@@albionangling exactly, i bought my first centerpin just 2weeks ago. I do a lot of flyfishing and fishing with floats on ponds... i did all kinds of fishing, now centerpin fishing will be right in between the 2 i love the most. Ready for another year of learning🥰

Have you considered bending down and putting the fish back, as opposed to tossing them in?
@albionangling
@albionangling 2 года назад
I hear you mate, but my thinking with chucking back the little ones is that they always swim off like a shot straight after hitting the water. I'm always paranoid about pike picking off small fish after they've been returned to the water, if you release them gently they tend to swim off quite slow and sluggish, making them easy pickings for a pike. Just my experience, interested to hear your thoughts on this, ultimately I want what's best for the fish of course

I really don't care what I'm catching when fishing with a pin, it's such a enjoyable way to fish except when the wind is been silly.

Cracking day out in God's country with the lads as always! That little free stretch at the start of video is somewhere i am still very keen to try, convinced there is a special fish to be had there. Our next team outing could very well be on the Ribble...
@jorvikangler
@jorvikangler 2 года назад
There are some nice fish to be had on that stretch. There are also some very fine snags as well. Bread is ideal as it avoids the minnows, although cheese paste used to be very popular down there.

If you head 300 metres upstream from the bridge there is a bend in the river where a small tributary and WWT pipe flows in (last time I went I had to hack through nettles to get to it). The water runs about 12-14ft deep here and is the best place to catch bigger fish. Worm always worked for me - trotted along the outfall from the pipe. In winter it's mostly unfishable.
@albionangling
@albionangling 2 года назад
Hello Andy thanks so much for the info will definitely give that a go. Have you ever fished the weir near the caravan park? Seems to be pretty popular up there but never tried it myself.
@andygermaine6882
@andygermaine6882 2 года назад
I've not been that way for a few years now but the only weir I can think of is the one at Sutton-on-Derwent which last I knew was on Leeds/York book. That stretch is particularly good in winter (above weir). Downstream was a riverside pub at Thorganby (The Ferryboat) that did day tickets. I doubt it will still be open but the fishing there opposite the canal mouth was very good for roach, bream, hybrids and monster pike.

They are worth spending time learning, despite how frustrating they can be when things aren't going to plan on the bank! Accept some tangles when learning, and patience pays off (something we are accustomed to in fishing 😀) What pins you got?

Is there any particular reason why Joel has his line coming off the top of his ‘pin and you have,like me, your line coming off the bottom of your ‘pin?
@albionangling
@albionangling 2 года назад
Well spotted John! Personally, I like having the line coming off the bottom as it feels more comfortable to retrieve line after a trot. I believe Joel has his line come off the top because its meant to give less drag on the first eye of the rod, allowing the line to come off the reel more easily. Think that's right, sure Joel can chip in if that's not true. Either way, line off the bottom works for me, line off the top works for Joel! Cheers, Niall
@joeldixon3459
@joeldixon3459 2 года назад
To some extent yes, as Niall says, off the top does give slightly less drag on the first eye of the rod! There are two other reasons worth mentioning John: • off the top = easier to cast in windy conditions (cats cradle style). This is a marginal benefit, casting in the wind is just hard work with a pin, no matter what you do! • off the top = The ratchet on my Sheffield engages when spinning anti-clockwise. Therefore requiring 'off the top' to ensure ratchet engages when playing a fish as its taking line! You can reverse the ratchet direction by adjusting the ratchet pawl in the mechanism, but not done it yet myself! That would be needed if you wish to stick to 'off the top' or 'off the bottom' and the ratchet doesn't engage when fish taking line.

What centre pin was Joel using? It looks really nice, i'm looking for a good one, only gunna buy one so want a really good one like that one, i'll have it for rest of life, never centred pinned before but always wanted to after watching john wilson in the mid 80's on go fishing
@albionangling
@albionangling 2 года назад
Hi Danny, the pin I am using in the video is an Okuma Sheffield. You can get them for around £100 on ebay, keep your eyes peeled, there's a few knocking around. They probably have the best bearings on the market! They spin forever (which some people don't like). They are great for delicate trotting, once you get the control right with your thumb.
@DJFarside
@DJFarside 2 года назад
@@albionangling Nice one, thanks, spinning forever seems like the perfect centrepin lol, not sure why others dont like that ha ha
@albionangling
@albionangling 2 года назад
@@DJFarside I don't experience any problems with such free spinning bearings but others say it causes 'overruns' on your line, less control and chance of tangles if you are paying too much line out compared to speed of float. Its all in the thumb for me though! Cheers, Joel.

The longer rod is the one i'm using, 15ft Drennan Acolyte. I should do a video on this rod, its just incredible, catching dace to barbel, it handles everything with precision and is light as a feather. Just got to be careful with tip section, very delicate especially if you slam it with a van door like i did 😀 All the best, Joel
