Nestled amidst Central Otago's vineyards, with the majestic Dunstan Mountains rising in the distance, a dream of a permanent home took root. The vision: a haven bathed in sunlight, its clean lines echoing the vast panorama. This desire for minimalism translated into a design with a single floor plane and a roof, seamlessly connected by walls of glass. Imagine an open pavilion, seemingly floating above the rugged landscape, offering breathtaking vistas up and down the valley. To achieve this sense of weightlessness, the architects employed a clever technique. They created a negative space around the ground floor, allowing the expansive concrete slab to cantilever outwards. This mirrored the form of the roof, positioned at a specific height to ensure uninterrupted views of the mountain range. Stepping inside, you'll find a series of service pods tucked away from the expansive windows, creating a corridor effect. Retractable windows and doors blur the lines between indoors and outdoors, inviting the surrounding vineyards to become an extension of the living space. The exposed nature of the site demanded solutions for the strong winds. The architects responded with an H-shaped layout, forming a series of sheltered terraces and courtyards - perfect for embracing the outdoors. Sustainability was paramount in this design. The use of passive solar principles is evident in the cantilevered roof. It shades the home during the summer months while allowing winter sunlight to penetrate, warming the interior with the help of the building's thermal mass. Local materials, chosen for their aesthetic and functional properties in Otago's climate, were a key element of the minimalist approach. The exterior walls are adorned with vertical light-stained cedar shingles and schist, a natural stone that resonates with the nearby rocky gully and the region's pioneering heritage. The interior continues the theme of minimalism with polished concrete floors juxtaposed against dark-stained timber and veneer. Timber batten ceilings add a touch of visual interest while enhancing acoustics. To expedite the homeowners' enjoyment of their retreat, the project was constructed in stages. The initial phase comprised the living areas and the master bedroom, forming the heart of the home. The following year saw the completion of the second stage, connected by a glass hallway. This addition housed guest bedrooms, a laundry room, and a wine cellar, catering to all aspects of comfortable living. Despite residing overseas, the clients remained actively involved throughout the construction process, participating in site meetings whenever possible. The project faced challenges - the global pandemic, lockdowns, staff isolation, and disruptions in the supply chain. However, with the clients' unwavering trust in the architects and the construction team, all hurdles were overcome, resulting in the realization of a stunning and functional home.
