While making a video on the classic centripetal swinging tray demonstration, some of the variations shown were being tested for the first time as I was making the video. The result being that not everything went as smoothly as possible. However, overall I was impressed with the changes and look forward to taking them a step further in the future.

Would adding a small metal weight to the long swing be helpful? It would help keep the momentum of everything going without the cardboard getting affected by the air resistance as much.

I did notice but I think it's easier to just spell "tangent" than to demonstrate. Thanks for the laughs! The difference between science and just screwing around is publishing records. The standard was clearly met. (In other aspects, my two children of still single digits in the annual counting very much enjoy your presentations. Please count that as three more "thank you")

You should have shown more of these in the video, it's such a surreal thing to watch, I bet most people wouldn't believe it. If I hadn't seen your work, and this demonstration before, I might have thought you faked it!

What if you had a mechanism designed that started with a short arm movement (easy to swing around), then it slowly released the line to a larger diameter? 😃

When you swing, there are centripetal and tangential accelerations. To keep the cup on the plate, you should keep the rotating velocity constant.

Bruce can't apply a tangential acceleration to the tray with that setup. Tangential acceleration would require the string to resist bending. Since the string can only pull the tray (and objects on it) along the line of the string itself, the apparent tangential acceleration is generated by Bruce moving his hand in an approximate circle. The phase of his hand movement will be about 90° ahead of the tray in its "circle". The fails are the result of the tray hitting something, or of the string going slack. In some cases the string goes slack enough that the vertical component of the centripetal acceleration is less than gravity, so things fall. In others, though the string may still appear taut, the centripetal acceleration is reduced enough that the normal force - and, thus, the friction force - between the tray and the objects on it is no longer sufficient to resist the force of the air, so the objects are simply blown off the tray.

I love your videos, although this one in particular made me laugh a lot, because it seems that if it doesn't work with just a few, it would be necessary to use many glasses so that it would work much less.

Hi Aiden, nice to hear from you, I will be back in school once in a while substituting, including some days for 8th grade science. I have some ideas for future videos that I would love to get some student help with, hopefully I can do them this fall
