Thanks for the update Paul! A shame about the loss of Sydney history. That is water being sprayed on the demolition works, used for dust suppression. Cheers
Wow Paul! Not only your usual VERY interesting insights into the happenings at Central Station but a heartfelt and thorough report of the terrible fire. Thank you again!
Thanks Paul, my granddaughter uses Central walk now to access Light Rail from the T8 line so I showed her your latest video to familiarize her with the new Chalmers St entrance.😋
Wonderfully put together, Paul. Thanks for another awesome update. This was your best yet. As someone who lives in the neighbourhood, the loss of that heritage listed building is heartaching given its potential. It could've been one of the most conveniently located hotels for public transport access in Sydney from a tourist perspective. Such a shame. I wonder if they'll build a brand new hotel on that site. I'm eagerly awaiting the repair of the Chalmers St entrance air con unit and brick cladding. Tragic. I hate delays lol. Thanks again!
Thanks Gavin, Glad you think so! Yes I do hope that this site still becomes a hotel, and is still called "the hat hotel". It could have photos of this old heritage building in the corridors and perhaps in the rooms. Let's see what happens. Yes, hopefully the repairs won't take long.
i think its a shame too but Im starting to wonder if it may have been a fire trap as a motel despite modern day sprinklers etc. Its a good thing that no one died, the fire may have prevented future deaths but not sure of this?????
Thanks Paul - the best coverage I've seen of the aftermath and flow-on effects of a tragic few days in the recent history of Surry Hills. Your detail is unparalleled. The Hat Hotel would have been wonderful from the architects' images I've seen. But not to be. I must take the time to take a trip and have a close look at some of the terrific new station developments. Thanks again for all your informative coverage - great stuff!
Glad you enjoyed it Tim. The effect on the Chalmers Street entrance didn't really get a mention in the news coverage, so it was good to be able to talk about that. Hopefully the site will still be used for a hotel in the future. Yes definitely worth seeing the new station developments for real!
Thanks a lot for the update Paul. I am very interested in finding out the progress. I live just 400m from Cherrybrook metro station. I look forward to riding the metro directly to Sydney CBD next year.
Hey Paul. When I first saw the fire on the news I could see that it was close to Chalmers St entry but no matter how many times I watched the footage I couldn't work out where the fire building was. I have been watching the development of the Chalmers St entry since the start, and so your video has answered the questions that I had about the fire and the new entry. Thanks.
Hi Neal, yes it took me a while to figure out where the new station entrance was, when I first saw the news coverage. Hopefully it won't take long to repair it.
I echo @tims8305 comments on your coverage of the fire and its damage. Again, this was an excellent video of the update on Chalmers Street etc for which I thank you very much.
Since the R. Henderson hat factory was built in 1912. In 1912 was When Berghofer's Pass opened and if you don't know what Berghofers Pass is Paul Berghofer's Pass functioned as an alternative to Victoria Pass to take horse drawn carriages Up/ down the other side of the Blue Mountains towards Bathurst and Oberon back before Motor vehicle cars were invented. Berghofers Pass closed permanently in 1934 when motor vehicle cars became more Powerful and Michell's Victoria Pass 1832 was constructed for Early Motor Vehicle Cars
Thanks Paul. I wondered where you were besides being in Melbourne. You certainly have given a very historic update in this episode. When the fire broke out, I wondered about your response and reaction. Now we have it! I look forward avidly for the next installments.
Glad you enjoyed it Luke! Yes it was a more challenging video to do, and I think viewers appreciated coverage that focussed more on the Chalmers Street station entrance, as that didn't really get mentioned on the news coverage.
Awesome vid Paul as always. I was over at Sydenham on the weekend and noted there were two Metro Train outside in the stabling yards. Do you think they will be the “mules” for the testing of the tracks under the city?
Yes that's right. There have been 2 metro trains in the sidings for a few days now. Yes quite possibly for testing within the tunnels, but also for checking that all the sidings and access tracks are working within Trains Facility South as well.
Hi Paul, last time I went to the Museum of Contemporary Art, just saw that the T and M signs were already installed at the Central Charmers St entrance as well as the elevators.
Yes that's right! I've seen them too. Scaffolding has now come down on the Randle Lane side, and work is about to start on repairing Randle Lane from the fire, so I reckon opening will be mid to late November.
Than k s Paul nice video.when they rinish with rankle lane whenever that is the charmers street entrance will open making central walk very large in size.thry have done a very nice job so far
Hi Paul, thanks for another informative video. I am wondering what was previously there in Randle lane prior to the newly built Central Station entrance. We saw news about the Surry Hills fire on TV here in Melbourne, though your video covers quite a few scenes not seen (as least by me) before. I suppose we can be thankful that it wasn't far worse. Incidentally, our former Mont Albert and Surrey Hills railway stations here have been demolished and replaced by a new station halfway in between called Union. So far, I haven't visited Union station, though I notice others habe covered it quite thoroughly on RU-vid. Anyway, wishing you the very best. Rob in Melbourne Australia.
Hi Rob, glad you enjoyed it! It used to be the Bounce Hotel. It got a mention in my very first Central Station Update video. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-g7S1xtwLvwE.html. Yes, I tried to find footage of the fire that was more relevant to the new Chalmers Street entrance. Thanks for the info on Union station. I'll definitely check that out on my next Melbourne visit. I always love covering something new!
Thanks Stojan! Possibly, I did notice some work happening on the ceiling, which may get the newer white panels with the black stripes. It would be good to see some of the older parts of the station getting a refresh.
So lucky the new entrance didn’t get taken out along with the old hat factory and it’s neighbour. I’d say repairs will be done, luckily the damage was only minor.
It's looking different at Central Railway Station I hape the New Entrance will be Opening soon Central Railway Station is fantastic it is looking different than what it was before I might have a look at the new pathway.
No bodies were found, so I believe those two homeless people escaped. As far as I know, no lives were lost. I believe the fire was started deliberately by some teenagers.
