Ireland. Love this album and this lineup.
When I hear this, I am literally transported back in time 500, 600, 800 years to Ireland and I can feel what it must have been like for my ancestors living, loving, fighting and trying to exist there. I know it sounds weird, but it makes me feel this.
Orla has the most mystic voice out of all the Celtic Woman. I was SO sad when she came to my town and I couldn't see her.... =( She's my favorite former member!
i share your sentiments..haunting..beautiful..moving..and dare i say..very celtic-esque..indeed..i feel orla is perhaps the most celtic sounding of all the celtic women performers..cheers
this song is epic!! i caught a lot of flak and friends laughed at me for having this CD in my car but its well worth after your ears yield a few voices and a violin from heaven!!! its in my blood
can't decide whether i prefer the orig Clannad version of this song or Orla's. She has SUCH a lovely voice, and although the current lineup of CW is just fantastic, with some wonderfully talented ladies, the absence of her haunting vocals is greatly missed. Have checked out some of her solo work since leaving CW and she has a great album out so there are still more wonderful videos out from her :-)
Orla's voice is just enchanting,it makes you want to just stop whatever you're doing & just listen & serenade in her song. You just don't want the song to ever stop playing. However sadly, all good things must come to an end.
Anyone else here from all these youtubers putting adult swim bumps set to a lo fi version of this song in their videos? Currently FUNKe, mandalore gaming, noodle and Leon Massey, but I feel like more people are going to start doing it.
I saw on Wiki that this song first became really popular in the US when it appeared in a scene from Patriot Games. The ironic aspect is that in the scene the leader of an Ultra Violent Rogue Cell of the Provisional IRA is totally zoning out to a music video of this song - tranquil as can be. Then a minute later he is blowing away another Provisional IRA soldier with a shotgun.
@Bruce99100 "Harry's Game" is a hit song by the Irish group Clannad. It was released in 1982 and served as the main track from their album Magical Ring. However, the song was initially written for a Yorkshire Television production called Harry's Game, which depicted The Troubles in Northern Ireland.
English Translation I will go east and go west From whence came The moon and the sun Follow the day follow the day Follow the day follow the day The moon and the sun will go And the young man with his reputation behind him Follow the day follow the day Follow the day follow the day Follow the day follow the day Follow the day follow the day I will go wherever he came from The young man with his reputation behind him Follow the day follow the day Follow the day follow the day
