This is the first recce video of a race I’m running on the 12th October 2024. It’s the Centurion Running Autumn 100 mile race that encompasses 4x 25 mile spurs in different directions. Legs 1 and 4 are on the Thames Path and legs 2 and 3 are on The Ridgeway. The base is in Goring, Oxfordshire, at the Village Hall making it a great way to get access to your own kit and nutrition every 25 miles.
Please note, this video is a recording of my recce run of leg 3. I’ve never been on any of the course before and never ran this event either. I can’t guarantee that there aren’t any errors of distances, elevation or directions.
This will be my 3rd 100 mile distance and as well as hopefully getting my first ever buckle, I aim to finish in under 24 hours.
Here is a link to the event website if you’d like further information

Love seeing all the different locations, am actually jealous of the rain, it's 98 degrees F here and running is brutal.

@@tennisatheist9460 - I’d definitely take cool and wet over extreme heat. 98 sounds impossible to train and race in. Hopefully there’s a cooler start to the day to get some training done 🤞

I think I'd have preferred the ancient earthworks to running on some of that terrain 😂 Good luck with the rest of the ultra preparations.

Those are my favourite kind of trail paths. I ran a local trail at the weekend and it was so overgrown in places it was ‘unrunnable’ 😂 …. not in the same sense as winter muddy trails though 😉

At least you got a few minutes sunshine and managed to visit the spectacular Scutchamer Knob. Apparently there is a curse on the place, probably why it started raining again as soon as you climbed down it. Good luck with the other races.

When we passed there on the way out, there was a group of walkers and some scouts in a mini bus hanging around that area. We never twigged that they were there visiting the site. The scouts may have been the ones who’d trimmed it back a bit. I think it’ll take on a new dimension in the middle of the night. I might not be so jovial about its history then 👻😁

Looks like a cool run. At least the trail looked very runnable. Never graduated into the ultra running, stuff. I was interested in it for a bit but it really isn't my distance. Loved the visit to the towns, definitely different vibe than the US stuff. Also learned some new vocabulary feom your video: recce and dual carriageway. I am going to have to drop those into my conversations here. You look so happy too Rachel. Always love warching your running adventures.

Thanks Eddie. Glad to have added some new words to add to your chats 😁 I think I lean more to longer distances because I have to work so hard to get any speed. Very short distances I’m terrible, but I seem to find the longer I go the (relatively) easier it gets. The down side from ultra running though is it takes ages to fully recover. I’m trying to get enough miles in without burning out, but not too few, that I haven’t trained enough. Hopefully I can get the balance right 🤞 Hope you’re still training well too?

@@racheld1844 yes! Just getting ready to head out the door for a 5k in a bit here. July had some setbacks and I had a bit of a health scare so I had to take about half of July off. But I have gotten the all clear to resume running, so I have been back at it. Just happy to be able to run again

@@eddiegaul1903 that’s exactly it, even with all the numbers and times floating round our heads, the most important thing is, that we can get out and run. Did my 5k parkrun this morning, so all down to you to get yours done now. Enjoy 😊

@@racheld1844 yup. I have Roy Days in Roy Utah this morning. A bit of a drive but it is a well organized race put on by the local track club and kicks off the city's festival.

I was about to say that doing 100 miles is a bit mad, but then i saw the flapjack 😅 Wait for me! 🏃‍♂️💨 I've been thinking a lot myself about how to have the discipline to go slowly, walk the hills, save some energy for later etc. It's all harder than it sounds. I'm sure you'll get the hang of it before i do 😂👍

We’ll be trialing a different cake on each visit. It’s a good incentive to go back 😁 Pacing over such a long distance is a tricky one. I’d like a bit in the bank over at least the 1st and probably 2nd leg but beyond that it’s anyone’s guess. The best I’ve done is being able to run walk to 80 miles but my last 100 I walked the last 20 miles. It threw my timing way over the average for the run. 35 minute miles was gruelling 😩 If I can do at least some running on that final leg I’ll class it as a win 🥇

@@racheld1844 it was pretty perfect which was lucky for my fist 100k. 18 degrees and dry. RTTS is all along the ridge way. Now entered Centurion’s TP100 next May! I’ll come and cheer you and others on at A100 as I live near Pangbourne

@@lukeowens19 - brilliant! Well done on completing your first 100k. I’ve never ran that distance at an event but did set up a 100k during lockdown as pre- 100m training run. Thames path has a lot of mixed reviews for difficulty. I work really well with flat ground so it would probably suit me to a t 😁 You’ll definitely be well trained on that ground, living on the route. Perfect 🏃🏻

@racheld1844
@racheld1844 Месяц назад
I should have filmed when we first got out of the car, we were being blown sideways and the rain was much heavier. I don’t think we could’ve picked a worse summers day. If I had to choose between that and a heat wave though, I’d definitely go cool, wet and windy 🌧️

Cracking stuff Rachel! I am sure this will be very helpful for lots of people. I hope you can get some of the other spurs recced too. Bit of a grim day for it but that will likely be the weather you get especially in the autumn so its great training. I have no doubt you will finish under 24 hours. 💪 What 50 miler have you got booked? That was a disappointing knob 🤣👍

@racheld1844 Месяц назад
Thanks so much Ben. Yes, a very disappointing, overgrown knob. The photos on google showed it a lot more well kept. We’re actually watching your NDW video right now. The weather looked 100 times worse 🌧️ … and you ran 75 more miles 😁 This is one we’d definitely like to have a go at at some point. We’ve booked on to the White Horse 50. Starting and finishing in Marlborough but…. worst of all…. no poles allowed 😭

@BenNotley Месяц назад
@@racheld1844 noone wants an overgrown knob 🤣 cheers for checking that vid out again. Can't believe it was a year ago. I have got a bit of Fomo about missing it this year. It's a quality race as I am sure the A100 will be. Did you do the white horse last year or am I imagining that? Best of luck. 😎🤘
@racheld1844
@racheld1844 Месяц назад
@@BenNotley - I think it’s not so bad seeing others racing when you have your own similar plans in the pipeline. Worst is probably watching from the sidelines when you’re injured 🤕 The White Horse is where I did both my 100 races. So it’s the same race I’m doing this year, just the shorter distance. I’ll be able to loop back towards the finish as the 100 runners carry on out into the dark 🐎
