This is the eighth video in the series on central Moreton Bay. This time I am looking at a couple of spots that need no introduction, Harry Atkinsons artificial reef and the Foul Ground.
Harry Atkinson’s reef would have to be one of the most fished spots in the bay. In all but the worst weather there are boats fishing there and on a good day it richly deserves its alternate name of “the car park”. There is a lot of structure there and it is an unusual day when you can’t find some bait hanging around. Everyone knows that where bait hangs around big fish also hang around trying to eat the bait.
Apart from scuttling the Tiwi Pearl and the barge, the rest of the pictures depicting things that were dropped to construct the reef are generic, solely to illustrate the process of building the reef.
I talk a little about the importance of having good bait in the video and here are the details for Mr Bait where I buy mine.

Thanks for this helpful information. I had been buying my bait from Aussie Seafoods Capalaba but the quality seems to have dropped off in recent times. I went to Mr Bait yesterday for the first time and bought some prawns and pilchards to try out next week. I normally stay clear of Harries for the same reasons you mentioned in the video and have found more action along the inner reefs, islands and sand banks.
@weFishAU
@weFishAU 10 месяцев назад
I think you will find the bait from Mr Bait second only to livies. Quite correct about the inner reefs, but Harries can be worth an overnighter on a reasonably calm night. If you ever do, try to pick up some livies in the afternoon. You can usually find some close to the structures. Mid week is better than weekends because others have the same idea then.

Thanks again for your advice, much appreciated. I am thinking of trying Harries early tomorrow morning if the wind drops as per Willy Weather prediction. I found a mark holding fish there in August during the snapper closure and would like to give it a go on an incoming tide. Plan to anchor there around 3am, burley up, and float line pillies, whole squid and mullet strips until 6.30am. Then troll the spoons down to Peel and back home to Manly by 9am. Do you think this is a reasonable plan?
@weFishAU
@weFishAU 10 месяцев назад
Sounds good. If the forecast holds (and it looks like it will) it should be good. There are quite a lot of marks around Harries, if you don't see fish or bait on one, try another. With luck I will be out tomorrow as well, although probably not at Harries. Best of luck.

Excellent, especially good to know what sort of rig and bait to use for us novices lol
@weFishAU

The rig is important, but I don't think it is as important as having good bait.

Where do I go on my computer to get those fantastic overhead pictures of the channels and sandbarrs etc around Moreton bay. I have the beacon to Beacon directory but they are not as good as those actual aerial photos.

The program I use on the videos is one I have developed called FishTrax. fishtrax.we-fish.com.au But is uses standard Bing maps so you can get the ariel views on your browser, just type in "bing maps" in the search bar. Another one that I like a lot is Mapbox. api.mapbox.com/styles/v1/mapbox-public/ckngin2db09as17p84ejhe24y.html?fresh=true&title=copy&access_token=pk.eyJ1IjoibWFwYm94LXB1YmxpYyIsImEiOiJja25oeXkzY2owcHpsMm9wYzJidXV0cDdzIn0.Lb_KRFr5jFJAeBmTUF4gYg#11.29/-27.4579/153.4309/0/9

Many thanks for your spectacularly rapid and helpful reply. I am 73 years old and retired quite a while and love fishing. At one point I went out every week for a whole year to Moreton Bay fishing. I have a 22 foot Mariner Pacer. I rarely catch fish although I try hard and I guess I am both doing things wrong and also probably fishing at the wrong time and place. I have only ever caught one decent Snapper and that was `a 63 cm specimen at Peel Island. I am going to get enthused again and start to try some more. Thanks for your help. Phil Dudley Corinda.

Hey mate how's the Penn bait runner go for you thanks I love your vids.👍
@weFishAU
@weFishAU Год назад
Thank you. Love the bait runner. Only downside is the enormous amount of line it holds which makes it more expensive to fill than some others. Still, plenty of line there for those long runs.

@@weFishAU cheers for the quick reply I have an old okuma bait runner that sadly is on its last legs I'm tossing up between the Penn[prefered ] or the tried and true Shimano its a toss of the coin thing.

One of the boys has a Shimano bait runner. It really is a toss up. I think my Penn holds more line but other than that there is nothing to pick between them.

Hey mate, what site/map are you using there, and how would i go about getting to/finding harry atkinsons reef. Thanks
@weFishAU
@weFishAU 2 года назад
The application I am using is called FishTrax, something I have developed. I am currently finishing up the documentation for it and hope to release it by the end of the month. I will announce it on this channel when it is available. The GPS coordinates I have given in the video are for the structure that has been dropped there. Finding it is easy, unless you are arriving while it is still dark just look for the boats, it is like a car park on a calm day. On a busy day I don't even bother trying to find a spot, I just go elsewhere.

@@weFishAU Hi mate, appreciate the time and effort u put in to do these videos. I’ve grown up in Innisfail fishing the reef there as a kid but Brisbane is a lot different. Just bought a bigger boat finally at 42 and am able to fish around a bit. Just hit a spot near green yesterday got some good fish sweetlip all under some monster bream, snapper some species of parrot fish we released because wasn’t sure if they eat well. Thinking of taking ur advise and hitting Harry’s . I am able to do this during the week any advise mate.
@weFishAU
@weFishAU 2 года назад
@@matthewharris-davies8368 Definitely fish light around the islands. You should be able to fish with no sinker at all until the tide starts to run a bit. Then just increase the weight a little at a time to keep the bait sinking slowly. Sometimes worth dropping a heavy paternoster directly under the boat, can get the odd good one on it.
