#Centrifugal_casting was developed in 1807 and from then, this process is used for better strength, reliability, high density and sound production at much lower cost.
In this process, molten metal is poured in a mould which is rotating. The molten metal experiences centrifugal force and it is forced radially outward. The axis of rotation could be vertical, horizontal or even inclined.
Applications of Centrifugal casting are various cylindrical parts like pipes, rings, rims.
When the mould rotates, the denser material flows towards the outer surface while light weight slag remains at the inner surface which can be removed later.
The mould kept rotating until molten metal solidifies.
Advantages:
It is good for mass production
Directional solidification
No use of gates, risers etc.
No shrinkage cavities, blowholes
Good mechanical properties.
Limitations:
Only cylindrical parts or limited range of parts can be made
High initial cost.
More skilled worker is required.
Centrifugal casting can be done in three ways:
True centrifugal casting
Semi-centrifugal casting
Centrifuged casting
The centrifugal casting is very interesting method of casting every engineer should know.
In learning manufacturing process Foundry is foremost important and versatile process of manufacturing from ancient time.
