Today it's Blobz' 60th birthday so we're celebrating with a blast from our arcade past! This is a sudoku themed on the classic Atari game Centipede, it's approachable and it's lovely. Do have a go if you have a little time :)

Rules:
Normal sudoku rules apply. Adjacent digits along the centipede differ by at least 5. A digit on a mushroom indicates how many mushrooms contain that digit. White dots separate consecutive digits. Digits on the pink cannon form a non-repeating consecutive sequence.

Wow! This was a totally unexpected Birthday Surprise!! Thank you so much for the puzzle feature, Simon, and thank you for all the Birthday Wishes from commenters. For those keeping track of such things, my wife (Ms.Blobz) and I went shopping at lunchtime and picked up a chocolate cake to share with friends and family this evening. And, you guessed it, the icing-to-cake ratio is 1:1.

Took me some work but I ended up getting this one in 00:48:15, my first ever puzzle in under an hour! I had to resort to Simon for some hints on the break-in, but I was actually able to see it on my own. Quite proud of that.

somehow Simon counting in this puzzle reminded me a bit of Count von Count of sesame street. Simon, I don't know why but I would love to hear your best Count von Count impersonation during a puzzle like that. 'One mushroom ahahahah, two mushrooms ahahahaha, three mushrooms...' oh by the way, orange and blue are probably the most colorblind-friendly colors you have but to everyone who is not color-blind orange and blue under a green centipede is definitely NOT kind 🤣

Simon, I didn't expect that you would mention my message on stream about my wife, Laurie. To have it be on an Atari themed sudoku is very fitting. One of her prized possessions was the old Atari 2600 she kept from her childhood that still works. Thank you again for all you've did, without knowing, that made her life better.

Okay, let me help out the younger viewers (as Simon says @7:23): Okay, the mushrooms are only in 5 boxes (so, you may as well, label them all up as 12345). Now, in box4, if the "5" was NOT in there, there would be too may low digits in three (for the German Whisper centipede in there) You can find some "5s." Now, the other mushrooms must add to five. (10 mushrooms minus 5 is 5) So, back to box4 again. They're either 1~4 or 2~3 If 23 in box4, then a 4 must be on one of those two low cells in box4. (Impossible) So, they're "1~4" after all. Do your shading, have fun. (I just did this puzzle yesterday, from and channel, Folks, that's why it's so fresh in my mind) Congrats, Mark and Simon on 600K.

22:36 My first ever puzzle I solved that was featured on the channel. I usually just enjoy the videos without trying because I have gotten it in me that I am really not clever enough for the puzzles featured on the channel. But I saw the time it took Simon and decided to give it a go and I surprised myself big time today. Fun puzzle!

20:00. Quickly realized shrooms were low or 5 so could easily figure high low on centipede. From there easy. Only took so long because waiting for bus home from work so kept stopping to check the bus tracker. 10/10

Great fun. Loved the smooth solve path - the limits on the mushroom contents disambiguate the caterpillar etc. The cannon more or less falls out near the end.

Another way to starts with, the mushroom rule. There are only 5 boxes which have mushrooms. i.e. the biggest digit of a mushroom is 5. There are 10 mushrooms, so the digit combinations of mushrooms will be 5s, 4s, 1s OR 5s, 3s, 2s. There must be mushrooms of 5s. Box 6 has only 1 mushroom, therefore it must be a 5, or else there will not be enough boxes for mushroom 5s.

That's what I thought at first, but then realized that you can also have 4s, 3s, 2s, 1s.... until, as Simon does at 18:00, you find that you can rule out that as a possible combination

i read the renban rule as “cannoT” instead of “cannon” at first and was so confused on why’s that😂 got stuck because of it but luckily noticed and ended up solving the puzzle in 15:11

It annoyed me that Simon said he’d look up the year Centipede came out and then didn’t put it in the description (I may be a little weird to be annoyed by this, but I think most watchers of CtC are slightly weird in some way lol). So I looked it up. If anyone else is curious: it was 1981 🥰 Thanks for all the lovely sudoku solving, Simon! Please don’t take my minor annoyance too seriously 🤣😊

1981 for Centipede. I got the mushrooms by counting the number of mushrooms across boxes - 3 boxes have 2 each, one has 3 and the fifth box has 1, so 5,4,1 is the only combination that works.

That's not sufficient to restrict it. Just from counting across boxes, you could have 523 / 52 / 53 / 53 / 5, or 421 / 43 / 43 / 23 / 4, for example

If you want an actual fact about centipedes, scientists have never found a centipede with exactly 100 legs And, if I remember correctly, I’m also fairly certain every centipede counted has an odd number of legs but I’m not prepared to stand strongly on that

Simon could have also noted that there were 3 mushrooms in box 4 and for the option of 1, 2, 3, and 4 to be valid, that would have required 4 mushrooms to be in box 4 to accommodate the 4 low digits, and there are 3 so that could have never been an option.

You don't need 4 mushrooms to be in a single box unless they exist only in 4 boxes. Because they exist in 5 boxes, you could distribute the numbers 1-4 among the mushrooms as given without breaking mushroom or sudoku rules.

I don't mean to be negative, but what's special about 600k? I don't remember them celebrating 500k, which is a more "round" number in my opinion. Congrats anyway! 😊
