Was station atop Mt. Horace Greeley at Calumet AFS (Air Force Site). We never went out in the Woods unArmed , of course the radar site itself lay right where the Bears had to pass thru on their way to the garbage dump.

I had found some real nice.chunks of copper metal detecting the tailings of the lower shafts. Very unfortunately the lower tailings were crushed for roads. But the only good thing was they were exposing rock with their loader that hadn't been seen for a 150 years. Its one thing to detect the surface like people have over the past years but be able to get into the center is a whole nother ball game. You figure production was most likely at its peak around the time the poor rock was being dumped. I just bought a 1864 Central Mining Company $5.00 Company money bill off eBay. Currently are still more up for sale ranging from $50 to $250. I bought mine for $40 and is in very good condition. My family has 4 generations of hard rock copper mining history. I have two solid chunks of silver my granddaddy took or more accurately stole from the mine he worked at lol. After my mom passed they went to me since she always wanted me to have them I just didn't want to take them since it was from her 103 year old dad in 1982. Over the many years I've found large pieces of float copper drill bits core samples you name it I've found it. I'm a copper country artist mines and the railroads that criss-crossed the Keweenaw back in the day. Having spent most of my lifes vacations at Lac La Belle fishing visiting family in Mohawk exploring and metal detecting since 1965. Cliff, Centrail, Delaware, Phynex, Quincy, Franklin and Pewabic all part of a buy out from the quincy are some of the oldest in the copper country but Cliff being the oldest and the mines near by is where it all began. My buddy found a beautiful chunk of native silver at the central near the no 2 shaft probably fell out of a miners pocket 120 years ago. Well I could go one and on about the copper country but I'd burn out your phones and computers. Happy exploring.

They mention hiway US41 which runs up the center of the Keweenaw all the way to Copper Harbor on Lake Superior. Wonderful place to go in the summer. Now see where the other end of US41 goes. Save that for winter!

It goes to the tip of Florida
@harrytazzia4133

No that would probably be Key West. Actually US 41 ends in Miami Beach. Lake Superior at the north end and the Atlantic Ocean at the south end.

@@harrytazzia4133 US 41 and I-75 are the longest roads running north and south in the US, both starting in Michigan or Florida, depending on perspective. US 41 was built about 17 years before the road through key west

I was stationed at Kinchelo afb from 1972 thru 1975. Also played mens fast pitch softball as part of the communications squadron. Never been to Calumet station. A great time in my life.

The copper was NOT deposited in fractures in a molten state. As soon as I heard that comment, I knew the presenter had no idea what he was talking about, and stopped the video.

And neither is it 1 billion years old . I have seen geologists age newly formed rocks millions of years old hahah by scientific methods
