After dark, the Roxie Theater’s marquee shines bright in the heart of San Francisco’s Mission District.
"Our marquee is not just an advertisement of the Roxie, but it is a symbol of independence, the spirit of San Francisco", Roxie’s Executive Director Lex Sloan reveals.
The historic, non-profit, art house cinema is over a hundred years old.
"The Roxie Theater is one of the oldest continuously, operating running theaters in the country", Sloan shares.
Director of Programming Isabel Fontevila reveals that the Roxie curated more than 500 unique films last year.
"We want to give people a chance to see something that they are not going to see anywhere else", Fontevila adds, "classic films, cult classic films, films from under represented filmmakers".
Although the Roxie is equipped with all the contemporary, modern digital technology, the theater stays rooted in the past. Their projection booth is also equipped with projectors from the 1940s.
"We also really value the art of celluloid projection", Sloan explains, "Part of our mission is to continue to show film in the way that movies were meant to be seen".
According to Sloan, movies at the Roxie do not end with the credits. The theater hosts many events that give audiences an opportunity to interact with filmmakers and educators.
"Last year over a quarter of the films that we showed had a Q and A with a filmmaker or an artist". Fontevila shares.
"It’s much more than just movies, it’s a place where memories are created", Sloan says.
