The coaching series is BACK and this week we're delighted to welcome in, Boston Celtics Head Coach, Joe Mazzulla. Joe was gracious enough to give us an hour of his time to cover all sorts of things. So without further ado, let's get into it.
Topics include: JJ's thoughts on the tier 1 teams in The NBA including The Boston Celtics, Los Angeles Lakers and more, then Joe joins us to talk through his sudden rise to becoming head coach of The Celtics, his recruitment of JJ to join his coaching staff, what he did to lead his team through the firing of Ime Udoka last season, how an introvert handles being a head coach, his D2 coaching journey and how he broke into the NBA, learning from his mistakes and building relationships with players, what he learned about last NBA season, his strategy of not calling timeouts at pivotal moments last season, teaching Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, integrating Kristaps Porzingis into the offense, reacting to The Milwaukee Bucks having both Damian Lillard and Giannis Antetokounmpo, his mindset heading into this upcoming NBA season and what he learned from his father and how he applies it to coaching.
Subscribe to The Old Man and The Three podcast w/ JJ Redick (ESPN / First Take) and Tommy Alter RU-vid channel today for more NBA analysis, player interviews and highlights.

As a long time Boston fan, so happy Brad didn’t listen to the locals and held onto Joe. He was put in a tough situation last year, granted great team but absolutely thrown in the deep end with zero prep. Excited for 2024! JJ, it would be a DREAM to have you on the C’s coaching staff! Coming back to this video after the Celtics won the championship starts putting things into place. What Mazzulla was able to do with this team was amazing: he not only instilled this sense of determination & dedication to just winning, no matter how or who did it, I think he genuinely made all these guys into friends. Their team chemistry is off the charts & clearly everyone respects each other greatly & just wants the team to win as a whole, because they know that they’ll all be happy together. Combine that mindset with Mazzulla’s naturally & insanely analytical thought processes, this team was absolutely enhanced by this young coach. Bravo Joe, you are a model coach by which others will hopefully aspire to be like 👏👏

In my "opinion" [such as it is], Mazulla's humility is THE reason the Celtics gained perspective & gelled. LOVE the no-dribble practices & old-school fundamentals & identity. Truly, THIS Celtics team embodied the Auerbach values even the KG/Pierce/Allen teams lacked. In my mind, Bird would LOVE this TEAM [not "collection" of individuals]. It takes a Man of Character & Conviction to stay the course. Even now, people disregard Joe's CRUCIAL influence & leadership. I believe Stevens understands this man's irreplaceable influence on this TEAM [NOT collection of individuals]. This man is a credit to the NBA & biblical [immutable] VALUES. Longtime Celtics fan here: this was the most satisfying championship ever!
