Danny Colville Shows the best products that will make your fishing experience more productive. Danny Also goes over how to rig up a Tapered shot rig and affix a stemmed balsa float.
Just starting out with a center pin here in Central Pennsylvania. You really gave me the best, most in depth information about alot of the things I was confused or unsure about, really appreciate it bro!
Hey Danny! Just wanted to tell you to keep up the great work! Ive been seeing a lot of haters commenting on this vid... It was extremely helpful and I appreciate the work you have put in to this! Thanks for all the info, helping me become a better centerpinner!
Hey bud! More to have a diagonal presentation. The tapered shot rig allows you to drop your bait or raise it in the water column based on how much pressure to the reel you apply! I hope that answers your question
center pin fishing is bad ass not a whole lot of people do it out here in Washington state would love to learn how to! out here we do all out float fishing with spinning rods
does anyone know what the blue thing with the wooden ball is called that’s on the bottom of his rod? trying to get one for my dad but can’t find what they’d be called
Yeah bro as long as you are stationary...not moving in a boat at the speed of the river...you have to be able to hold you float back aka trotting. If you casting up river or moving with the current I like the inline weight method.
Do you find that after a certain distance in a float your chances of a hit decrease? Have you ever had a hit after say...30 yards? Or does it depend on the fishing hole?
As long as you depth is correct that far away you can catch fish at 100 yards away as long as you can see your float. That is why I like running deeper and holding my float back...I can cover deeper spots throughout hole by giving the float less resistance
I have had way more problems with fluorocarbon fraying than the monofilament, this was also before I learned to slobber all over it lol, I hooked a ton of steelhead up in the erie tribs I just can't keep them hooked
Thanks for all the amazing info. What was left out of the video was info about the free shrooms in that cave across the river. Did anyone investigate that?
Great video. I really learned some great stuff and I've been doing this for a little bit. And don't worry about any negative Karen's in the comments. Everybody's perfect when they're judging someone else.
The larger the float the more shot to balance it. Always use same amount of weight under the float depending on how big the float is. You match the weight
Brand new to centre pin fishing so please excuse the rookie question. When you are weighting up the float, why is it strung out and not just a cluster of shot right under the float?
The idea is that the heavier shot will bulk and the lighter shots will swing out in the current, when fishing swift water, this will allow your leader to present the bait first and make it most natural, you don't need as many as seen here I think I run maybe 8 but taper them down so they do what they need
I'm a recent convert to the "dark side"...Although I'm no pro, I've been catching a few steelhead on the Salmon River with my new centerpin setup. It's awesome to watch the guys that really know what they're doing. I've caught my share with the fly rod as well but staying connected to a "strike indicator" while mending 30 feet of fly line is a lot of work and results in more missed bites (and line wrapped around my ears). I can see where the fly guys would get annoyed with the pinners drifting 100 yards or more down stream. But just last week I saw a spey guy strolling down the middle of one of the more popular runs with a shooting head swinging flies 40 yards downstream and attacking both sides of the river. I guess the key would be to respect those around you with whatever method you choose to use to enjoy the sport. BTW, this is an awesome video for the novice just getting into centerpinning...What's better than watching your float tracking down a seam, suddenly disappearing, and jolting upstream from a take... Thanks for helping us out Danny!
Do you ever run into a issue with line twist? I basically run the same shot line setup, but I use another swivel above my float because I was always getting line twist.
@@colvilleoutfitters3290 I'm comfortable with the side cast, and the extra micro swivel doesn't seem to affect the drift so i'm going to stick to what I'm used to. Thanks for the reply tho. Maybe I'll see you on the SR this winter.
At time mostly now we have hero drifter make them. You can get all the floats you need from Colville Outfitters. Thanks. Blood run makes an awesome loafer called a seam seeker...best production float out there
Seven gram float means it can handle seven grams before sinking. So add enough lead/weight so that WITH hook, bait and tackle material the weight altogether is close to seven grams and it will float correctly. ;)
Hi Danny. I watched all ur tutorials and webinars and learned a ton. Any more webinars coming? My first centerpin setup will have to come from you. I’ll support people who spit knowledge. Screw the losers who hide behind a screen with their little D energy
I thought you did a wonderful job presenting the basics of rigging for center pin fishing. Don't let the snobs bother you. I haven't heard winers like this in years! And they were the my poop don't stink fly fishermen. Just because someone rigs different than you doesn't make either right or wrong! As long as you catch fish and enjoy what you are doing, that's all that matters. I didn't hear you say or see him keep a single fish, so the remark about center pin fishermen just keep the females for eggs is bogus. That remark paints with a very broad brush, and it's not fair to assume that is the only reason for keeping fish. Besides, the last time I checked there were regulations for the harvest of fish. Read the manual sometime! When did everybody get so snobby!?! Fishing is for everyone, not just those who can afford $600 for a rig! Even the poor guy who buys a $10 rod and reel combo at Walmart. They pay for their license too, and if snobs would come down a few notches and welcome them to the sport, some day they might be able to afford better equipment. One last thing, royalty doesn't exist in America. Grow up and teach someone if they're doing something wrong, or offensive. Don't just bitch about them and insult them! Offer them you knowledge with this type of fishing, then they'll pass it on to someone else just starting out. It was a great video, with some gorgeous fish. It's no secret these fish are here, and everyone who purchases the proper permit deserves to try their luck and catch one. Just saying.....
Drags the fish up into the mud (takes the fishes protective slime off, and suffocates their gills), pulls by the leader instead of the tail (can snap the leader easily, leaving the fish with a hook in them), removes fish from the water for a hero pose (suffocating the fish that's just fought for its life and now has mud in the gills), and then releases it telling us how you hope she goes and spawns to make babies.... if you catch and release with all your fancy gear you should carry a release net or learn to tail the fish while keeping it in the water.
@@dougfunny8334 why catch and release if you just abuse the fish/it dies? Its our duty as sport anglers to respect these beautiful fish and show future generations how to respect the fish in our videos so that theres still fish in 100 years. Numbers are dropping around the world. Youre a moron obviosly
Rarely seen anything like this, don't you have a landing net? The fish suffers from your hands and gets hurt. If you don't want to eat fish, try to unhook the fish in the water
These fish are very Hardy. Holding them for a pic doesn't hurt them. If you hug them and put them in a net that isn't made of ghost netting I could see it being a problem...but these fish can handle being slightly held for a couple seconds.
This guy catches more fish in a day then you do on your week trip, the fish is fine man, the guys who boat kings treat them so bad and they swim right off, watch them, slam the fish on the boat, hand in the gills, fish hitting head on deck etc. Drop it in and they will swim right off. Steelhead are not so different, hardy fish and when in cold water they are just fine to be handled
That's cause you know what's up bro. Most of these guys that talk trash have never seen a Steelhead. Nets unless the ghost netting, scratches the fishes cornea....I am done trying to explain why I land them like this.
@@colvilleoutfitters3290 respect the fish man. That was as disrespectful as you could have been to that great fish. You should have just kept it. Watch some videos from European Atlantic salmon, see how they treat their fish. We all learn, I used to do the same thing as a twenty year old. Cheers

I put a 1 on my floor when fishin a beed to prevent tangles. I been doing it a long time my friend. Just because you do it one way does not other ways wrong. Guaranteed you don't out fish me because I have a split on my floro
Wow, you still use lead on your rivers? Trust to be told, all this process turn me off. I would just grab my fly fishing setup and start fishing right away. Peace!
Fly fish away. I guess you dont want to catch many fish. the most effective way that I fly fish is using the same shot as I am using for float fishing. This is why its awesome that we have choices. You can legally fish however you want..so can I . I like to catch fish so I take the time to set up properly. This lead doesnt leave my line. So its not ending up in the river...ever
obviously you have never fished along a skilled fly fisherman then..i and friends of mine have many many times outfished pinners on the salmon river but like you said everyone has choices..landing ratio of centerpinners ive seen was like 2 for 10 as the worst possible position to hook a fish is below you and centerpinning thats the only way to fish..its very limited and i cannot recall seeing anyone making a hero drift more than 50 yards below them ever land the fish..thats just plain fact and physiques..i did enjoy your video though to see exactly how you rig up with a float..i personally would not fish this way but lots of guys do and love it..tight lines..
@@termite122 I would be more than happy to fish next to these awesome fly fisherman that I can almost bet money that they were flossing the fish they were catching if they were doing those kind of numbers. I have seen the best fly fisherman in the United States Fish for steelhead and if you ask any of them there is no way to ethically compete with a centerpin. Most guys fly fishing the salmon in the fall are using cannon balls and a big hook on their fly that will sweep the running lanes like a drag net. The best fly fishermen are the guys who do all techniques....and they know when to use what tactic to catch winter Steelhead
obviously u have no idea how to flyfish how the hell do u floss a steelhead? are u serious? lololol thats a good one..a 90 degree angle with a strike indicator with 2 bb shot and a glow bug, sucker spawn or trout bead is the rig which basically is almost the same as a pinning rig and the shot never touches bottom as u just slide your shot up and down depending on water depth and obviously without being able to make 100 yard hero drifts with fly line..steelhead are simple to catch.. all that a skilled angler needs to know is where and when to fish the rite places...if your not fishing over fish dont matter what technique is used...my wife is a total newbie to flyfishing and last year her first time trying it with me she hooked 9 steelhead on the salmon river and she doesnt even know what a steelhead trout even is.....i never said a word about flossing those disgusting mud sharks,,im talking about just steelhead.. good luck this season
@@termite122 dude Collville is a Ted but he's right on this. Your "skilled"fly guys are not gonna stick more than a pin unless they are lifting. In my 30+ years in the tribs and a fly guy myself I guarantee this.
Aww did your mommy or girlfriend yell at you yesterday so you felt the need to troll someones video. Mr. Big talker I would happily show you how its done any day on the river. I will catch fish all day while you twiddle your shit stained thumbs. Next time I will kill the fish for you David. Than throw it into the woods since I wont eat them out of that river system. I catch around 1,000 steelhead a season and very rarily do i have any mortality. Every once in the while i will have one take the hook deep which than I kill them because its a waist to throw back a dead fish. IF you havent put a fish on dry land before you sir are the amateur. Talk a walk down any creek during salmon or steelhead season and take your troll comments to the guys who actually damage the fish when they land them. Any little troll that will hide behind a keyboard like you is a waist in the world. We would all be better off if you were swallowed.
Colville Outfitters “we would all be better off if you were swallowed” best line ever! Love your videos, im in Toronto Ontario Canada, hope to get one of your reels one day, its funny how everyone is tough behind the screen but never in person
I don't mean to troll, but you ought to seriously learn how to handle fish before you catch any more. That fish will probably swim for a couple hours and die . Should have just killed it and taken it home .So much for the intention of letting it go to spawn
If you believe that you truly know nothing about steelhead. I don't want you to get the wrong idea with my tone. But these fish swim up hundreds of miles in some cases and in others they are preyed upon by orcas, sea lions, seals and birds of prey. They dig their bodies into the rocks to lay they eggs literally wearing off their fins. They jump face first into waterfalls. I worked in a fish hatchery for 2 years and handles lots of fish. Do you think shocking them, netting them, bringing them on the boat and into the hatchery. I promise you I am an advocate of catch and release and handling fish properly. If you think this damaged the fish in any way other than minor stress your wrong. Also nets take slime off of fish. I see a dead fish very seldomly and when I do there is some sign of what happened to them except in the Salmon River in Pulaski which ended up being a strange vitamin deficiency. Trust someone who does this for a living. Someone who has caught thousands of fish. That fish was just fine
Yes your tone is bad and I've probably caught more big winter steel head than you have seen-- some of them in the 20 plus pound class. I've caught salmon in the fifty plus pound class but all it takes to kill a big tough fish like that is one simple mistake and the fish swims off and about 2 hours later it is doing the back stroke . And yeah I'm one of those stuck up fly fishermen and have been fishing and catching big winter fish longer than you have existed. I was interested in center pin fishing because I have an open mind. I was interested in spending some money on gear but the way you represented yourself in your shop and on the river turned me off . I think I'll just stick to what I have for now . lots of other people complained about this too .Jeeze ! All you have to do is just find a good place to land your fish before you start, so you can have a clean release . Do yourself a favor and think about your business image. Running around your shop with a bunch of rubber bands in your hair and baggies makes you look like an immature unsophisticated dink .Doing what you did may or may not have killed that fish but you still looked like a dink . If you want to sell your fancy gear, you have to dress the part and behave respectfully; if you want people to spend their money with you. . But heck it's your business and I don't think you realize the market share you cut out because of the image you put forward . I think you might be a basically good guy; but you have to think a little more about what you are doing here, especially with how critical things can get in the information age - with all of the various platforms .
@@marvinbanjo Jeesh man, just because he doesn’t look like you doesn’t mean he’s a bad guy. That wasn’t a very nice thing to say. Also, have you really seen fish die two hours later or did somebody just tell you that? Colville on the other hand has had ample experience handling steelhead working at a Hatchery, which is a legitimately good experience for learning about steelhead.
@@AlexHammers-yn9bf yes I have seen them die !!!!! I've seen this with bass, I've seen it with salmonids and all kinds of fish -- especially if they are bleeding from the gills with ill handling . They will swim away and then you see the same fish doing the back stroke. Fish go into shock just like any other animal no more than people . It's a hell of a lot of stress on a fish to fight the line and tire and if not cared for properly they will die when released . It has nothing to do with what someone looks like and I seriously don't know where that came from . If the guy worked in a hatchery he should know better . Most of those hatchery fish are just stripped for eggs and sperm and the meat is sent to places for secondary use. I don't think they are being returned to the rivers . At least this isn't what happens in hatcheries near my home .
Hey, you talk like a master, but you don't know that the fish is supposed to be taken out of the water and into the landing net. It's a creature of God, you wouldn't want anyone dragging you around the sand either. If you don't know what a sub is, write me and I'll send it to you. Eric
Pinners keep female fish for eggs, that's why our Erie tribs have no fish! Thanks Dan Colville for telling everyone were to try the gear they buy. Low holers with no stream etiquette. All for a few bucks. TERRIBLE
Me and my personal friends don't kill steelhead for eggs...ever. sadly lots of people do whether they centerpins or not. I like using salmon, better egg, more of them and the salmon are not going to even have a shot to reproduce where u get the eggs from
And the snaggers keep every fish they catch what’s your point? If someone wants to keep a fish or two for eggs that’s not going to destroy a fishery especially a fishery like Erie that is stocked with thousands and thousands of fish annually use some common sense and stfu most people I see with centerpins actually have river etiquette it’s the bottom bouncers and the snaggers who walk right up and fish right next to me
